The thing that would make both Jump Rope and Volleyball so much more enjoyable to try to push for: When you get to 50, let you start from 50. Or at least 40 or something. The early stages where it's slow are just such a chore when the bit that tests you doesn't start until you're in the second half.

Edit: Thinking about it, even just letting you start from the beginning but retain the speed from 50 would at least speed up those early stages.

The thing that would make the jump rope challenge better is it were 50 for the second moon or maybe 60 (twice the first moon).

Mastering the Cap jump is satisfying. In the beginning I would fumble with the controls but now I can do it without thinking.

Agreed. The double dive (jump, throw cappy, dive and bounce off cappy, throw cappy again, dive) is essential to master for horizontal distance (and should be coupled with a long jump or roll into a long jump for the most extreme distances you can go). The thing I'm currently trying to master is the diving in a different direction from where you throw cappy - I can do it but not as consistent as I would like, its counterintuitive because your instinct is to dive towards cappy.

You also need to master something for extreme vertical distance. As far as a I can tell its a vertical variation of the double dive, if you are close to a wall the best is: ground pound jump, throw and hold cappy spinning, groundpound jump onto cappy and a wall kick, throw cappy again and dive. The groundpounds like long jumps are optional and just help you add to max distance.

Stuff used to seem impossible, but after awhile you commit it to muscle memory.

i don't know if anyone else knows this, but one of the Crazy Cap jingles sounds an awful lot like the main stage music from Mario Picross. Confirm/deny?

The meta here is so beautiful, it makes me teary eyed every time.

The song is about Nintendo, Mario, gamers, and Nintendo fans. It's just beautiful. What a great love letter to the character who made Nintendo soar.

I'm tempted to make a thread just for this song...

Ps. One of the later OTs for Odyssey needs to be "We're the ones who made it this far!".

Are there parts of levels gated behind completing the story objectives(ie defeat the bosses)?

I've found a painting with no paint and hat doors in places I distinctly remember there not being a door there a couple times.

Then there was the door behind a rock in the water level and the mermaid was like "oh poo this rock is in the way of the door". Then later it was gone but there wasn't a thing I did like hitting a switch or something place that made it clear the thing I did had that specific impact on the world.

Fuck that jumprope minigame gah.

There's apparently another minugame I need to do to? :|
Just glitch it - it's not *that* hard to do, but arguably *more* satisfying to pull off than doing it 'legitmately'.

Yep, I had exactly the same thought!
The Koopa races are some of my favourite things in the game.

Any excuse to use the platforming tools in this game and to string together some sweet moves is greatly appreciated.
Loved them, even if I did look for guidance on the routes/techniques to use for a few of them.

Bowser's Castle, mopping up the final moons in the levels after that and a ton of shopping to go, and I'm done.

Might skip out on the shopping phase, we'll see how far I am from what I need when I get there. I'm on about 7k coins now, and I've already bought the one big 10k item; a brief bit of estimation and napkin mathematics suggests you need a little over 30k overall to buy absolutely everything?

Yes. There's a couple of events in each level that reformat the world a bit, and in some cases the cause-and-effect chain isn't particularly clear.

I've settled on
Luigi costume + mechanic hat
as my outfit of choice. It reminds me of
fire flower Luigi from the first Super Mario Bros. And I like having that Famicom logo on the hat—it shows Nintendo exists within Mario's universe which is weird and fitting in this strange game.

It makes the
World 1-1 theater show
more appropriate, in a way.

I like a lot of the content that opens up post-game. I was not enamored toward the story path. I'm conflicted on my feelings toward Odyssey. On the one hand, it has some of the highest highs I've had with the series. On the other, some of the lowest lows. It is more consistently good once the story is complete. And I mean, some of this is really good. But I was bored pretty often like the first half of my total play time. I have a better understanding of the high praise now that I am nearly complete. But I get the impression many fans had more beginning-to-end joyfulness than I did.

Now that I have a strong grip on the controls, i think it's safe to say this is the best movement in probably any 3D platformer ever. It's crazy good. There are still times when Mario is a little too sticky and slides against a wall I don't want him to, or when he leaps in a strange direction when I'm trying to complete a hat jump, sometimes the camera still grates on my nerves, but the majority of the time it's a dream. It all feels more skillful than anything out of any previous Mario game.

The 2D platforming in
Mushroom Kingdom
is absolute crap. This game has been excellent but that part kept me stuck for an hour. It is bad game design.

There's a section where your controls change radically. And it happens near 80% into the already tough platform portion. So you die a lot to get to the control changing point. And then of course I die at that point often to try to figure out the controls.
Garbage game design. Surprised Nintendo allowed for that. It felt cheap.

So I just "beat" the game yesterday, I knew there was going to be more content after the ending just like past titles, I have no idea how much the game will offer for its postgame but I am surely looking forward to it after the level they reintroduced after the credits (NOSTALGIA!!)

I gotta say the one thing this game is lacking compared to its predecessors is the soundtrack, it is not bad by any means but nothing stands out outside of Jump Up Superstar. Galaxy 1, Galaxy 2, 3D World/Land all had recognizable themes that make the games stand out give them that epic feeling. Hopefully there is more to the soundtrack than what the 1st half had to offer.

Having said all that I am enjoying the game quite a bit, but I cannot deny I still prefer the Galaxy template instead of the more open world-ish gameplay Mario 64, Sunshine and now Odyssey offer, but it a nice change of phase and very welcome, since it has been years since Sunshine came out.

Yeah.

I played through the game by quickly completing each kingdom with minimal exploration.

Once you "beat" each level, it unlocks a whole lot more stuff for that level.

Once you "beat" the game, it unlocks even more stuff for every single level.

I'm starting my second passes through all of the worlds, which this time is guide-assisted so it should be the final pass. Already cleaned out Cloud Kingdom and Ruined Kingdom, and now i've gotten the Mushroom Kingdom (barring a few stars that are event-triggered by completion of other stages, along with some of the Toadette stars) and the Cap Kingdom. Next is a second pass of the Moon kingdom where i'm missing 14 moons. I'm up to 620 moons right now, so "only" 260 to go.

One good tip that i missed: those moons you can buy at the stores? The first one you buy in each world counts as one of the 880 quest moons, even though you can buy more to get you to 999. So as you go through, be sure to buy one.

I'd have to agree with you there. It's the spherical sections that circle within different gravity zones in the 2D area right? It was very counter intuitive and my only real design flaw experience in an otherwise incredible game.

If only the motion controls could be mapped to buttons. Hopefully in an incoming update.

That was rough for me too.

I eventually figured out that you had to "map" your orientation on a "planet" to your analog stick, meaning you had to rotate your analog stick around the edges as you moved. This felt like an unintended solution despite being logical because movement still felt jagged and broken doing it this way.

I agree that it feels weird, but the controls don't change at all. They're always relative to the camera, not to the character or the environment. And be glad it is that way, otherwise the upside-down sections should control differently as well.

I loved that 2D section. I wasn't sure what Ajx was talking about when he first brought it up. I don't remember the controls changing. I was hoping to see more
spherical 2D segments
later on.

I'm onto the last handful of moons.

There's 2 in a post-game remix level where you don't have a scooter. Very tough.

Then there's both of the 100 challenges. Frustrating.

2 more hint arts. One which I know where it is and what is referring to, but I haven't figured out how to activate the moon. And the other I don't know where it is.

Other than that I have a few purple coins left from one kingdom and I was looking at the capture list and was surprised to find 2 things I haven't captured yet.

I eventually completed it it last night Red Irminsul MoonlitBow EraErr0r1 . But it still sucked. I guess there's no better way to map the controls for it BUT they should have first given me the chance to get used to it in a safe fashion. Instead, I was stuck dying over and over trying to figure it out. Super annoying and cheap.

Just 100%'ed.

Man, what a fantastic journey that was. Definitely my favourite 3D Mario game and probably the second best game I played this year (first is BOTW - kind of impossible to beat that one).

I was very underwhelmed initially, especially prior to starting the post end game content. I was even considering putting it aside, as in my eyes it was more or less a game that deserved a 7/10. Post game though skyrocketed my experience. The game totally builds up as you play and you get connected with characters, situations, the soundtrack, and the worlds. Also, once you get hold of Mario's moveset and become competent at combining the different was of navigating the environment, the fun and satisfaction you get by exploring the kingdoms changes completely. Initially, I used followed the predefined routes for reaching a particular point in the map, however when I was fully accustomed with the moveset I could find shortcuts and intuitive ways of reaching my destination. The stellar koopa races helped in that too.

I also enjoyed the climax of the journey. I left the very last challenge till I acquired all the moons, so I was totally immersed in what Nintendo tried to do with it.

Excellent game, looking forward to any additional content they release.

I didn't have the same trouble there and didn't realize it had no room for error. If there is no safe space to fail then you're right, it's strange that variation would be introduced without a way to experiment before the challenge.

What was cool was the beginning of the stage and how the game introduced us to the black background. That's good design.

End of game question

I finished the game 100% including the evil Darker Side of the Moon, but only have a total of 880 moons and the Odyssey balloon turned gold. I've seen screen shots of the final moon count up to 999, do I need to buy the extra moons from the kingdom vendors or wishful thinking there is more to do in the game?

Holy crap though. I thought I was doing well collecting moons. Nope. Loads to get on the levels I've been on. Don't mind I like the exploration.

Basically, I don't want minigames in my platformers. Just my preference. It's the sole reason I gave up on Banjo-Tooie. I just want to explore and collect things, even if it means tough platforming challenges similar to the end-game stuff in Galaxy 2 and even 3D World. However, I don't play these games for the racing, or jump rope, or try to recreate a picture based on memorization. I find a lot of the minigames in platformers to be tedious cases of trial and error. I guess that's the reason I constantly revisit Mario 64. There are races, but they're extremely easy and most of the game is pure platforming. But despite my gripes with the minigames, I'm still having a blast with Odyssey.

The racing is one of the best pure platforming parts of the game. It gives you a competitive framework in which you need to creatively think about the best moves to use and shortcuts to exploit. I wouldn't mind a whole spinoff game based on Koopa racing.

I did the sand kingdom looking one yesterday. If that's the one that has co-ordinates on it then here's a hint. Look at the map of each kingdom and go to the one that has the same colour co-ordinates.

The other one with phases of the moon is one that I'm currently stuck on as well.

Bowser's Kingdom vine into the sky. The seed is close to the pot so you can quickly do it over and over and you get all the coins (180) each run if you don't touch the analogue stick.

Glad I'm not the only person that had issues with that bit today! Took several tries to wrap my head round how the controls worked. I'd have rather they had the "safe" circle first so you could acclimate yourself to the controls rather than thrusting you instantly into the harder ones, as if your not clear on how it all works you'll be dead within a second. Its a pity as I loved the rest of the 2D area here, but this bit just hurt my enjoyment a bit :(

From the very first instance in the game where you take control of a Bullet Bill, you should realize that almost all of the controls in the game are relative to the camera, not to Mario.

The 2D sections are consistent with that.

100%d the game yesterday, every power moon and purple coin. Great game!!
I particularly love the continuation of what I call the "THANK YOU" pipe on darker side continued from 3d world, gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside. Not quite as much as in 3d world because Champions Road is the hardest level of any game I have ever played, but its still nice.

The Bullet Bill stuff is simple to understand and do. Plus it's of little consequence if you fail. This sequence I have a problem with is trash game design. It's 90% through the already tough platforming that even requires us to wait for the background to progress.

I think this advice is overlooking the biggest problem navigating gravitational orbits in the 2D section on Mushroom Kingdom, is that Mario can be orientated in a way where attempting to move left and right will accidentally get him stuck in a crouch state if you are just imprecise enough with your analog input, where the wall behind him can easily catch up and knock him out. You also can't rotate the camera to orient Mario in a way that makes direct left and right inputs work intutitively like you can in prior orbital 2D sections.

It's why the method of pulling to the outer rim of the analog stick matching where Mario is on the circle works because you can avoid accidentally getting stuck on a crouching input.

So after about 30 hours, I feel comfortable in calling this my GOTY. It's better than Zelda, Persona, Yakuza 0, and Horizon. I haven't played Wolfenstein 2 or Lost Legacy yet but I doubt anything is going to surpass Odyssey at this point.

If we get an Odyssey 2 that improves on its predecessor the way Galaxy 2 did, it'll probably be the best game ever made.

I wasn't sure how I felt about this when I cleared the story but there's a lot more fun in the post game. The new levels in the silver chimneys are all pure platforming each with a unique hook where the difficulty of the stage progresses in a meaningful way. This is what I'm looking forward to with new Mario games.

The best bits of BotW and Odyessey were mostly all the most linear ones. I hope that's something Nintendo takes to heart in the follow ups to each.
