Really hoping they get the chance to complete it in some other form of media (comics seems like a safe/easy bet)

Would be such a shame if it's so close to the end and to never have that story get the ending it deserves.

Yeah this is even making me reconsider buying Life is Strange 2 to be honest. Might just have to bite the bullet and buy one episode a time, but even then the threat of there being no conclusion makes me apprehensive about starting the journey even.
I wouldn't worry about that. Square is a big company.

Dontnod has been expanding just like Telltale did but they're getting publisher backing for all their projects so they aren't taking on risk themselves, and publishers can afford to see these things through. It's a different situation.

I think years ago, the episodic nature of these games were cool, but ultimately I don't think they work that well from a financial perspective. Many people will just wait until the full game is complete, read the reviews, and then buy if it's good, or they'll buy an episode or two, and stop there. It makes it too difficult to forecast what your sales numbers will be. I think it hurt Hitman also. Better to just release the full package at once for one price. That way if people don't finish it, it really doesn't matter because you made your money.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this. How did they go under?
I don't recall a flop from them.

Apparently, they did a very good job of putting out games and hiding the struggles. Someone was saying that the ONLY two games they ever put out that turned any sort of profit was the Walking Dead Season 1 and the Minecraft one. All others - Wolf Among Us, Tales from Borderlands, Guardians of the Galaxy, Batman, etc. - underperformed compared to their investment.

Which is insane to think about.

Bah, the first one that I decided to buy upfront before it's done, too.

Wonder how easy it'll be to get a refund.

I am no legal expert, but they can only get away without refunding if they actually go bankrupt right ? And so far they have not declared.

I think the part that pisses me off more than not finishing the story is the fact that we paid for a season and only get two episodes.

It's even worse if refunds are not issued. This is the final season of a series that people have been following for 6 years and now won't even get to know the ending of it. I hope at least there's a comic or something in the future to finish the story.

Well this really sucks, I liked the Walking Dead games and felt that the most recent episode was pretty good.

If true then there really needs to be some kind of refund in place. I did think it was really odd (and too generous) that they gave away all of the old Walking Dead games with a preorder for The Final Season, but now it looks like it was a last ditch effort to get some revenue.

I am seeing conflicting reports all over the place. I'd rather wait on an official statement on their portfolio before jumping the gun. Not that I expect anything other than a rewording of what we've been hearing.

At least on PC Before the Storm only sold at best half of what the original LiS did. But prequel by a different dev and all that

Is that lifetime or just at this point in their respective lifetimes? A shorter prequel by a different dev without the hook of the original game selling 1/2 as much doesn't seem too bad all things considered.

I wonder what the sales difference is between Arkham City and Arkham Origins (just because it's the first 'sorta' similar thing I can think of).

Yeah, it is not bad at all for what the game is. LiS2 will be the real test if people are hooked to the IP or just Chloe and Max.

Well, I feel bad for the employees. I decided to boycott Telltale after season 2 of the Walking Dead until they fixed their engine and stopped making every game's choices feel inconsequential. It seems like upper management doubled down on the terrible engine and also stiffled creative development, while also making everything a permanent crunch to try to maximize output.

I wonder how many people there are like me. I really liked season 1 and 2 of the Walking Dead. I briefly contemplated buying more series. I had even picked up Back to the Future between the Walking Dead games. Hate to see 200 plus people get screwed because of the decisions of maybe 20 people.

This sucks so much. Episode 1 of this final season was very good. Episode 2 will be hard to play through knowing its most likely the last one.

What are the chances a comic mini-series could be done by Skybound to conclude Clem's story? I'm guessing they own the rights to the game's characters and such?

Really hope people understand and stop badgering the devs (who just lost their jobs) about what the game "would have been" or such, they don't know, they finished ep 2 and that's it as far as any of them know.

What Telltale will do or won't do after this the developers who were let go have no information on.

At this point I don't care if I don't get my money back. To be honest, I only care about having a proper resolution for the story. Is there any chance they produce a short video, or even maybe an article, detailing how the story would have unfolded?

I don't need all the small variables, just the bigger picture.

Quite disappointing that the staff couldn't even finish the series that put them on the map because of potentially poor management.

Man, I am still blown away these guys went bankrupt! Just seems so unbelievable to me. They've been around for ages, and have had some very good games and helped pioneer a distinct style of game.

This is so insane.

Hard to imagine that none of the games were profitable, but I my worries that they were growing too fast were kinda true. But instead of making poor products, they just couldn't afford their process. Really sucks for the devs working there and putting in all that work. It's also crazy that their flagship series won't even get a conclusion.

Just curious, is it in any way possible at this point for any other publisher to salvage any of the in-progress projects from TT?

Who would "own" the work currently done on WD S4 at least now?

This situation feels ripe for a Kickstarter style revival to finish what was started. TT crew, throw something up there and see how funding goes, worry about legal and logistics later. If there is support to finish this series the community will show up; if you wait too long gettting the band back together will be much too difficult.

Yes pleaseee. I would Kickstart this in a heartbeat, probably pour in more $$ than I ever have to a Kickstarter beforehand too.

I don't want a Kirkman mini-series comic or a leaked script to bring us closure. I want the proper ending that this series deserves :( Based on some posts in the Walking Dead game's subreddit by the former season lead designer for TWD S4, they were really really excited for the ending, they started off with it and worked backwards from there. Also, Episode 2 ends on a cliffhanger so that's great lol. They said its among the best episodes in the entire series though.

Also, Episode 4's script was complete and Episode 3's development as a whole was far along. Please, someone, pick this up and fund it to its completion.

Listening to this right now... :'(

Not sure how it works in the states, but bankruptcy usually means asset auctioning. I don't know the specifics of the licensing arrangement they had with skybound but isn't there a possibility that this could get picked up by another publisher along the line?

Incredibly sad. We had a lot of fun working with them for Guardians, Minecraft and TWD.

Hopefully Skybound will hire former Telltale folks and do something with them to finish the story. Ideally the rest of the season would be finished, but I don't think there's any real chance of that happening now. Maybe they could do a comic, interactive animation, or something else.

Whoah. I thought they were making absolute bank with all their games being based on popular IPs, and running on that old engine of theirs (unless they updated it?). Sucks for those laid off, hope they'll find new jobs ASAP.
It was actually the opposite, more than anything:

1. Everything after TWD Season 1, with the exception of Minecraft, was a financial failure.
2. The insistence on continuing to use the Telltale Tool prevented the company from addressing the various technical shortcomings and bugs that their games were known for.

TWD1 was lightning in a bottle, and the higher-ups at Telltale learned all of the wrong lessons from it. Instead of keeping their focus to producing one season of a series and using funds from TWD's success to substantially improve or replace their engine, they ramped up staff to a degree that was impossible to maintain on their business model and started pumping out episodes for a variety of series like crazy. And this only got worse as people stopped buying their games, either because they weren't interested in the IPs offered, were tired of the ancient engine hampering the experience, or the general lack of critical acclaim their games received after TWD1 wrapped.

Telltale was apparently at a point where the only thing keeping the lights on was the money from their Netflix deal, which apparently collapsed.

Oh god, "The devs should finish it out of the goodness of their hearts because the fans deserve it!" Screw the hell off with that.
Like it's not thier fault! Y'a Wanna know why Minecraft is still happening? It's probably because Netflix threatened them with breach of contract or something.... it other words: finished it or we will destroy you further!

And probably because they already paid for it, meanwhile to finish TWD S4 they have to use money that no one is going to give them. So it makes all the sense in the world to use your skeleton crew to finish the game that not only you are obligated to make but also the one you have the money to do.

As I'm sure you all know, Walking Dead was a comic book first, so finishing he story as a comic seems possible. I would recommend tweeting Robert Kirkman with the suggestion. I just did myself. He hasn't tweeted since telltale went under.

Really a damn shame. Season 1 was one of the first titles that really showed me the potential of narrative games. I'll always love Lee's and Clementine's story.

I never played season 3, because I felt like S2 was pretty lackluster and by that point Telltale was knee-deep in copying their formula from one big franchise to another. But it seems like the new CEO tried to get the company back on track, it just wasn't enough. I definitely wanted to pick up A New Frontier now in time for the conclusion. Don't know what I'll do now.
