Wow. Really. How idiotic can a person be. Threatening to kill someone over a game. My God.

Kid should've just muted him like the rest of us do.

Nah... the more this kind of behavior gets recorded and reported with results ending on some form of charges the less it'll happen in the future. Maybe just maybe it'll force these manchilds to grow up or smarten up just alittle.

I'm not a snitch but I see it like this (since becoming a family man), if you're dumb enough to send me a message threatening to kill me or my own you're dumb enough to follow threw. I'll let the authorities decide your fate.

In my younger years I would've been dumb enough to try and find personal info on the guy.

Should game companies educate parents a little better on setting up a safer online environment for them? Maybe some better tools?

There needs to be restrictions that parents can easily implement and keep a lock on. Like friends only online communication and parental approval for friend requests.

Kids need to be protected from trash like this.

The real problem is that these things probably happen many times each day. This is just one incident where someone actually get caught. Too many people make threats and be racist/sexist online without consequence.

^This.

The culture of sending abusive or just plain rude messages to strangers when they have won/lost in a videogame is mindboggling really.

Shit, I hope the kid's okay. Must be rough getting hit with crap like that at that age.

The worst I got in online games as a kid was "die irl".

No there is a serious toxic element in the video game community and with gaming becoming more and more mainstream, these toxic elements need to be called out and exposed/charged.

Because just like back in the day when society thought only "nerds" and "lames" played video games, we dont need that to transition to psychos and weirdos.

This swatting, racist/homophobic threats, shooting others over losing, etc needs to be punished hard and heavy commensurate to the offense. Let them know we do not want them representing, let along be apart of our community

Is his legal team going to roll out the traditional defence of "It's just banter"?

It's a combination of insane competitiveness mixed with anonymity.

It sort of reminds me of those adult soccer leagues. Every damn game is the world cup for those people. Every loss is in the end of the world. And that's when everybody knows everybody else. Take that sort of competitiveness and add in anonymity and you've got these toxic online gamers.

It's mind boggling the way people act on the internet.

Years ago we'd be in an arcade surrounded by random strangers, and you didn't have this. You'd be standing next to the person and win or lose it was all cool. Someone else stepped in to play. No threats. No name calling. People treated each other well.

whomst among us has not, in a heated gaming moment, threatened to kill a child
A few years ago in Pennsylvania a man actually DID kill a baby who kept crying and interrupting his gaming session. Instead of pausing his game and looking after the baby he decide to hit it until it stopped crying.

This is America.

He looks 60.. I guess being a hardcore gamer takes a toll on the body.

It's also good news law enforcement was able to intervene.

I'm sure it happened but it was the exception, not the norm. Anecdotally I'd never seen a single instance of violence or name calling in all of the time I'd spent at arcades.

I couldnt even fire up a round of the Blops 4 beta without seeing racism and shit on the typed chat.

At least half of Era is like this dude. We don't know how many children have been threatened and how many have yet to receive protection. But they're out there.

Let's talk about how quickly the cops acted on this and how come other harrasment online is not dealt with as swiftly. Does it come down to the police department? The parents raising hell? How quickly can they get in touch with Microsoft to track this shit.

I really hope you are being facetious. Because here's a thought for you, the guy shouldn't have made death threats over a video game (hell, I can't even think of anything done over the internet that a death threat would be warranted or would help prevent anything).

I'm going to guess it's because of the age of the person threatened, coupled with the more specific nature of the threat.

I suspect partly due to the police department and partly due to it was an older guy targetting a kid. If you are an adult they'd probably tell you that they can't do anything about it or that it's just the internet and they probably aren't going to do anything.
