Played one and two on GBA when I was young. I think they are among the best RPG.

For real.

I actually made a video on FF2!

I think it's not a fantastic game, the series doesn't really reach greatness until the SNES. The NES games are dated and unenjoyable. But I actually thought 2 was a much more interesting game than the first one. The story actually is trying something. It has themes, characters die. Also the systems in 2 are a lot less broken than 1. You can actually heal your team and some spells actually work as intended!

Something about it I like. Maybe I'm just a hipster contrarian asshole. But FF1 isn't that good. Spell charges are bullshit and the inventory is terrible.

It's not really a good game, but it's not awful either.
I kinda liked it when I've played the dawn of souls.

It sure is the strangest Final Fantasy I ever beat.

I had a bad experience with a cave door not opening despite me checking how to progress with a guide. So I ran around level grinding myself into a higher level area. Some time later I found it was still no good, went back to the cave and the door opens. I ensue to steam roll the rest of the game. This and stat progression are the only things I remember about the game.

Lord knows i've tried. I've been trying since the 90's. I've tried so many times that i've lost count.

No other game puts me to sleep as fast and efficiently as Final Fantasy II.

I've beaten FFII 5 times. Love the game. It's the best of the NES trilogy, and certainly better than XIII, and XV. I'd maybe rank it with VIII at around my 10th favorite mainline title.
I kind of want to replay the NES version, because I cheesed my stats last time by attacking myself, and I was quite young. The later versions all have very smooth progression and I don't quite remember if the NES version was nearly as bad as people say.

Well maybe I will play it sometime, I didn't dislike my time with FF1 GBA and I am an adult with at least a modicum of impulse control.

So you need to equip a shield and get attacked for your evade/agility to go up, is that what you mean?

Yeah, but evasion is pretty worthless. Go straight to dual wielding with everyone. Your defense increases any time you survive a strong hit, and is more than enough to get you through all of the content, including super bosses, and the added damage is just crazy.

I did a full playthrough last year.

The only highlight is that everyone dies.

By the end of the game, almost all of the villages are ruined and completely empty.

It's great!

I would love another game that expands on Final Fantasy II's weirdo progression mechanics. It'd be a cool way to have dynamic playstyles.

FF2 is a pretty solid game IMO. It is unrefined and primitive due to the time period but compared to FF1, it is a massive improvement. It is basically the precursor to the SaGa series which is fantastic.

Still not the FF game that I say is horribly underrated. That is FF3, the NES version is amazing and no one seems to ever talk about it.

I played the DS version abd absolutely hated it. Its one of 2 FF games I never finished (the other is FF2)

I heard the original is better, but whats the best way to play it if I ever find time to go back to it?

Only way is via emulator with a fan translation or getting the cart and patching it with a retron (which is basically just a more legal emulator)...or just playing in Japanese.. Personally not a fan of the DS version myself either but LOVED the original version.

There was a comic made during the GAF days about FFXIII or XIII/2 getting a 39 on Famitsu and Wada berating Akitoshi Kawazu for his work in FFII. I was hoping this thread would contain it but alas, nothing, and now I cannot find it anymore!

There is a patch that removes capacity points from the game, enabling you to play around with different parties more freely early on, so pick up that as well.

On topic, none of those pros of FF 2 even together outweigh the biggest flaw: the battle system. I played through the GBA-version and it was much more manageable than NES/PS1-version. No desire to play that game ever again.

I never understood the hate. The growing system is interesting, the story is good, the game is hard enough not to fall asleep, the chars are insteresting and various... one of the best FF in my hopionion, and a great jrpg!

I remember playing through FFIII before the DS remake came out. I enjoyed both versions but the NES version has burned into my memories in the best way. Something about the floating island and the dark world below just scream Final Fantasy.

FFII is a fine game but I think your underestimating those games. FFII is not my favorite by any means but I thought it was nice evolution of the first game and I think I will replay it. I just don't agree it's better than XIII or XV by any metric.

Fun fact:

Final Fantasy II has a novelization in Japan that was written by Kenji Terada, the scenario writer of the game. It contains details that were not included in the game due to space constraints.

For example, in the novel, Satan is an actual character in the story, and when the protagonists fight the Emperor the second time, it's actually Satan taking the appearance of the defeated Emperor (the real Emperor doesn't return from Hell like in the game version). The Emperor wasn't originally a bad person but his royal line was cursed by Satan.

The novel also says that the first signs of Leon being a troubled person was when his fiancee left him and he stabbed his own dog in anger.

The novel also gives the Emperor a first name, "Mateus", which is why there's a Mateus summon in FFXII.

I like the game version of the emperor being evil, humanize the story and shows that leaders can be evil, by putting the Blame on the Devil, It loses the point that humans can be evil genocides, and the royal family is Just a victim of an alien great force, that they were always good and only due to the demon they went to the dark side..

And thats a great point of this game as a fina fantasy game that point only in ffvi returned with kafka, that its not an evil ancient entity that is the villain but a normal human being.

I mean, there's no estimating involved here. I got the platinum on all 3 XIII games and have over 300 hours in XV if you include Comrades. I've done everything there is to experience with XV, including Monster of the Deep and Pocket Edition.

FFII is, pound for pound, a more solidly designed game I think. The story and writing are certainly more cohesive. XIII and XV are a mess in that aspect. The exploration is much better than XIII's.
It's a simpler game, so obviously it's easier for it to avoid having huge flaws, but at the end of the day, I prefer the simple building that maybe has a few ugly parts, than the extravagant mega structure, that's missing key support beams.

I played FF I and II on GBA. Still should have the cartridge somewhere.
Never again. Some bosses take about an hour to beat.

Yeaaah... nope, probably my least favourite FF game. I didn't even remember why but I recall having a bad time, I only played through it because of the killer soundtrack.

If Final Fantasy II can be remade with FFVI mechanics I'll replay and finish it. I won't touch this game ever again after one playthrough.

I really enjoyed my time with it.

Mateus is a compelling villain and he gets more interesting with his tricky moveset found in the Dissidia games.

Ricard is great and the game has some really fun moments. Also, this is the game that introduced dark knights into FF! OG Leon is better than Squall.

Ultimately it's all opinions and we may never agree but i don't dislike 2 and like I said it's a fine game. I just could never choose it over ffxv.

2 and 3 are the only mainline Final Fantasy games I haven't played. Surely 2 can't be as bad as 5. I think I'll whip out my Vita or PSP and get a copy.

Having played and beaten it earlier this year, it's really solid and crazy influential on the series as a whole. The improvement from 1 is nuts.

My only real problem with it was leveling spells later in the game. Without grinding you have no chance of getting Flare/Holy/Ultima to higher levels.

Considering it's a spiritual precursor to the SaGa series...

I legit loved it. My favorite version was the PSone port because it at least felt like it was balanced enough.

I'd probably enjoy it more than any current JRPG, so there's that (I remember briefly playing this on my GBA).

I liked it and played straight through it on the PS1 version. Not the best, but definitely better than IV. But all the FFs are better than IV really.

4- Do you think Final Fantasy games are easy? This game was made for you, i havent played the NES/GBA version, the NES is the hardest one, the psp version is fine for most of the game until the end of the game and the sequel, and boy that was fun, monsters with insta kill if i had bad luck. And if you play without a guide this game is full of fake rooms with strong monsters, and some dungeons are a maze.

All of this sounds like the worst. Hard pass lol.
