I won't buy this game if it has Steve. It would be the point where I would stop caring at all. This means nothing to the game's sales or anything like that, I just personally would lose my interest as the series would stop being what I used to enjoy.
I don't do avatar bets, this is the only time I'm doing it because BGBW wasn't specific enough!
I also think Akuma is more likely only because of the villains themeing but I can see either for sure.
Considering your history with third parties I can see why you'd be miffed if he made it in. Especially with the closest thing we would have for an obscure Nintendo character is King K Rool.

Hey guys, I'm a bit lost right now, what are the news? I see a lot of talk about Steve Minecraft and more characters but can't find if it's because of a new rumor or something.
Nintendo doesn't have any other all star titles -- this is what got me into it, the moment this game loses this completely it's the day I'm out. Japanese gaming legends at least make sense because this industry already panders non-stop to western companies and their AAA characters, if Smash Bros starts doing this as well, meh.
Gaming is really becoming more and more boring to me as Japan's and Nintendo's relevance and influence fade away.

Vergeben seems to be corroborating other rumors that are suggesting Minecraft would get a playable character and another leaker says that if the Square Enix character were to be leaked people would be fired.
Shinji Hashimoto also replied to a tweet from a fan that was supporting Sora in Smash and only tweeted "Yes" and then he ended up deleting that Tweet so between how under wraps the Square character is and Hashimoto deleting that tweet it could suggest the Square character being Sora.

None of the succeeding Smash games were as comically wacky as the first one. That one was on another level with its wackiness, and cartoonish comical violence. Wish the series remained more like 64 in style and tone.

Is that really a hot take here? Most people on this thread so far seem to be positive for Sora. Even the few that aren't don't seem to be supportive of Geno anyway. Plus alot of Smash fans elsewhere seem to be supportive for Sora too.

Here is an interview which specifically expresses that they were glad Smash could support other games and prove Japanese games could resonate with the rest of the world.
Also, at the very least, Nintendo's in probably the best position it has been since like, 2009? A new Pokemon, Animal Crossing, and more is coming out next year, so I think they'll exert more influence in the coming years. Plus Atlus has Persona to show that turn-based RPGs can be successful now, and Nier Automata did fantastically for Square, and was actually only made because they were tired of making Dragon Quest all the time - so maybe now niche Japanese games can rise back to prominence.
We're a long way off from the dark ages of the Wii/360/PS3 era.
