Risk of Rain is a fairly easy purchase at $10 US, enjoyed the fifteen minutes or so I played already. Had to swap the A and B buttons though, it felt really off jumping with A.
The atmosphere in that game is so great, the sound design is really nice and the level up sound effect in particular is incredible.... really elicits some sort of weird emotional or nostalgic response for me, idk why really

I live and breathe roguelikes/lites but I wasn't impressed with RoR on Vita due to needing a magnifying glass. It was a decent game mechanically but I don't think that the sense of scale with gigantic enemies was worth making most everything ant-sized. Maybe it'll look a lot better on Switch though, I dunno.

Wait...how did I not know this was coming to Switch? I love Roguelikes and always hear great things....might have to get this, especially at this price.

At first I thought it was too small but didnt take long to appreciate how you get so much more spatial awareness, which is one of my biggest issues with 2D games (eg I dont like hollow knight)

also you have to do things like crowd control while dealing with cooldown timers and again you really need that extra spatial awareness

so I think the move works wonderfully because the game mechanics actually use the advantage

Hover looks extremely cool but the reviews aren't exactly encouraging. I hope that the upcoming Razed will scratch a similar itch:

I tried to play Gradius with the joy-con yesterday and it was pure hell. Diagonals are a nightmare. I need a new controller that's precise enough for 2D games. I'm considering grabbing the Pokken controller too, so if any of you guys have something to say about it, I would greatly appreciate it!

And no, I don't really care about rumble, motion controls and wireless. I'm mostly concerned about the ergonomics and the d-pad accuracy for 2D games.

Go ahead and grab yourself a Magic NS Adapter and get those PS4/XBO controllers rockin. DS4 is very comfortable for Switch games. Loving mine.

Okay, So I got my hands on Immortal Redneck and Capcom Beat Em Up Bundle

Immortal Redneck
is a pretty good time. Taking notes from Doom and Serious Sam, you have to go through and clear rooms in a Pyramid trying to work your way up to the top. The shooting is fast and fluid. Lots of great enemy variety and the game has a consistent difficulty that ramps as you climb the floors. When you die, you are able to invest in your upgrade tree to get better stats to finish runs. Its a pretty good game, gets my recommendation and gets to stand on its own next to titles like DOOM on Switch. If you are looking for a lil cute FPS, its right here. Its got the feel of a PC game oddly enough being built on Unity. Handheld is a lil blurry but docked is clean as whistle!

With Capcom Beat Em Up Bundle, what is there to really say? 4P Beat Em Ups on the most multiplayer friendly system to ever exist. Armored Warriors is a gem of a game and Ive only played that and King of Dragons atm. Every Switch owner should have this in their collection seeing as its #2 on eShop download charts. Buy it already!!!!!

With the 20$ for NSO and 47 for DBZ later this month, Ive hit one hell of a splurge on Switch. Thats almost 100 dollars in 2 weeks.... jeez.... And Hand of Fate 2 is on sale and Ive had that on my list as well. Im trying to fight the urge seriously.

Anyone else thing Hand of Fate 2 will have a better price later? (currently 23.99 from 29.99, 20% off)

So Sega Ages titles are $8, only $2 more than the 3D Classics. I'm fine with that, considering it's meant to be the "console" version of some of these titles. Though if anything, this means they'll be like $4 or $5 eventually down the road considering how many times the 3D Classics have gone on sale.

I love Risk of Rain! I hope this runs a bit better than the Vita version though. I found that the game was likely to crash the more powers were activated and that meant that long runs could end with a crash and all progress lost. Very frustrating for trying to unlock all the artifacts.

I'm playing through Bastion at the moment. I have heard about the game before, but didn't know more than it was supposed to be a very good game. The game really is an excellent ARPG. Such nice pacing and a well polished game. And it's a really nice-looking game as well. Highly recommended if you haven't played it before.

Wherever
Thanks for hyping me up for a game that isn't even out yet in Europe apparently. Damn you. ^^

Speed Brawl is internationally awesome! It can be a pain but there is always the option to download the US eShop version :/

Has anyone tried out Hover yet on Switch? I don't know whether to buy on PS4 or Switch, just worried about potential performance issues on Switch.

Not 100% smooth but I am enjoying learning how to move about the first district of the city. Controls slightly easier than JSR for me. Strangely has gyro controls enabled by default for scanning which works just fine, also can enable gyro for camera but I am leaving that off for now while I master the controls.

NWR review of Hover is well...the port not only seem unpolished, but the game feels very rough, I had too high expectations I must admit.

Anyone got THE SWINDLE? I'm super thrilled by the game but if the port doesn't stand I'm not biting.

Can't disagree that the game feels a little unpolished/rough but I have been desperate for more JSR for years and it scratches that itch a bit. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for performance patches.

The Swindle is already out?? I did not know that. Will double check availability. Too many games, lol.
Edit: just saw that it's not out yet. I almost panicked! Still too many games :D

The game is ropey as fuuuuuck, but I'm having a lot of fun with it. My biggest issue is that the characters lack weight.

I had no idea that the city was an online hub. I got through the tutorial and was met with like 50 people already running around the city.

I feel the same! But turned off online for my world though until I feel ready to meet the pros, haha. Regardless, I played JSR into infinity just to replay levels and practice tricks so that is my #1 desire for this game to match. Totally possible :)

I don't really think there is a natural progression. They're all similar games with small differences in structure. King of Dragons/Knights of the Round have a bit of RPG element to them with weapon upgrades. Battle Circuit (which is amazing and I'm so glad I finally get to play) has a totally different level-based setup with some short levels, some long levels, some walking, some shooting, etc. Captain Commando is more like Final Fight. They're all good. Pick one you like and go with it.

Have been watching some reviews on the Pokken controller and people seem to like it, nice d-pad. I also don't care about rumble etc missing as I usually turn it off these days lol, but have to admit I wear the shit out of my screenshot button taking pictures so not having that is a bummer! :P (also the no home button thing might get annoying sometimes too).

2 of the shoulder buttons are just plonked on the front as sorta afterthoughts too so might not be very good for certain games, but for basic retro stuff I think it could be good!

My major advice if you're looking for a good DPAD is, don't buy the Pro Controller. While it has amazing sticks and it's very confortable, it has one of the worst DPADs in a modern controller. With games including simple directional inputs, you will not have problems. But it's very easy to register up and down directions when you swap between the right and the left directions. This will make games such as 'Puyo Puyo Tetris' or fighting games unplayable.

I was one of those saying "it's not as bad", until I tried to play 'Puyo Puyo Tetris'. And I confirmed that all the terror stories regarding this controller, were truth.

Also, it seems that the 8bitdo controllers have the exact same problem with the DPAD, as has been cited multiple times by Dash Kappei , and he really knows the "retro" stuff. So I will rely in his opinion to stay far away from these DPADs.

I have read a lot of good stories about the Hori DPAD included in the right Joycon, I'm waiting for an European release to bite the bullet.

The negative thing of this DPAD is that you can only play in portable mode.

The thing that I still want is a DPAD as good as the Hori Joycon one, but in a bluetooth controller, and officially licensed by Nintendo, so I will not see the controller support broken every time that Nintendo decides to release an OS update, waiting for a new firmware.

Thanks for your comments, guys!

And I didn't know about the Magic NS Adapter... I own a Wii U Pro Controller and really like it, so I guess I'll buy the adapter instead of a new controller.

Velocity 2X is out today. Was brilliant on PS4 and Vita, needs to sell on Switch for the sequel to be funded.

Not the best week to achieve it. So many good games, Velocity 2X included.

Undertale
Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle
Speed Brawl
The Gardens Between
Light Fingers
Reigns: Kings & Queens
Risk of Rain
Sega Ages
Nintendo Switch Online: Nesflix

Probably one of the best eShops week.

And prepare your wallet or run because October, November or December can be absolutely destroyer.

Yes! I scream about this adapter from the heavens. Its truly a godsend. Your Pro Controller will thank you!

Plus its fun when I have friends and they geek about how I got a PS4 controller working (I hide the adapter behind the dock)

I always tell them I did blood magic and lost 3 years off my life, but hey! working DS4 controller lol!

I'm thinking of picking up Capcom Beat 'Em Up. As a relative newbie to the genre and having only played Final Fight, what would be the recommended progression through the collection to maximize my enjoyment?

All of them are great, honestly pick one and go for it. Choose another if you aren't into it but all the games have different gameplay designs and mechanics.

Everyone is screaming about Battle Circuit, will try that today. but I LOVED Armoured Warriors. So many different types of combos and you can pick up Arm and Leg parts off the enemies to become a total badass. I like the frog type mech with the a Laser Sword. Soooo badass!

Buy it!!!

A new twin stick shooter will be released this Friday in the US, 'Debris Infinity', priced at $4.99.

While it's made in Spain, the game has the distinctive flavor of British developed arcade games in the Xbox Live Arcade era.

Hopefully, it will see a release in Europe soon. I really need a pure good-old neon infused twin stick shooter in Switch.

Yeah, the reviews in Steam are very good, the game is promoted as running at 60 FPS in Switch, and the scoring system seems super interesting, with a lot of compelling modes.

It looks much better, from a pure arcade design, that the only other twin stick shooter available in Switch, 'Tachyon Project'.

Day one purchase for me. And the developer seems like a very passionate guy, with a great knowledge of an arcade British tradition. He did an amazing work promoting the game through different events and festivals in Spain.

Damn, portable 'Risk of Rain' with a big screen, contrary to the Vita version in which the characters were too small. This is game changer.

I will pick up a Sega Ages release, still deciding between 'Thunder Force IV' and 'Sonic the Hedgehog'.

In one hand, 'Sonic the Hedgehog' is my second favorite classic platformer, just after the first 'Super Mario Bros'. Not only it's my favorite entry in the series, because it's much more based in tight platforming sections and less in creating "eye-popping" designs trying to impress you with the crazy ways in which Sonic can defy the gravity. I will say that is the only entry in the series that I like. And I even see this, due to the color palette, as a game set in the same "Fantasy" universe of 'Space Harrier'.

In the other hand, I'm not an enthusiast of 'Thunder Force IV'. Not a bad game, but not as perfect designed as 'Thunder Force III' that in my opinion, is the best shmup ever created for a domestic console, so good that it was ported to the arcades. But I like to support shump releases with my money, to send the correct messages to the companies: port every shmup ever released to Switch, even the bad ones.

And like Jim_Cacher I'm also absorbed into the NES vortex.

NES was my favorite classic console. And since the release of Switch in March with the unforgettable 'Breath of the Wild', the magic of 'The Binding of Isaac Afterbirth+' in portable form and the great surprise of 'VOEZ', not to talk of how much fun was 'Snipperclips' played with friends... I haven't enjoyed so much of my Switch like in this last week.

All these NES games in portable form and with a CRT shader are a dream. And I'm really enjoying of 'Ice Climber' for the first time, after negating the game for a lot of years. Once you understand the things that the game is trying to do, it's like the first "jump" into the 'Super Mario Bros' territory. A game based in dominating tricky physics in the jump. With the same ambitious structure, with 32 mountains designed with a vertical scroll, in the same way as 'Super Mario Bros' had 32 horizontal levels.

The thing is that 'Ice Climber' is a game based in the same design concepts that 'Snake Pass'. It's all about dying in tricky obstacles and failing while you try to figure the tricks to ascend. Do you see these walls? You will need to learn the angle of your bounce when you jump into the wall, to reach the platforms.

Like 'Snake Pass', the first hours are based in the "frustration" of mastering and dominating each jump. Until you reach a point in which you will nail every jump, and you will know the exact second in which you need to push the button to reach the platform.

A pretty fascinating title, specially seeing how its director was in charge of programming 'Super Mario Bros'. A lot of the ambitious concepts of 'Super Mario Bros', like a complex structure based in levels to sculpt a complete universe inside a video game, with the same perfect difficulty curve, are present in 'Ice Climber'. With the difference that 'Super Mario Bros' was to 'Ice Climber' the same thing that 'Super Mario Odyssey' is to 'Snake Pass': the opposite to an easy-to-pick game.
Fantastic write-up. I need to play Ice Climber as soon as possible.

So many games to play this week. Bought the Beat'em Up Bundle which is great and having a lot of fun playing some of the NES games. Especially ice hockey online. The Gardens Between looks great too.

I'm interested in Risk of Rain but I usually don't seem to like rogue likes. I can't put my finger on why this one interests me though. So what carries over after dying in this game?

I'm thinking of picking up Undertale. Looks really interesting and has been getting incredible reviews over the years. The Japanese also seem to love it.

The Gardens Between looks really nice. Is it a good game? Reminds me of Captain Toad slightly.

Risk of Rain is lots of fun! Never played before but had a blast with my son pew-pewing enemies for a couple of hours. We never beat a boss or unlocked anything but it's super addictive with that one-more-run draw. It definitely keeps things interesting with the randomized items and drones you can find to power up your characters. I started wondering if there were different weapons to find but it seems like it was an intentional design decision to stick with abilities and things to augment your character and keep things moving rather than turn it into a weapon-swapping loot game. Definitely fun for local co-op and felt like a solid value at $10. Not sure how single-player will be as I read that it may be quite difficult without others to help you - will have to give that a try later.

Thanks mate, to be fair the worst offence in the 8bitdo controllers it's the buttons.
It's missing the proper "pads" (hehe) that go below a button and that gives them less finger-rebound power and a the button's run is much longer that it should. It's evident by trying to make a rapid-jump sequence with the most possible small jumps in 10 seconds after doing the same rapid-jumps using an official SFC/SNES controller! Yeah, it's too bad because they're sleek, and a great idea but the SFC30 was a waste of money.
But I also wanted to tell you that Hori DPAD joycon was supposed to release yesterday in EU but it's been postponed to October 14th, so your wish about a possible EU release has been granted!
I grabbed it on Amazon.es for just €20 shipped.
There are 3 or 4 versions so far: zelda black/gold; mario red; white.
Will give detailed impressions when it
