FF6 is widely (albeit not by everyone) considered to be the better game. But FF4's music is stellar.

Which overworld theme do you like better?

FF4

FF6

Personally, while I love the driving march beat and cool flute of FF6's overworld, I think I prefer the vast journey feeling of FF4's. And I feel like FF4's is good throughout the whole loop, while I think FF6's gets kinda weak at 1:17.

FF4's overworld theme perfectly captures the same feeling of a long journey that Rydia's wind-swept hair captures:

well Terra's theme is arguably the best theme in the entire franchise, so

Final Fantasy VI Terra's theme by far

FF4 OST was weak for 1991. It got steamrolled by Super Castlevania IV and ActRaiser around the same time.

Of those two, I vote for Terra's theme. Big sucker for that flute, and I love the sort of marching beat to it. It contrasts really nicely.

The best overworld track is the World of Ruin, though. :p

Hearing both of those just brings back memories from when I played those as a kid. But as much as I love ff4s overworld theme I have to give it to 6 cause Terra's theme is amazing. FF9s might give it a run for its money tho

They're both wonderful but VI edges it. I'd kill for an overworld theme that was even a fraction as good as these in DQXI.

I'm torn... I love FF6, but I was never a fan of the overworld/Terra theme. FF4's overworld music is... okay. Honestly, there are far more interesting songs to compare between the two. Troia's theme versus Cele's theme for example.

If I had to choose from those 2 then I would pick FF VI, although there are games with much better overworld music from PS1/SNES gen.

Terra's theme is the superior song but I think it works better as an intro/character theme. It's kinda ruined by being constantly interrupted by battles

IV's is more suited for its actual purpose

Both of them I'd rank pretty low in terms of map themes from the series, though (VII is the best)

VI's main theme (and World of Ruin is no joke either for setting the mood of why it's such a shift) sets the bar for the franchise.

IV is pretty good, but VI's entire soundtrack is absurdly high grade.

Between those two, Terra. But personally, Searching for Friends.

I chose VI, because it is one of the best themes. But the IV overworld theme is still pretty iconic, and gives me feelings of games from that era as well.

Still, VI's tunes are special for me.

This is going to be such a one-sided poll that it's ridiculous.

I prefer FFIV's overworld theme but there's no way that it's going to win against FFVI of all things. At least do FFVI's overworld theme vs FFVII's. That would be a much more fair comparison.

IV's overworld theme felt like a grand adventure so going with that.

I prefer this one over the main theme for FFVI

IV and V have good music, but FFVI is in a great deal of ways the first time that the series came to understand itself as a modern product (Ito-driven sequences like the assorted party splitups/the Opera sequence, an emphasis on getting players to have favorite characters over perfect mechanical balance, a difficulty curve whose entire point is letting you feel really powerful in the endgame so you can just satisfyingly kick the shit out of Kefka, etc) and as a real showcase for production values and presentation over more traditional JRPG dungeon crawling.

The music being one of the stars of the game for the first time (and not just some really good set dressing) is a big part of that.

Looking for Friends > Terra's Theme > Overworld (FFIV)

Both candidates in the OP are amazing.

EDIT: I'm listening to Searching for Friends at work now and am 100% solidified on my above opinion.

Terra's theme is a fantastic character theme but IMO it doesn't work as well as an overworld theme.

Terra's theme is in a completely different league to be honest.

Searching for Friends is in that same league as well. It probably is the better song as opposed to Terra's Theme taken clinically, but I think i have to personally put Terra's Theme above it overall just due to the fact that it is associated in my mind with the much better (to me) first half of the game.
