Hopefully when and if Dixie shows up, they give her the kneepads back. The Rare pin is unfortunately not going to happen, but at least she can get the other part of her classic design back, like how K. Rool's golden belly returned.

I'm really curious what the roster would have been like with Rare still with Nintendo. Presumably Banjo would have been in Brawl, and maybe Joanna Dark in For. I wonder who they would have replaced?

I do sorta feel like if Nintendo reached out to Microsoft and said "hey, we wanna give you money for that character you're not using for our game" that Microsoft would say "sure" and work out a deal, but it's possible to Sakurai that Banjo isn't a big enough deal to reach out for.

Banjo-Kazooie is the dream that will never happen. If it does, I will change my avatar to something beautiful and magnificent.

If Rare was still with Nintendo I feel like BK and Joanna Dark would definitely be in, Conker, some kind of Viva Pinata character, and Grunty would be maybes.

Also since presumably the Rare characters would have continued to appear in DK games K Rool probably would have gotten in sooner and Dixie would already be in.

You say that, but they didn't get in Melee.

Granted the roster was more limited but still. Best they got was the PD proximity mine.

Joanna definitely would have made the roster considering her series had items in Melee. Banjo would have likely been in and maybe even had a second character, like Mumbo or Grunty.

Conker would never be in though. It's one thing to have M rated characters like Snake and Bayonetta alongside huge IPs like Pokemon. It's another to have an M rated character that pisses on his enemies. I'd imagine The Pokemon Company would throw a fit having Pikachu alongside Conker. It wouldn't fly.

Maybe a Killer Instinct character? Jago or Fulgore would have been cool.

Having items in the game sadly doesn't mean much....

Melee was also missing Diddy and Wario and we only barely got Ganondorf. I don't imagine we ever would have gotten Banjo in it.

Didn't they try for James Bond, though?

You bring up a good point. I'm only speaking of a hypothetical world where Nintendo bought Rare and had full ownership of their IP. I'd imagine if that had happened, then Perfect Dark and Banjo wouldn't be dead franchises.

For Melee? The Rare buy-out was definitely in that timeframe.

Indeed it was. Leigh Loveday had mentioned in Scribes that Rare made a ton of trophies for Melee that were cut due to the buyout.

I still stand by that this is why Diddy has no trophy in Melee. My theory is that it was based on Diddy Kong Racing.

Sakurai tried getting Banjo into Melee but ran into some Microsoft/licensing problems.

"Incidentally, including a character from Rare in Smash would be difficult for various reasons. I know there are some people who think that Banjo & Kazooie are an obvious inclusion, but that's unlikely for a variety of legal and financial reasons."
This doesnt' read like he tried to get Banjo into smash. He leads with Rare and uses Banjo as one example, probably since it's one requested in reader responses

see also
"Showing realistic guns = no good! Character uses an actor's likeness = no good! Since the original game is based on a movie, getting those rights = no good! He's Rare's property = no good! Blocked on all fronts."
He probably did not actually try to get James Bond into smash.

Having this theme open a nintendo direct/smash trailer would break the internet

If anything could outdo the reaction to Ridley and Isabelle, it'd be this.

It's worth noting, with Perfect Dark, that with Snake joining, the whole thing about Sakurai being apprehensive about PD stuff at all in Smash due to being M-rated would vanish. To think in an alternative universe we'd have Banjo AND Joanna in Smash. Just. Yes. Yes. YES.

I know it's been commented on earlier, but I hope this has a lot of cool itnerviews & concept art with Sakurai in the collector's edition. The real pull of guidebooks at this point are all the extraneous stuff

He uses Banjo because Banjo is first in line, I don't think he was spitballing.
I also imagine he still had to negotiate for the Proximity Mine, Cloaking Device and/or the Motion Sensor Bomb alongside Rare trophies, so I imagine this type of thing came up often in Melee's development even outside character selection.

I kind of wonder if Diddy's rights at the time were considered up in the air. For the Smash 64 "what if there was a smash 2" reader polls he put Diddy in the Rare category.

If Nintendo thought that Banjo was important enough to be in Melee, it's possible that they could of tried to retain the IP from Microsoft during the buyout.

I wonder if Nintendo just didn't have any interest in securing Banjo or just felt they wouldn't have done anything with it. Rare was the house that built Banjo, maybe they felt they had the best vision for him. It's not like Nintendo did a whole lot with Donkey Kong Country after Rare was bought.

Please no. Dixie's kneepads are just dated and tacked on, and fulfill no purpose whatsoever, unlike K. Rool's belly.

That's why we need an E-rated character who pisses on her enemies.

They may not have seen Banjo as necessary because they already had Mario to fill the 3D platformer role for their systems.
