I somehow missed music theory completely until box theory was already a thing. Maybe because I miss hundreds of pages of these threads at a time.

Anyway I don't really understand it but should I take the mask off my avatar now?

I'm not gonna btw.

In all seriousness, they're not going to announce another Smash character a week after the last one. Whatever it is, it's not Smash.

I mean it's obviously not smash news because we just had an announcement, but it could lead into smash news in the future, maybe.

Since we're only missing one update at this point, I figure I'll mention my last ~blog numbers observation~

The video thumbnails do have proper filenames. Just for example, Ganondorf is
Character_EN_23_Ganondorf_0604.jpg

As I was going through them I noticed a few different ones and finally realized the number at the end is probably a date. So Ganondorf there is 0604 or June 4th.
This doesn't really say anything...you can't be cute and change it to future characters or try to predict who is coming when or anything. Can't call up a photo that's not uploaded, you know? But I think it's interesting from a behind the scenes, putting a website together perspective!

The overwhelming majority of them are 0604. Seems like they made all the thumbnails for the videos (or finalized them or w/e) on June 4th. Or, almost all of them:

Ridley & Duck Hunt are (so far) the only ones who have a date of 0607. Inkling was also 6/4, incidentally.

Interestingly it looks like the American branch lost a bunch of them or had some bad encoding mishaps or something. Everything from Mario to at least Pichu (excluding Dark Samus) is labeled with FIX instead. Japan had no issues, as usual. Even before the blog goes up the western side has issues.

Pokemon Trainer's is weird. It's just gibbrish. data/bs/en_US/img/bfa8f5d87bf39f944034fee7faaedd12.jpg even in japan it's entirely different gibbrish data/bs/ja_JP/img/d4025b2f2556d3957636362c49efe4ba.jpg
Only one like that. Someone just got frustrated and keysmashed?

The Smash Direct gang are all 0802.
Isabelle is 0823. I guess they had her's prepared for like two weeks prior instead of a few days before.

There is one maybe-kind-of interesting thing. Dark Samus, Simon, Richter & K Rool are all labeled 0802, like I mentioned above, but Chrom is labeled 0608. Maybe Chrom was intended to be shown much earlier and they changed their minds? Or could just be someone mislabeling the thumbnails. Like I said, only maybe kind of interesting.

Banjo obviously isn't in the base game. However, if (and that's a BIG if) Nintendo and Microsoft come to an agreement to put BK/BT and other non-DK64 Rare games on the (potential) N64 Mini, then that could lead to Banjo being added as DLC somewhere down the line.

So you'd better hope that's this guy's announcement lol

I kind of am surprised dee didn't make it. Super popular in japan, and a kirby rep. I dont care about him at all, but it seems obvious.

Sakurai: It's not that I don't understand how that feels, but if you start saying that, it becomes "Why isn't Waddle Dee playable?" or Dry Bones, or Baby Peach. There'd be no end to it.

Now, that was from a post-Brawl interview, so many years ago and he has stepped back on several positions from that, like including characters who don't fight in their own games (The Animal Crossing crew, Wii Fit Trainer) and that comment was about generic Waddle Dees, not Bandanna Dee, who wasn't really differentiated into a character of his own at time... but I think he generally keeps that position in this case. There are obvious exceptions with Yoshi (who has his own sub-franchise) and the Pokemon, but he clearly avoids generic characters like that unless they're pretty much tied to the franchise's identity, without alternatives.

Even nowadays, the Bandanna Dee push is just a subset of the general push HAL gives the Waddle Dees. Generic Waddle Dees have more merchandising and presence in marketing than Bandanna Dee. For Smash, specifically, the push for Bandanna Dee is stronger exactly because people know how Sakurai feels about generic characters in Smash. However, Sakurai hasn't even acknowledged Bandanna Dee. Last game, in spite of using Return to Dreamland assets for trophies, there was no Bandanna Dee trophy at all. And, unless Sakurai received advanced information from HAL about Kirby Battle Royale and Star Allies (and there's no evidence of that at all) in the build up to this game Bandanna Dee's roles were even smaller than before the Wii U game - reduced to a background prop throwing food in the mainline games and then multiplayer only in a spin-off.

I've been keeping tabs on the Banjo Totaku figure they've announced but not shown so if there's any Banjo news I'd be it's that or some other 20th anniversary merch.

Speaking of that interview, Grant is echoing how I've felt for years.
Yeah this is where I am. I think, honestly and truly, that Yooka-Laylee has more of a chance to join Smash than anything Rare owns, which is saying something since I think YL stands almost zero chance. And, similarly, I think Minecraft is the only thing approaching what Microsoft would want to allow in Smash.

It's sad. I really would be excited for Bird and Bear. But, the chances are so cataclysmically low that I'm just not bothering to ask or hope for them. If Microsoft won't even use them, why would they let a rival company?

Bolded I had campaigned for back when the game was still in development. Then the game came out...and yeah, I doubt that's ever happening either which is for the best.

What happened to Rare in general is just a sad situation. I don't even care Nintendo didn't buy them, I just wish a third party studio would have. They could have had their cake and ate it too. Still able to release stuff with Nintendo while putting out Perfect Dark and Conker on other consoles.

At least we have DK, Diddy and K. Rool on the playable roster. There's at least some of Rare's old magic in Smash Bros.

That's very true. Even though I occasionally get depressed over what happened to Rare, it's nice that Nintendo was able to keep what Rare had made for them in Donkey Kong Country.

And if I'm being honest, the one IP that Rare took with them I actually miss is Banjo. Can't say I miss their other IPs that much.

And Dixie will likely join, only a matter of time. And she had Rare's pin on her hat!

Here's hoping! She's one of the few remaining characters I find myself wanting in the game.
