Anybody here have impressions on Bad North? I like the look of it but worry about the depth of the gameplay.

I enjoyed the game. The aesthetic was definitely a big draw for me, and the touch controls are very accurate.

Outside each stage, the gameplay is not super deep, as you have only three unit types and the upgrades are pretty straightforward. There's a bit of experimentation involved in figuring out which items work best with which unit types, but you'll probably settle on an optimal configuration after one or two playthroughs.

The interesting thing is the stages themselves, the way the AI moves is not always easy to predict. You have to learn when to send in your troops or when to have them retreat. Winning often comes down to strategic positioning and you can take advantage of the terrain in really creative ways. Before beginning a stage you'll want to look for features to determine what kinds of units will be most useful to defend a particular island. The procedural generation of the islands really shines, in my opinion.

What I've found annoying is permadeath. It works the first few runs, because you really feel the stakes of each battle are high. But after playing a while, I wish there was a mode that got rid of permadeath so I could try riskier strategies for bigger payoffs. I've often thought if I could retry stages it'd be a bit like a puzzle, trying to figure out what troops to send in to meet each wave and find the best positioning through trial and error.

Instead, permadeath encourages you to play safe, and the game starts to feel a bit repetitive when you play this way; there are a couple of troop configurations that will most likely get you through a campaign. It turns a bit formulaic.

Still, I've had fun with it, especially playing in short bursts or whenever I want to take a break from a bigger game. I've found this a perfect palette cleanser.

I agree with Foreshadows impressions except you can easily get around permadeath by simply exiting the game before each battle ends. It only saves character deaths at the end of battle, very easy to exit before the final enemy dies and bam! No more permadeath ;)

Is anyone else shockingly addicted to AND in 2D love with Speed Brawler? This game is so fun, slick, and stylish for a beat em up. Tons of movement options available: dash, double jump, wall dash, wall kickoff, dodging, countering, grabbing poles to boost, hitting barrels to use as rolling weapons, quick falling, punching/kicking, specials, ultra specials, tagging in/out with your 2nd character so they rush in and slam enemies, etc. The speed is fantastic. Music is great. And it's funny! No one told me it would be funny. NOTE: just make sure to play in airplane mode so the game loads/runs more smoothly. Its also great to play handheld :)

WHY HAVE I NEVER HEARD OF THIS DEVELOPER BEFORE?? THEY ARE SERIOUSLY TALENTED!!!!

Has WORK×WORK been announced for release in the west yet? its up for preload now in Japan and comes out Oct 4th, I didnt even know it was coming this soon.

http://www.japanesenintendo.com/post/178250210049
I've been keeping my eyes open for such news, but no luck so far. Was really hoping it would be a wild card announcement during the direct last week. Still, not entirely hopeless, Gal Metal got announced for localisation quite a while after it released in Japan. Hoping impressions are good when it comes out next month! If so, I might not be able to resist importing a physical copy on amazon.co.jp...

I blame Nintendo, I can't stop playing the fucking 'Yoshi' in NES, this game consumed my childhood and is as addictive as I remembered.

Between this and 'Super Mario Bros', they have surely achieved the objective of making me pay €20 for the online subscription once the free week ends.

Taking into account that in the entire 2018 I have only played 30 minutes online in a single game, this is laudable.

Or how to make to someone with zero interest in online games, to pay a service dedicated to online games, by taking the NES games as hostages.

I'm happy, but at the same time angry.

I love/hate Nintendo.

I'm trying to beat Gradius without Save states, only with the Continue Mode code. Last stage is too narrow and my fingers start to numb.

If someone want to check the code. Here is:
Quickly press Down, Up, B, A, B, A, B, A, B, then A on the Game Over screen.

In my case, the button prompts don't disappear once you start the game. They are always at the bottom of the screen.

And for me, the real NES experience is 4:3 and with a CRT shader, not only because the scanlines, and that is something that only people who played these games in old TVs can understand: these TVs not only added scanlines, but also a type of stretching in the image adding 3D effects to some objects due to the difference in the brightness through different colors, and how these colors were displayed. Indeed, 'Super Mario Bros' has one of the best uses of these type of advanced techniques playing with the depth of field, thanks to the contrast between colors in old tube displays.

A good CRT shader is not only about scanlines: scanlines filters have always existed. A CRT shader is a completely different thing. They are about imitating these type of 2D effects based in the geometry or the differences in the brightness.

And this CRT shader included in the emulator is atrocious, because they are trying to add the type of distortion and low quality image that you obtain with an inaccurate RF signal, instead of a RGB cable.

Having played some FDS Zelda after waking up, I see what you mean, it keeps telling you what the select and start buttons do even after you start. It wasn't as noticeable to me since the pixel perfect view made me focus more on the center rather than the bottom of the screen, but I can see why it would be annoying.

Honestly though, growing up with only a CRT TV until the end of 2014 due to me seeing no need to upgrade, I find none of the CRT filters on any collection to be accurate or worth it. They just add boring lines or curve the image, which kinda sucks and it also hurts my eyes. So I stick with Pixel Perfect since the game's image looks the absolute best it possibly could and I'm all for game collections that look like that.
DnfmKemUYAANtjX.jpg

I mean, if my TV could do what it did four years ago when I played on the Wii U VC (Pictured above), that would be nice, but I think a curved display is more of a novelty instead of the definitive way to play the game. There are lots of improvements they could do, though...

The Wii U is not a good example: it doesn't have a 240p display output, contrary to the Wii. So the games will appear with an interlaced image.

An interlaced image at 480i, it's different from a 240p image. Not the same type of scanlines and effects, because it will double the lines.

To connect a Wii U to a CRT TV doesn't have any sense, it will only deteriorate the image, displaying a blurry mess.

It's the same thing as when people cited the original Xbox as a good console for emulation: other example of a system that doesn't include a 240p output. And classic video games designed for a 240p display, tend to look horrible at 480i.

And there are some type of effects, I'm not talking of scanlines, that can only be achieved with a 240p display or an accurate CRT shader. For example, in the level 1-1 of 'Super Mario Bros', the blocks near to the first flag at the end of the level, were designed with a 3D effect simulating depth of field: this effect will be lost with a perfect and clean image.

In a few weeks and after some training, we will see tolkir using a dubber duck instead of a cheat code, every time that he completes a loop in 'Gradius'.

I'm seeing how is his future :)

Anyone got some good recommendations for some local-4-player games?

Looking for something to play with some friends this Friday.
I've got Mario Tennis, Mario Kart and some fighting games already, but atm there's some decent 4 player games missing. I was hoping to get Windjammers or Mario Party before then, but the release date doesn't line up sadly.
Thinking about Bomberman, but by now I'd only want to buy it during a sale - and it's not looking like there's one around the corner.

Anything I'd have to bring?
You should check out Sausage Sports Club.

I like it but I'll be honest, playing that and then Into the Breach, you won't touch Bad North. I was hyped for it and bought and played it a bit, then ITB came out the next week. I haven't touched Bad North since. I'd say save your money if you haven't bought it already

Thank you guys for all the replies! I've deiced to purchase the title alongside Into the Breach. Into the Breach is a game i've waited to come to mobile since it's release but couldn't wait any longer and pulled the trigger. Going to play through Bad North first and try to get the most out of it before diving into Into the Breach.

Welcome to the fourth monthly Pinball FX3 tournament for ResetEra! Every month we will run a 1-week tournament that only our community can participate in!

We took August off but it's time to get back to business! With the advent of classic Williams/Bally tables in Pinball FX3 in October, our tournament series will focus exclusively on them for the next several months. We will start with Fish Tales in October, which will be FREE for EVERYONE! Eventually we will start incorporating Zen's original tables again, but for the next few months you can be confident that all featured tables will be from the first two Williams table packs.

Before we make the shift, we're lighting the fireworks of Adventure Land, a fantastic table from the Carnivals & Legends pack that was free for the first week of its release.

*A Note About Nintendo Online Services & Pinball FX3*
Now that NOS has launched PBFX3 has gone behind the paywall, but fear not! Zen Studios has confirmed that they've already submitted an update that will re-classify PBFX3 as F2P and therefore exclude it from requiring NOS! In the meantime, the 7 Day Free Trial for NOS will get everyone through this month's tournament (5 days). Afterwards no one will need NOS to participate!

First video of the Sega Ages release of 'Sonic the Hedgehog' including all the options.

It includes a digital manual, a superb CRT shader with an option for clean scanlines, a lot of extra modes centered in scoring or in speedrunning the game, save states, every additional option can be disabled...

This is how video game classics should be released. M2 has showed once again that they are the absolute kings of bringing back classic games in a respectful way with the source material, and with accurate emulators that are a leap behind of the rest of companies.

And they show how unfortunate is when video game licenses end in the hands of other companies not showing the same level of respect to the source material or the same skill level in the technical part. I'm looking at the recent 'Capcom Beat'em Up Bundle' or to those Johnny Turbo's Data East ports without dip switches.

What's wrong with the Beat'em Up Bundle?

At $20/year I can't quite get frustrated enough to pass, but I am far from enthusiastic. The VC situation is a farce.
I think everyone assumed SNES, N64, etc would eventually come to the service as part of the Nintendo Entertainmemt System, but I don't think that's quite the plan.

Based on how you are prompted to download the NES app and the data mined retro controllers I think they are going to launch a seperate app for each system which will be treated as an add-on to Nintendo Online Service. So $20 for NOS w/ NES and an additional $10-20 for each additional classic system. There will probably be something like a $60/year bundle with all of them.

That's pretty frustrating since it seems there is simply no way to get classic Nintendo games without being subbed to NOS. VC is essentially exclusive to this service. You can't just buy the games you want if you only want a few.

That's almost as terrible as releasing a $60 set of wireless NES controllers that only work with curated selection of NES games and are completely useless if you aren't enrolled in a subscription service.

Wait. The NES joycons are locked to the NES games? Is that a joke?

Also, I'm not big on the subscription model for VC (if it's a response to their lukewarm VC sales on previous systems, their pay per game model didn't work because they completely fucked it up on three different systems) but the bigger issue for me is that the library grows at a snail's pace. We're never going to get to any of the deep cuts, which are the NES's greatest strength. There are so many amazing games nobody's ever heard of. As much as I love Super Mario Bros. 3, I probably own a dozen versions of it.

Please Understand.

In any case, potential purchasers should be aware that these special NES controllers can only be used for a handful of classic games, and they will become completely unusable if you stop subscribing to Nintendo's online service.

The box even has prominent "ONLINE" branding:

Nintendo simply doesn't guarantee that the controllers work with software outside of the NES emulator, most likely because lacks analog sticks and quite a few buttons but there's no reason to think it won't work with something like, say, Shovel Knight. We'll just have to wait until *checks calendar* December good lord.

The NES controllers will most likely work with any game that only uses the A, B, L, and R buttons (or have the in-game option to remap the buttons to these four). Nintendo clearly states in the FAQ that they aren't guaranteed to work with other games beyond the NES app, not that the controllers don't work with other games, period.

Played some River City Ransom with my sister last night.
How have I never played this game before? Now I get the hype - it's amazing. This would have blown my little mind if I'd played it at launch.

I know it's well regarded by a certain niche but I have no idea why it's not regarded as a classic in more mainstream circles.

River City Ransom is one of my favorite NES games and favorite games of all time, it's amazing and so repayable.

The River City (Kunio-kun) series has lots of gems that are sadly fairly obscure in the west. If you own a 3DS, I suggest giving River City Tokyo Rumble a try, it's one of the greats, and River City Rival Showdown is an interesting remake of RCR which is worth a look too.

There's a collection of all the Famicom games releasing in Japan for Switch (and every other current platform) later this year as well, which includes american versions of some of the titles as well. I really hope it gets released here but I'll happily import it otherwise.

Well you are going to far with your speculation :P

I don't see them asking that much for subscription. Don't forget the 20$ is for a list of stuff (online, cloud saving etc) and it's called Nintendo Switch Online not NES Online.
Don't forget Nintendo's historical views on the monetary value of its software library.

$60/year would be super cheap coming from Nintendo. PS Now is $99.

I'm pretty confident their plan is to charge for a sub to each system seperately. I can't prove it but I think it's pretty obvious.

A single SNES game is $7.99 on VC. I bet they charge $15-20 for a yearly sub to SNES.

I hate voice chat as a rule.

I did think the way the app worked was pretty cool though. It pumped out a push notification when Mario Kart started and the room full of online people were there. I also liked the game specific info on Splatoon, that was really neat.

I'm totally on board with this concept of decentralising account/game stuff off the machine, keeping it light and having everything else on my phone.

This doesnt make sense. At all.

If someone doesn't know yet, you can play with NES Classic Mini Pad or SNES Classic Mini Pad on Switch. Only you need a Wiimote and Magic-NS.
I'm playing Gradius with the NES Classic Mini pad. Also I completed four Mega Man classics before with it (got used to the input lag of the collection).
