A dumpster
This looks terrible

I don't understand why people buy these like emulators are easy as fuck to use and if that's too much work just a PS1 from a mom and pop.

lol, it really blows my mind that someone would think this was part of some long term nefarious plan.
Yea man, the lack of BC on the PS4 is just because Sony actually hates money.

This limited edition novelty box definitely has nothing to do with it, no way. I mean, just look at how awesome the Virtual Console service has become since the NES classic launched!

This is kinda neat and I'm curious to see what solution they're using but, as with the other mini consoles, it's not that useful to me.

Mainly because I prefer just using original hardware on a PVM. The games just look best there.

That said, and I know it would never ever happen, if Sony were to implement the equivalent of PGXP in a box like this, it would be far more interesting. With a limited selection of games included, I don't see why this wouldn't be possible either.

No Dualshock is pretty bad, worse control in a few games & no Ape Escape, which i think was DS exclusive, for $100 it really should have been 2 Dual Shocks, bonus points if they could be used on PS4.

Sony fanboy alert! Was one of the first in the UK to own a Japanese version (1994). A game dev friend traveled over to Japan, and returned a day later. I was £700 quid lighter. I bought a new 24" Sony Trinitron TV with the then swanky SVHS input for a further £450

I've been watching a lot of My Life In Gaming lately, so I think I might have to wait to see what the video output is like on this thing.

Do want, though.

Give me...

- Symphony of the Night
- Metal Gear Solid
- Crash Team Racing
- Bloody Roar 2
- Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
- Tenchu: Stealth Assassins
- Spider-Man
- Tomb Raider 2
- Vagrant Story
- Twisted Metal 2
- Jet Moto

I don't know why they wouldn't lead with some of these games if they were included though. I would put the Spyro and Crash games on that list as well but it seems a bit redundant considering the remasters. Also, I wouldn't mind getting different games in some of the series I listed such as the original Bloody Roar, Tenchu 2, or another Tomb Raider. Along those same lines, I wouldn't mind seeing another Final Fantasy in addition to VII.

It stopped them from doing SNES, apparently. PS1 games have never been available for PS4, and there has been no announcement of them coming to PS4. Your point?

Point being that is straight up stupid to consider that just because Sony is releasing a collectable near christmas following a formula that printed money for Nintendo that this means it's a sign they will never consider putting PS1 games on the PS4.

Don't get me wrong, I'm going in. But I don't think those PS1 era games stood the test of time as good as the SNES era games. We shall see.

I don't agree. I think the PS1 has the best library of games next to the PS2. Especially if they include the big ones on this. Their selection is already really strong based on these 5.

I'd be all about this but honestly, I invested in an XRGB-Mini when I want to play on my HD TV and I have a SONY TINITRON when I want to play on my CRT. Plus I get to use all my existing PS1 games that way.

Still though, I'm really happy that this is a thing.

You're right, Sony are releasing this as a charitable endeavour as a way for everyone to play games of old as easily as possible. It was the only way they could do it, which is handy because it is in fact the fairest and most consumer friendly method.

I think the hacking potential for this will be significantly lowered because of the size of PS1 games. All depends on how much storage it has, I suppose.

No analogue sticks?

That's not good, although maybe the included games won't include the likes of Ape Escape?

RE2 and MGS should be ok with a DPAD.

Never owned a PSX so I'm actually tempted to get one of these.

Kind of funny they literally copied the "Classic" moniker from Nintendo.

PS1 on a Sony Trinitron is still a treat today, games like SOTN look incredible, PS1 games kinda look like crap on a HDTV.

lol, it really blows my mind that someone would think this was part of some long term nefarious plan.

If PS1 classics were available on PS4 like they were on PS3 then you would be able to buy the specific game you want for $5-8, instead Sony are giving you a set list 20 games to play in a $100 bundle.

If they were selling you a meaningful piece of hardware it'd have an optical drive and play the PS1 games you already own.

I got really hyped for the SNES Classic, bought it, and have barely played it. I'm gonna try to avoid getting swept up in this nostalgia train because I'm sure it would be pretty much the same situation if I bought one of these.

These mini replications of consoles are so cute though.....

It was like Sony saw Square putting FF7 on the Switch and this was the retaliation. /s

That said though, I will admit that as someone who didn't really jump onto the Sony train until towards the end of the PS2's peak, it will be great to finally check out some of the classic PS games I never got the chance to play. Hope we get to find out the rest of the games that will get featured soon.

R4 without Analog... okay... that's not how i want to play that.
And since it doesn't have a full size pad connector, you cannot use your jogcon.

The USB power is so low on the totem pole. I don't understand why people would get angry about it now.

It's 5v. I've got extra phone chargers and even USB ports on my TV, cable box, and other consoles. If it were a portable, maybe I would be more critical.

Yep. I definitely think the lack of PS1 games on PS4 is because they wanted to juice sales of a collector's item 5 years in the future. Totally.

This whole trend of removing console features to sell these novelty plastic ROM boxes is absurd. No thanks Sony, this shit should be playable on PS4.

This just pushes people to emulate on PC instead of giving Sony money.
Yeah. I really wish game companies took game preservation and accessibility seriously.

I can watch almost any movie from any time period on a blu-ray player, and it can play DVDs from 20 years ago. I understand video game consoles are closed systems - not gonna play a Nintendo game on a Sony system - but they have the technology to let us play older discs from earlier consoles on modern devices (a $35 Raspberry Pi can run most PSX games) and they're not doing it because they know they can charge consumers again and again.

It's consumerism that as always wins over treating this medium as an art form with large libraries worth preserving and making accessible for years to come.

There are a lot of PS1 game that have stood the test of time.
FFT, Valkyrie Profile and Legend of Mana, for example, have classic timeless visual.

I think some PS1 classics are $12-15 on PS3, for what it's worth.

The novelty of these is cool, sure, but it's definitely contributed to the total lack of classic games on other systems from the companies that do them.
