Wait has it been tested/confirmed that both players can play online simultaneously if the person with the sharing account set as primary uses a different account to play on the primary Switch?

If so, that's both cloud saves and online restriction solved.
That's correct yeah, works exactly like PS4.

I just tested this out. The same game was open on both Switches, but the accounts were different. Both were connected to the internet, didn't get booted.
Welp, I'm glad to be wrong. Can you test getting booted with the same account on two systems playing the same game?

Trying to play on the same account on both gets you booted yeah. Takes about 15 seconds for it to recognise that the account is playing somewhere else. The primary console gets to keep playing but the secondary one doesn't.

Just to confirm, this just worked for us.
Can you try playing a game on both systems with different accounts? I'd assume it just check whether that license is in use or not, but I could have sworn Sony described their system this way as well and the primary swap throws that out of the window.

Edit: Didn't refresh. Confirmed. I won't get any use out of it though since I don't want to have to be connected constantly. Standard option is enough for me.

Hmmm. Can a secondary account, play the games of a non-primary account if said account is online?

About damn time. This is great news but damn Nintendo should have advertised this considering how shitty the online service is.

I can't wrap my feeble mind around this; I'm going to wait a day or two for someone to produce a tutorial video with nice, simple graphics to follow along.

So the sharing console has to use the shared account, and the original primary console can use an alternate account? What about the reverse, have you tried that?

That's right yeah. The reverse doesn't work because only the person who owns the content can open it on secondary consoles.

can you deactivate your primary console even if you don't have a secondary one? like if your console got lost or stolen

Also Nintendo now allows deactivating your primary console through a website! No longer need to call them

  • Off-device deactivations can be done by visiting accounts.nintendo.com, selecting "Shop Menu", and then "Deactivate Primary Console".
this is good, right? i remember many people asking for this in a recent thread

I figured, the master console has ownership rights so it can use any account. The shared console has to use the owning account to prove ownership and share.

Logical.

so something that doesn't make sense.
a secondary console has to be connected to the internet to start the game, but the primary console can obviously play offline. does that mean two people can easily play a game at the same time, if one of them stayed offline?

That is my understanding, if the primary is offline then both could play at the same time. I think this means it won't work for multiplayer games like Splatoon 2 or smash online.

Both can play the same game online also. It works the same as ps4 and Xbox ones game sharing.

but it says in the OP the game will pause if another player using the same account wanted to start the game

The primary console has full ownership of titles installed to it. So the user could swap accounts (on the primary designated console) and still use the software. The sharing console HAS TO log on to the owning (primary shared) account to be allowed to even use the software, but with this method two people could share a game AND be online.

What ever system has the primary account you gotta use your secondary account. On the other switch you will have to use the account that's primary on the other but always have to be online since it's already the primary on the other switch. A user a page back confirmed this works. Its the same on PS4 and Xbox one

Just look up a PS4 or Xbox one tutorial on this and it will explain it.

So if a non-online game is played, like Stardew Valley, can it only be accessed by the person I'm sharing with if they're connected to the internet still? Or is that only for online games

If the primary console uses a different account to start the game and the secondary console uses the purchasing account I'm still pretty sure it will pause the game when both are connected online.
Nope, check my earlier replies in the thread. It only pauses the game when the same account is used. Using different accounts works just fine.

somehow i doubt this is the case. i don't see nintendo allowing two player online multi with one copy.

guess it's confirmed to work. pretty big deal.

For anyone to play your purchased games on their switch without using your account. Your account will have to be the primary on their system. Then you would have to remain online to play your games on your switch since your account isn't the primary anymore.

It's simple: I booted up SNK Heroines on my second Switch using a secondary account linked to my primary. On my primary Switch I started the game using a different account on my primary system.

The Switch can trivially verify the original ownership by parsing the ticketblob for properly installed, RightsID-signed titles on a primary console (which is the only place they could be). Thus, it will authenticate any software on said console as valid regardless of the account trying to boot or go online, and will be granted a valid dauth token so it can access online.

On a secondary console, however, this would not be possible without the Primary Account logging in and authenticating the ownership for a "wrong" console, basically acting as a temporary granting of a license or RightsID. This is why an internet connection is required, otherwise the Switch will not be able to verify ownership and won't launch the software nor would it be granted a valid dauth token for online.

This is why this works, and why it works on any console.

Man, I mentioned multiple times that Nintendo should just copy Sony/MS on how they do the online service. They listened, it seems lol.
