I know people were wanted this, but do note, if you want 2 consoles to be playing at the same time the primary needs to be offline while the secondary has to be online(for the entire session)

You could kind of do this before, by manually deactivating the primary, activating another console via that user, and then undoing that to regain access. It was a pain in the ass for sure, but this isn't much different, other than massively more convenient.

So if the game can only be activated from the primary account (mine for example), how can my brother play Mario Kart 8 if he is a secondary? And do we need the family share plan to do this?

I'll add my account to my brothers Switch so he can finally play Sonic Mania. So glad this is finally a thing.

Yup. Not good for online games, unlike PS4, and it will take some communication between sharies.
It's good for people that may have multiple Switches, like one upstairs and one downstairs, and now they can just take their save data from the cloud and continue to play without sitting at the same unit. Otherwise it will need communication between the two parties of when the primary Switch is in use or not.

I figured Nintendo had to implement some kind of digital game sharing if they wanted to increase Switch adoption from "one per family" to "one per family member". I just didn't expect it so soon.

Yet another MEGATON that somehow went through the advertisers heads...
What's wrong with Nintendo?
They love their surprises.

They should have made this a big deal, at least it is for me. I can finally sell my cousin on several indie games! He thinks most indie games are just nostalgia/cash grabs.

Does this work with DLC only?

Am I missing something? It says:
  • While using a non-primary console, downloadable content can only be started by the user that purchased the content.
Does that not mean the downloaded games?

How is this gonna work? If I want to play games that my cousin has on his switch, how would I play it? Bullet list it for me like a dumbass

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in order for this to work between say me and my brother, I would have to let my brother have my account on his system and that system be the primary system so he can play games on his profile. Then I would have the secondary system with my account on it but that would restrict me from taking my portable system because I would have to have Internet access whenever I wanted to play something.

Too restrictive for my tastes.

- Your cousin stays offline
- You play the game connected to the internet
- If he gets online or you lose connection your game will pause

its how it is on ps4 the secondary person needs internet access to see that you have the license for the game.

That's pretty awesome news. I currently account share on PS4/Xbox 1 with my brother so adding the Switch to that will save us some more money.

Some folk have posted that this was a known thing before but, man, I genuinely didn't know about this. This is awesome! Something I wouldn't expect out of a Nintendo online service :P

We need a few other things before we truly reach 2013 :P

This is like some weird hodgepodge of weird Nintendo rules so not even 2001 or 2005 features but some 2013 features

This does not seem to work as easily as ps4/Xbox game sharing from what read. I feel like we need clarification.

I hope I'm wrong but the bullet point from OP makes it sound like if you're on a non-primary console, the downloaded games can only be started by the user that purchased it. Do we have confirmation that this is not the case?

Keeping expectations in check, but this is super hype. If I can use my friends' accounts and they can use mine to play games, that's incredible. Even with the always online/one person at a time thing.

Announce the online service - with underwhelming features - to millions via Nintendo Direct/social media, to the scorn of many. Stealth drop features that people are actually excited about...

'Wii U marketing team' came back from vacation?
This.

This is actually a feature people want compared to their half baked online plan.

I might actually get a second switch now eventually for my son to have his own

But how do we make that work? Do I need to add my account to the other Switch?

Example: Me and my brother sign in to each other's Switch and make our account the primary on the others Switch. I can now play his games on mine and vice versa with our own accounts. Only drawback is for example I buy XB2 on my console where I'm the non primary so I have to play online while he can play it on his without internet connection. Hope that helps.

Edit: We currently account share on PS4 and that's how it works and this sounds like it's the same process.

Holy shit, I wasn't expecting this. I might buy another switch for our household now, and definitely feel more comfortable with digital purchases.

The PS4 isn't a portable system though. It's a different usage scenario.
I don't get it. How easy would you like Nintendo to make it for you to not give them money? If you had one physical copy of a game, you couldn't play it on two systems...

Anything else is encouraging abuse. I can already think of a few of games I wouldn't have bought if this was already around prior.

Nintendo now allows deactivating your primary console through a website! No longer need to call them

  • Off-device deactivations can be done by visiting accounts.nintendo.com, selecting "Shop Menu", and then "Deactivate Primary Console".
Only once per year you can do Off-device deactivations
Holy shit. No more "call Nintendo" bullshit if a Switch gets lost, stolen or broken. Hallelujah!

Why did two massive changes to Nintendo's online account system not appear in the Nintendo Direct but a recap of shit we already knew did? Guess that is just another trademark Nintendo decision that will never make any sense.

Confusing but alright then, and how do we sign into each other Switch's?

Wait this is huge. Basically every game I buy on PS4 is half price because I game share it.

Also you can both play the game at the same time if the primary console has Wi-Fi turned off right? So it's fine for anything except playing online games together.

So we can't play the same game at the same time, but can we play different games at the same time? Or if I'm using the primary Switch, the secondary won't work? So I can put the primary switch offline, this way the secondary one won't see the primary online?

Thanks.

What are you talking about? The always online connected for validation is just too restrictive for my tastes on a portable system. I don't care on a console since it never moves and is almost always online. Portable system usage for me doesn't always have an online connection.
