So trainer customisation has been a pretty important part in personalising your Pokemon journey since its inclusion in Pokemon X/Y back in 2013. If you've got dark skin, it was nice to finally be able to play as someone that looked like you. If the default outfits weren't to your taste, there was a plethora of different clothing in the game for you to mix and match with to make the trainer look the way you want them to. If you have a specific eye colour, you could change it. If you wanted a specific hairstyle, that was there too. It was all really simple stuff, and maybe not as varied as it could be, but it was a step in the right direction, making the series more inclusive, as well as making everyone look different online which was really cool.

Game Freak did not include customisation in the 2014 release, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, citing the reason that it was a remake and that dressing up and fashion were a Kalos thing. This of course was an excuse (an extremely bad one imo) and thankfully, customisation was brought back in the 2016 release Sun and Moon, adding additional skin tones, a lot more clothing, and the ability to dye clothes.

So now we've come to Let's Go. None of the footage and screenshots show any variation in skin tone, eye colours or hair styles. The only outfits there are are specific outfits that match your starter Pikachu and Eevee that can dress up. In reality, all of the customisation has seem to gone to the starter Pokemon instead of the trainer.

Now nothing has been confirmed but it seems strange to me that we are two months away from release with nothing about this feature, especially given their PR has specifically made a point to say that this game is for everyone. It is also especially strange when Pokemon Go, the game this game is trying to attract its audience from, has had all of this trainer customisation from day 1 and has only continued to expand in support.

Do you think Let's Go will have trainer customisation? Will you care if it's not there? Does this make the game more or less casual friendly?

I don't think there will be trainer customization which sucks. I like playing as a Latino looking male when I can in games and my daughters likes doing the same but female with a hair style the closely reflects hers.

Something I've been wondering since the reveal, but keep dismissing because I thought it would be crazy: Is your character's sex locked depending on what version of the game you buy? My son wants the Eevee version but I know he wouldn't like it if he had to play as a girl.

They even bothered to make new characters for this game so it'd be hilariously sad if it really didn't have it, but that seems like the running theme.

It's gonna be there. This is an odd worry to have. Funny thing is, even though I'm black, I never make my character in Pokémon so because they don't have enough customization to make it not look weird because of his hair. They need just a little more customization

Well, GF never highlighted abilities, a day/night cycle (remember when everyone was disappointed when gen III removed it?) and hold items this whole time; and those are all gone (IVs are still in, but not breeding... oof).

Outlook not so good.

Surely it will have at least the same level of customisation as Pokemon Go?

The fact that all they could show last Direct was the new HMs and some haircuts tells me they don't have much to show. Usually Pokémon marketing is nice because they always have surprises up their sleeve right until launch. But with what we saw this direct... I'm not so sure.

I figured they'd have some kind of minor customization at least. Seems like something that's here to stay, at least in mainline, non-remake games.

They have it in Go so I'd be surprised if they didn't have it here.
