This seems a bit more logical than box lol theory tbh :
https://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/9gqnwp/blog_theory_predicting_a_character_count/

TL;DR of the calculations is that the average number of characters posted per week is 2.9. 2.9 characters per week for the remaining 12 weeks leaves 6-8 unrevealed characters remaining. 8 characters remaining would bring the roster count up to 80 on the official website and would reach a landmark number."

It doesn't "need" to reach 80, but I could see it get pretty close easily.
A friend was wondering if a character wasn't removed from the direct also because of the earthquake (Robin/Vlad/Isaac with his Earth Djinn ? Whatever cinematic with shattered earth ?).

So, all this time I was cheating... : (.
Yeah I've been thinking this whole time Sakurai was going for the solid 80 (including echoes) and I have said as much before. Still believe it. It's easily within his grasp.

Indeed.
Not to mention how the game got some heavy communication until now.
Would it make any sense if suddenly for 2 and half month we get a wrestler pokemon, blond Ryu as an echo, Nomura and that it ?

I don't believe so. We'll get a few more.

Even if it had to be Incineroar and a bunch of echoes I would still think we're hitting 80. But I am positive there will be at least 2-3 more completely unique characters.

I really want Minecraft's dude to make it in. So many moveset possibilities, plus probably one of the most hype inducing announcements for the greater public, especially the kids.

Would be awesome.

Him, and Pearl/Marina are my most wanted newcomers.

I've been hearing a lot about Inceneroar, that would be awesome as well. Please no Geno lol.
The salt from people trying to argue why one of the biggest games of all time doesn't deserve a character would be amazing

You fixed all our avatars :) :) :)

I definitely feel the hint of Skull Kid and Isaac from Sakurai. You'd think he'd hint at characters, but it he may not. Skull Kid can be a boss.

Maybe he can make Isaac a boss too lol

The only number theory I currently take stock in is 5 new stages. Of those 5, I think 1 is Monster Hunter (probably no newcomer), 1 is Minecraft (probably no newcomer), Pokemon maybe gets one (it's the only returning series big enough to get a new stage, but it also already has 5 returning stages that weren't in Smash Wii U) and the remaining 2-3 are new franchises.

This would cement 2-3 newcomers not from a current series + Incineroar, possibly Skull Kid, and echoes. It'd match the 6-8 unrevealed characters pretty well, and I think at most 5 of those are full newcomers.

Where'd the Monster Hunter getting a stage come from. Are people assuming the one in the E3 direct is the one? Looks more like a flat plane for a boss fight for the Spirits mode.

I honestly think it's a stage since it's visually designed to look like an area from Monster Hunter. I'm guessing it's a scrolling stage that follows Rathalos, stopping at points for the players to fight him. Alternatively, maybe the footage is from the Spirits mode, but the background is re-used in a Monster Hunter stage.

Overall, I just don't think that they'd put all that work into background for a Monster Hunter area, but then only use it for a single player boss fight. Even most the SSE boss fights just had generic landscapes for their background. The only one that didn't was on the Halberd, which was a stage.

Current feelings: they didn't make a MonHun background just for the boss arena, but there's no regular stage at launch either. Instead, the background is used further in Spirits mode or something, somehow.

I can see that Mon Hun "area" also being a stage, just having some more obstacles or furniture. Maybe a camp with one of them cat chefs cooking, chucks out a bit of healing food every so often? Or just some destructible rock platforms?

I mean anything involving Felynes gets a plus from me. They're cute. I'd like a Palico echo fighter, but I'd gladly take an assist or them in the background.

Dracula's boss fight in the Simon trailer took place in a flat arena too, suggesting that footage of Dracula is also from Spirits Mode.

I think it's very safe to assume whatever possible MonHun stage is for Multiplayer (even if it's the Steppe shown in the Rathalos fight) is NOT a flat arena.

I could deff see a Palico being a playable fighter more than just the Hunter.. More personality, cuter outfits and victory poses. If we're going to get any bipedal feline it better be one with goggles and a hammer.

If you believe this post you believe Haruka Amami is coming to Smash cos I pretty much said the same thing (weirdly on the same day).

T3GzPNU.png

We got the Pocket Camp Splatoon event revealed a few days later and we did indeed get a Isabelle in Smash announcement and Animal Crossing Switch tease.
Sorry BGBW you didn't specify that Ken, Incineroar and Isabelle were the only characters before box theory and Vergeben comments validated said claim. Haruka deconfirmed.

My personal take on the leaks (and I will have to word this diplomatically with my newfound mod position)

The Smash leaks have generally been very safe. No major leaker predicted Richter Belmont in Smash. I suspect only pieces of the puzzle were actually leaked and not just guessed. There remains large swaths of unknown info.

That's only if we still get three characters per week but I could see them easily change it up since we only got two characters last week, and really depend on us getting three characters update during final week (first week of December) as well .

With Incineroar and Ken, we will hit about 76 characters which is pretty impressive so you are implying that we are going to get 4 more characters another than those two characters?

I'm not fully convinced that we are getting four more characters outside of Incineroar and Ken for base roster when the game is out. I can see 80+ after the post-game support if they are going for that.

I'm implying only 2 more is a joke and it will never happen especially these 2 as "final".
And its about if I like them or not of course.

But I'm not saying it will definitely be 80. Personaly I'd say inbetween. 4, to 6 more characters, echo included.

That's a pretty good theory, it's certainly plausible. I could see it happen. But currently, it's more likely that it's just a boss battle stage for the Spirits mode. Because we've seen something similar with the Dracula fight. The stage was different from Dracula's Castle, it was also flat.

I do think we'll get a similar stage like the Ancestral Steppe. One that isn't flat and empty, I guess there will be breakable rocks/structures just like in MH4U.

Current feelings: they didn't make a MonHun background just for the boss arena, but there's no regular stage at launch either. Instead, the background is used further in Spirits mode or something, somehow.
I agree, this is very likely. The same was done with SSE in Brawl. Lots of boss battle stages were just that, they weren't playable in regular modes.

I assumed the ancestral steppe area was just using those assets from generations? A stage is very possible but I don't think too much work went into that arena

If the 108 stages is real I'm predicting a Yoshi's Crafted World stage. Yoshi's Woolly World stage came before that game released. That stage isn't in Smash Ultimate. I could see they decided to make a Yoshi's Crafted World stage instead, but maybe couldn't show it yet.

Incineroar is dumb. Why? Decidueye is just as much if not more popular, and there's yet to be a lone grass starter playable character. Decidueye would've been perfect.

Grass gets shit on even when not in Pokémon lmao.

So the Kingdom Hearts 3 box proves you can have Sora without the other Disney characters yeah?

Mickey, Donald and Goofy are there but yeah, it's always been the case that Sora works fine alone. All of the Nintendo handheld KH games even have him without Donald and Goofy. The only possible issue is the default keyblade having a Mickey head as its keychain.

If that was an issue (it's not), I don't think anyone would be too upset with him using Oathkeeper or something.

Help, is something wrong with me? I think I like this Suzuho avatar that BGBW picked out for me, it's weirdly growing on me since the Direct and I feel like I'll feel bad when I retire it. Is this some kind of psychological warfare or am I just going crazy? I thought the only crazy thing about me was being onboard the Smash hype train, but maybe I am just crazy in general

They could change the keychain honestly if it was the only thing keeping them from using Sora. Usually 3rd parties are super faithful to their source in Smash but it would be minor.
