I'd much rather they make DC properties since Warner owns DC and also since they're the only studio putting out any decent DC content.

Marvel's got good stories right now.

I'm convinced Rocksteady is working on Superman or Justice League.

It'll be the best piece of entertainment either of these IP have served up in years.

Sucker Punch after Ghost of Tsushima if they are down for a Marvel Game, they can and will pull it off. That being said isn't there a very ambitious Avengers game in development at Crystal Dynamics? Rocksteady can totally nail Wonder Woman-Batman-Superman crossover game. As for a marvel game from Rocksteady, I'd say black panther!

I don't think they would do it but I think they could make a great Captain America game
Sony Santa Monica would do great with the captain America franchise if it had a similar battle system to God of War. It would have been awesome if Sony secured the rights to all marvel properties and tasked their teams to expand their studios to accommodate an additional game in the marvel universe, and share technology amongst all these games. Thereby creating Marvel Gaming Universe, like the MCU.

I doubt this is ever going to happen now because square has the rights to the avengers if I'm not mistaken.

Seems like a missed opportunity to me by both marvel and Sony. I think using established, licences properties is significantly easier, more time efficient and lower risk than creating developing a new IP, but if I were Sony, there is no way I would do this in lieu of developing new IP alongside developing marvel games.

An office would have to be set up specifically catering to these game within Sony because there would have to be a singular vision unifying all the disparate games, like Kevin Feige for marvel studios.

I know all this is practically impossible though. It's just conjecture.

To answer the question in OP: No, there is probably more chance of Sony doing what I outlined than rocksteady developing a marvel property. Haha

Ghost of Tsushima is Sucker Punch. Insomniac is totally making Spider-Man 2 (I think it might have already been confirmed?).

If you meant SP... Well, they certainly could, but seeing as they already worked on a superhero IP for quite long and also how exciting (for the developers and for us) and unique GoT looks, I doubt it (and I would hate it, I want GoT to be built as an ongoing series of at least a couple of games).

Man, I'm very curious about that Avengers game. It seems quite far away, though!

Yeah for sure but their tone is usually more serious, a Daredevil game would work fine for them I think.

Thought so, haha.

Honestly, playing Spider-Man was quite reminiscent to me of my time Second Son (which I only played late last year). I had a blast with both games despite wanting more out of the main path and the side content. And both are just incredibly good looking.

i want them to make a TMNT game damn it. it would work so well with the foundation laid out in the arkham games. batman is the only decent DC hero and they've done that. so i don't want to see anything else DC. there are some good marvel options, and WB have made marvel lego games. but i just don't see it happening.

No. But mainly because I don't consider any other Marvel characters fit for an open world game. Just Spider-Man, but that's not gonna happen any time soon.

Spider-Man worked because of the fun traversal way and the city of New York. Batman worked because of the fun traversal way and the Arkham environment(s). In Knight, they found a good excuses to make the city empty, but that will probably not work another time.

Super- / Ironman won't work. They can fly to the moon if they want. How are you gonna put that in a game without it looking like NMS.

I'd rather see Rocksteady make a new Batman in a fully open Gotham city with citizens in it like Spider-Man.

By the way, I fired up Knight a while ago on my Pro and 4K HDR TV and it has pretty bad aliasing compared to the newer open world titles. So I don't think it holds up really good against new games. It runs smooth though.

If Rocksteady is making a Superman game I an confident in their ability to raise the bar for super hero games again.

These guys are so talented, they are still the undisputed champs of Comic book games, but im not sure id want them to make more of these type's of games. Something original, any 3rd person story heavy game would be great. They came up with alot of great design ideas that other games reuse, so let them flex their creative muscle and show all what the next step is.

While I agree that devs should be allowed to venture off and create their own IP, Rocksteady is ultimately owned by WB and the latter doesn't invest in new IP (they've always used their own properties). Rocksteady's next game is almost guaranteed to be a DC title.

Man, hell nah.

Rocksteady + TMNT is the satisfying answer here. Injustice 2 already showed y'all how the TMNT models would potentially look like.

The dual team fighting in Arkham Knight already showed a character switching system during battle.

There's so many other things besides superheroes that should be licensed out for AAA treatment. (e.g. He-Man....RoboCop).

I imagine a big part of that is that it never got a Pro/X patch. Based on how it looks on PC (gorgeous), I think it would hold up really well if they put out a patch to take advantage of the stronger consoles.

Town adjacent to Silent Hill
I don't want Rocksteady to make more superhero games, nor anyone else either for that matter. The video games industry copying Hollywood's homework is nothing new, but I'm not sure if we need another industry contributing to the already oversaturating superhero market. I was already past the point where I'm completely disinterested in whatever dude-in-armoured-tights du jour thing that comes out years ago, and this feeling's only gotten worse. The thing that amplifies this lack of interest is that this dearth of creativity usually also extends to the gameplay layer, with highly iterative, paint-by-numbers game design.

I hope Rocksteady gets to work on their own IP, and show what they can do. I'd like to think they've proven themselves enough to have earned the opportunity.

Question: What other properties does WB own (not comic) that Rocksteady can do? Any other sci fi/fantasy/etc from the WB IP vault?

Rocksteady is owned by WB, so no. In the case of Traveller's Tales, the Lego deal with Marvel was already made prior, so TT had an in by proxy.

I'm seeing Blade Runner in there. How fucking awesome would a third person Blade Runner game by Rocksteady be. With the atmosphere of the old movie, that is.

Agreed. Especially on the heels of Cyberpunk.

Also a narrative driven Exorcist game could be nuts. I know Rocksteady touches on horror and surrealism in the Arkham games so that could be very well done.

  • Sucker Punch - 4 years to show Gameplay of new IP
  • CD Project - 3 years to show gameplay of new IP
  • KojiPro - 3 years to show gameplay of New IP
  • Bioware - 5 years to show gameplay of New IP
  • Guerrilla Games - 4 years to show gameplay of new IP
  • Media Molecule - Working on their new IP for 7 years and 9 months now with no end is sight.
  • Rockstar - 7 years to show gameplay of RDR2.

Rocksteady - 3 years since release of Arkham Knight. Nothing to show.

I dont know whats going on in the industry but these games are in preproduction for far too long. i am surprised publishers are willing to give these studios 5-6 years to make a new IP. I miss last gen when 2 -3 years was good enough for devs to make a new IP then another 2 years to give us a badass sequel like Uncharted 2, mass effect 2, AC2 or Arkham City. now we have to wait 6 goddamn years just to get the first game and another god knows how many years to see a sequel.

it also makes me appreciate studios like Respawn who were able to make Titanfall 2 in like 2 and a half years after starting from scratch with Titfanfall 1 and shipping it in three years. Naughty Dog has released 3 games in the last 5 years with another one due next year. the Black Flag team was able to reinvent AC in 4 years. Capcom's RE teams are working pretty fast too. Ubisoft and EA studios like DICE can be counted upon to release a new game every 2-3 years.

It's disappointing to see all these amazing studios just struggle this gen. especially after shipping their first games so early this gen. i wonder if its because they spend too much time prototyping. we know GG went back and forth between horizon and their steampunk game for two years before finally settling on horizon. we know how the andromeda team wasted 3.5 years on prototypes of a seemless solar system before throwing all that away. we know how WB Montreal has rebooted like three different games they were working on (Son of Batman, Suicide Squad and another game i cant recall right now) Which is so disappointing because Arkham Origins had a great story.

I say take 3 years and just make the goddamn game. Just put it out there and then take 2 more years to make a uncharted 2 like sequel. this compulsion to make the greatest game of all time on the first try is probably whats causing these massive dev cycles.

The only other WB IP I could see Rocksteady utilizing is The Matrix. It fits the Arkham combat system well and their design.

But, there ain't no way in hell theyre working on anything but Superman/Justice League.

WB doesn't let anyone make new IP's anymore, and why should they? They got tons of great IP just sitting waiting for someone to use.

Rocksteady already proved themselves to be the king of superhero games. WB ain't letting them make anything else. DC is an absolute goldmine. Any other developer would be lucky to be able to pick and choose which superheroes they want to make.

These guys are making Superman.

No. I want to see them continue making DC games if they make anymore super hero games. I would like to see a friendly rivalry between them and insomniac where they are constantly trying to one up another. We all win that way imo

Can't wait to see what they are making .

i don't think they own the rights (i believe Viacom do?), but WB have dabbled in the TMNT IP before. namely, the TMNT CGi movie, and the turtles appearing in injustice 2. the hopeful side of me sees this slightly left-field inclusion in injustice as a clue as to what rocksteady are working on...also...rocksteady! hello! lol.

it's a pretty persistent rumor at this point, and i'm sure it's all just wishful thinking on my part, but i'd die happy if it happened.

Unfortunately, the above statement may be easier said than done. Take the Sony Santa Monica team for example; they took 5 years to develop God of War. From my understanding, the bulk of that development time was spent building the underlying technology from scratch. A sequel for example shouldn't take another 5 years (I expect 3 years or so). In regards to Naughty Dog, while they have released 3 games in 5 years, one of those was a remaster, while the other was a shorter 7 hour game. Also, Rocksteady apparently had half their team working on Arkham VR, which came out in late 2016.

Development/Production times have been on the rise ever since the beginning of this console gen. Unfortunately, I don't see it decreasing anytime soon, especially with the ever increasing demands for larger worlds and increased graphical fidelity.

I was thinking Ghost Rider.
They already made vehicules gameplay with the batmobile so the bike won't be an issue.
I could totally see a Robbie Reyes Ghost Rider game with the Batmobile gameplay.

Which is a weird thing to say because I always felt Reyes was the worst interpretation of GR, then Agents of Shield not only made him rad but made it the best season they've ever done.
