nVidia performance per dollar compared, RTX vs GTX 10 series (data from Videocardz and nVidia's reviewer's guide)

zWvHzua.jpg
Performance / $ is not a good metric to use, as we typically see roughly a 33% improvement each generation.
When you take that into account, it makes this generation 40% worse, not 20% worse.

MSI Gaming Trio 2080 and 2080TI showcased here:

MSI just defeated the EVGA ultra in terms of size it seems. So huge, wow. Includes a support bracket.

The 2080 TI is 8 + 8 + 6 pin connection too, insane.

I've yet to have my i5-4690k bottleneck a game...isn't the chance of that happening going to go down by jumping from 1080 to 1440, even if I am going from 60 to 144 FPS? It's OC'd at 4.4 if that makes any difference.

Your chance goes up as your target FPS goes up. If your 1080p monitor was only capable of 60 fps you probably weren't going to hit a CPU bottleneck. Jumping up to a 144Hz, if that is what you are targeting at 1440p, stands a higher chance of hitting a bottleneck regardless of resolution.

What GPU do you have now? If you have a 980Ti or faster I can bet my ass your CPU has bottlenecked you at 1080p. But you are correct the chances go down at 1440p. A 2080ti will still be bottlenecked at 1440p in many cases by your CPU

It's game by game. You are better off getting a new gpu and if you are still struggling then get a new cpu/motherboard/ram. But getting a better GPU will not hurt at all. I am running a 2600k and am mostly gpu bound. Some games are very CPU intensive though and not as bad gpu side.

I hadn't considred the 100+ FPS bottlenecking the CPU. I was going to replace that too, but wanted to wait for Cannonlake to do so. Now you guys have me reconsidering 4k@60.

I've been on 1440p/144 for a couple years now, I'd never consider downgrading to a 4k/60 display. Maybe if it was for productivity, media or content creation, but definitely not gaming.

If you're playing on a desktop monitor, I'd go 1440/144hz all day over 4K. You'll always be able to hook it up to a 4K TV or something if you want to. If you get a g-sync monitor, your stuff will look amazing even if it 'only' runs at 70 or 80 fps until you get a CPU upgrade

Thanks for all the inputs, dudes.I'm still leaning on a 2080ti with the 1440 monitor, but man this mix of compromises is killing me.

Msi Gaming x trio 2018 Ti has two 8pins and a 6pin? holy crap! I guess if you want to go for a nutty OC... seems overkill though..?

If you want this card, you should measure the physical dimension requirement in your case. This thing is almost 13 inches long and likely to protrude into where your hard drive cage would be.

1440p 144hz gsync over 4k 60 imo

I have a 4k hdr monitor and a 1080p gsync one, wish I went with 1440p
To counter this and make your decision harder... :)

1440p 100Hz+ Ultrawide Gsync (I use a Z35P)
Use a 4k Television for 4k60 HDR pretties.

Or wait for the eventual release of that 1440p 200Hz Ultrawide Gsync with HDR which is sure to break bank accounts the world over.

I'll not be upgrading monitors until 4k HDR 144hz G-SYNC monitors don't cost more than the 2080ti

How well would a Ryzen 2700X pair with a 2080? I'm thinking of upgrading my CPU as well based on the responses I got here.

I have a 2700x and Titan X Pascal SLI. If you're playing at 4K it will be fine. At a lower resolution you will be leaving frames on the table by not going with an Intel chip. AMD will likely have the fastest CPU next year with the Ryzen 3000 series so either wait for then or upgrade now to Intel if you're gaming below 4k.

Nvidia took the money for my 2080 preorder a few hours ago.
So excited, at least on paper as there are literally zero RT games out there.
Well...

Two non bottlenecking cents from someone who went to 2160p with a 980ti. The TV does 1080/120. 2160/60 is lush but xxxx/120 is a revelation. If I wasn't couch gaming (and using as much for movies as games on one set) I would be all over a 1440/144 monitor. Like I said no help for your CPU concern but imo high frame rate gaming is something else.

Speaking of Tomb Raider, I think it's kinda weird that it's not bundled with the cards since it's the perfect game to make use of all the horsepower and RTX. Two years ago I got GoW4 bundled with my 1070 purchase through the Nvidia site.

Damnit the msi trio 2080ti is 327mm long... Just too long for the fractal define r5. Hopefully i can shift my hard drive cages enough out of the way.

I wouldn't be surprised if they started bundles closer to the holidays.

From everything ive seen on youtube like Gamers Nexus, digital foundry, jayztwocents and others im going to take a guess and say the rtx 2080ti will have the performance people are looking for if they have the money to fork out for it. 40% difference out of the box, improved overclocking headroom, more power delivery to the cards over pascal cards, im going to guess theres another 15-20% performance available.

Pascal offered 50-70% improvement over Maxwell, so this is getting into the ballpark now, its just that it costs way more because Nvidia said why not?

I could be very wrong, and Nvidia are just spinning a good narrative about overclocking but at the same time it doesnt make sense for Nvidia to hold back on all the power available. A little perhaps (to save for the next gen) but not a significant amount.

Don't most power supplys come with an 8 and 6+2, on one chain, and at least two sets of those?

Nah, newer basic ones come with 2 8 pin.

But my Seasonic Gold semi modular 550W from just 3 years ago, comes with just the one 8 pin and either I misplaced the other cable (i have all the other cables) or it didn't come with one.

3 cables is insane!
