iPhone XS / XS Max pre-order thread - starts September 14, ships September 21

Even then it still an outrageous amount!
I've gone from paying around £38 pound 4 years ago with iPhone 6 to now being asked to pay £73 a month with EE for a 64gb XS Max.
How is nearly a 50% increase justifiable? What annoys me the most is apples 1 to 1 dollar to pound convertion.

I just prefer to take the hit immediately and be done with it. Plus the phone is now 100% mine and I don't have to worry about my carrier at all.
Outright. I'm on a killer plan (which are incredibly rare in Canada), so I can't afford to be forced to switch to a definitely worse plan in order to get this on contract. Plus, the resell values are so good that I always sell my old iphone for like 50-60% of the cost of the new one, so it really doesn't cost me too much in the end.

Except my 6s will be the kids' iPod touch.
Yeah, the more I see of the Gold in videos the more I like it, but I don't think I'll have any complaints with my Space Grey.
Probably going to end up pre-ordering the 512gb Xs today, will be used as my personal phone / daily driver.
I arranged to have my packages held at the UPS shipping facility so I can pick them up that morning instead of waiting for delivery (or rather, missing my delivery because I'll be at work).

There are a few browsers that let you do split screen. I have a free one called Split that's pretty barebones (doesn't let you adjust the size of the split screen, crashes on my iPad when I press the bookmark button).
There's one called Split Screen Multitasking View that's $10, but seems more fully featured (adjustable split screen size, etc).
I mean, you don't have to actually use the cellular feature... (unless you mean bc you wish you could get a cheaper one, but like don't buy the stainless steel one if price is a concern to you lol...)
I like to buy media and load my own, basically.
Anyway I ordered the white one, it says shipping on 10/10/2018, hopefully it'll be here a little sooner lol
Anybody want to guess if iPhone XS ships on iOS12? Given GM was not very long ago, I'm wondering if it's a better idea not to upgrade given that to port over your data to the new phone, the new phone has to be upgraded to iOS12 first (not exactly a fast process if you're in an Apple Store on launch day)
Good to know. I asked because last year, they did ship iPhone X with a less-than-latest version of iOS11. If you upgraded your existing phone that week and went into the store to do the upgrade, you were stuck waiting on the iOS update because the X operating system wasn't a high enough version to take the data. (Admittedly though iPhone X shipped way after iOS11 so I think they were at around 11.0.3 by the time of the hardware release)
Yeah, they'll sometimes ship a product a minor release behind, but never a new product on an old major release. iOS 11 straight up doesn't have software support for the new phones.
Does that mean I'll have to update my iPhone 6 to the latest iOS before attempting to transfer over all my stuff? I've been running into annoying errors when trying to update and kinda gave up even trying a couple months ago.
it's almost like The Verge is actively trying to make those phones look as bad as possible with those horrid backgrounds.
I kind of like it! I don't use anything other than a solid colour background though.
Also he's complaining about the iPhone X accidental screenshot thing but that was fixed in iOS 12 wasn't it? Guess it was filmed earlier lol.
Also Nilay really doesn't like iPhones and his reviews of them are always feel like he's doing it out of obligation but his heart isn't into it.

I thought this review was perfect and fair. I'll have to investigate the fact about the XS Max not showing you any more information. I hope they didn't just scale up UI elements, but I doubt it, that's never been their MO with the plus models.

Let me guess 'yeah, yeah, *rolls yes*, this is boring, i guess I'm reviewing this, I guess it's a newer faster apple product, the usual story, blah blah, and if you want it t's going to be great for you'. The whole verge staff is like that now.

To be fair you an only be so excited in an S refresh, especially if there's nothing mind blowing going on. Interested in seeing more camera samples though.

Only missing a knock on them for getting rid of the headphone jack. Otherwise spot on.
I'm wondering this too. My backup I will use to transfer my data will not have the latest firmware. Hoping that It will still transfer.
He's not wrong. And I am pretty sure he is an iPhone user. Best review I have seen so far.
Only thing I'm worried about is battery life on the xs.
I feel bad because I actually watched the video at lunch there and it is a solid review!

I know nothing about the guy but halfway through the video, I had the same feeling. I've heard elsewhere that the Pixel 2 still beats these new ones camera wise, so he seems spot on with that. The differences aren't enough for me to care, though.
They called the camera "very good but not great" and portrait mode as hit and miss. Hmmm.
also Nilay doesn't like iPhones? News to me. There's a video at the conference this year of him gushing over the Xr.
I thoroughly enjoyed that review. Gave me a lot of good positives with some negatives, which makes it look like a solid phone.
Wait does the Max actually just oversize everything and not actually fit more on the screen? Or is he using that zoomed display mode that they have on Plus models? I didn't get a bigger screen so that stuff would be bigger; I want to see more information at once. The app icons look bigger on the XS in that verge video.
