These game openings:

Final Fantasy VI
Resident Evil (original)
Final Fantasy VII
Half Life
Half Life 2
Bioshock
Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid 2
The Last of Us

I could keep going so I'm just going to stop.

The Last of Us has to win this based on the way it gets you so emotionally attached to a character we've known for about 45 seconds.

Also BOTW in terms of the feeling of being entirely lost due to the scale of the map when you first come out of the cave...

I'll be cheating just a bit... at least if you don't consider the Virtuous Mission to be the intro to MGS3

And you are also able to interact during the opening pressing buttons.

All Kingdom Hearts games seriously the openigs scenes + the themes. Yeah it's insane brings tears to my eyes....

The KH3 one is gonna be insane with that new theme song damn..... I bet theyll do a cgi opening that shows all events so far + new stuff. It's gonna make me bawl like crazy.

Also KH2 roxas and metal gear solid 2.

Edit: MGSV gets lots of flack but the opening is insane.

I'm so bad at deciding what my favorite is because I always think, "but that one was cool too"

I'll go with the First Gran Turismo game because it's a different genre to the ones in the topic.
I didn't even like the first Gran Turismo game but the opening was something else lol.

The music helps a lot and is one of my favorite remixes. I'm going to be listening to the manic street preachers all day now lol

I loved the Wild Arms 3 intro and the way it gradually unlocked further scenes and vocals the further you progressed in the game. I wish more games did something like that with their intro.

The first two Mass Effects are both up there with the all-time greats, for different reasons.

2 is probably my favourite, but they're both fantastic.

It's a shame 2's suffers from Destiny-syndrome where the developers sort of kneejerked and made it dramatic only via sensationalism and less with plot, but it is a visually and cinematically stunning way to re-enter the series after playing the first game and definitely emotionally riveting. The first game's opening to the title-reveal is an all-time classic for me. "Mass Effect" sounds like it's just a name they picked cuz it would sound cool, so it takes you by suprise almost when you're reading the text-crawl and the brilliant sci-fi concept that is the mass-effect, of manipulating the mass (weight) of objects thus enabling a kind of intersolar faster than light traveling, is laid bare for you.

I'm laying it in thick because I want BioWare guys to read it and remember what the hell their title meant and what the focus of the games should continue to be >:P

Ashamed to say I've never actually played any Tales games whatsoever, but I first saw this intro on a Gamecube demo disc and I've loved it ever since.

Other favourites include:
Undertale
Ocarina of Time
Sonic Unleashed
Curse of Monkey Island
Bayonetta 2
(and more)

For me, any game that lets you start actually playing straight away - maybe it's my fault as I have a short enough window of time in which to play games as it is - but spending the opening hour watching cutscenes and playing short 'walk forward' sections drives me insane - for that reason I was very impressed with Spider-Man as you're swinging through the city about 60 seconds after pressing start.

A truly great video game opening is an opening that's memorable and great despite the game following it being complete shit.

This is why Sonic Unleashed's opening will always be top tier for me.

here's my favourite. haunting. it gave me chills as a child and still does

the first 20 seconds are sublime. the silence, eeriness. it's such a good thematic representation of that game. and then, classic zelda kicks back in - the music, the town, the characters! except, at the end... there's a hideous aggressive musical cue cutting through it, as it ends on that iconic shot. it's perfect

Thought the game went downhill very quickly and ended up thoroughly disappointed but I found the opening of the new God of War pretty powerful.
