Marvel's Spider-Man has been doing very well in Japan in its first week, or better, its first weekend since it launched on a Friday. The game has sold enough of its initial shipment to be affected by shortages at brick and mortar stores as reported by Media Create

The game is in its second weekend, and we decided to check out the situation with our own eyes. Across Saturday and Sunday, we visited every video game store we knew about in Akihabara, Tokyo, to see if we could find any new copies of the game.

The result is that every store we visited did not have a single new copy of the game. We didn't have any luck at all both on Saturday and Sunday. We checked with the store clerks and they confirmed what we saw on the shelves.

One thing is for sure: Insomniac Games' new title appears to have found purchase on the Japanese market, even thanks to the local popularity of the character. While it's no Monster Hunter World, its success is certainly remarkable for a western game.

This game is selling pretty frakking well in every major market, it seems. Congrats to Insomniac for making something the fans really seem to dig.

Akihabara isn't really THE place to look for new video games, but whatever.

That said, logically speaking, 3% stock remaining while waiting for more shipments will generally have that outcome, yes.

I might be recalling wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's been discussed in the MediaCreate thread how Akihabara really isn't a great place to search for new retail games since most people go there to check first, so it's more likely to go out of stock compared to everywhere else.

Should have looked a little harder. the biggest game store in Tokyo, Yodobashi-akiba, currently has it listed as in-stock on its website, and a quick phone call with some very bad English confirms they're on the store shelves.

I'm at work 2 hours early and have nothing better to do.

LMAO. I mean, it's not surprising that specific website wants to hype up Spider-Man some more, but that's just lazy, lol. Inb4 Prey must be selling like crazy because my local GameStops don't have it on their shelf.

can I become a news editor there if I go to my local video game store and make a listing of their stock ?

It's nice to see the stereotype of Western games being shi* dissipating in the Japanese gaming space.

It is silly. Do foodie bloggers post this kind of shite when there's no tofu or avocados in Tesco/Walmart/insert your own local supermarket.

To be fair, isn't Yodobashi mostly an electronics department store and not a game store?

But yeah, without it you're mostly looking at three Trader stores in terms of new games. All the rest mostly do pre-owned games (Super Potato, Mandarake, Book-Off etc).

Digital copies exist for a reason even if i had slow internet the time you spent looking for a physical copy could have been spent downloading it.

Consumer behavior is different in that market. I remember reading somewhere a number of videogamers over there prefer physical over digital if given a choice. Perhaps I'm wrong about that though.

Imagine going to Japan and the first thing you write an article of is stock availability of a western game.

Free advice: if you see something about Japan and it's in English, there's about a 60% chance of it being flat out wrong or completely made up.
