It's bumming me out in a year with Spike Lee, Steve McQueen, Barry Jenkins, Boots Ridley, and Ryan Coogler (just to list a few) addressing race in unique, provocative, and bold ways expressing their directorial voices, the Farrelly Brothers are going to get more Oscar buzz than any of their movies.

If past years have taught us anything it's that it's useless to see movies throughout the year to get a jump on nominations. 90% of the movies nominated won't even have been released in your city when they're announced. The favorites will all be Oscar bait movies releasing just before Christmas.

Exactly what I asked for when the news of the Academy's dumb popular film baiting broke. They need to change up the format and distribution so it's no longer tied to 5 hr staid TV broadcasts. Make it available, make it a worldwide thing, make it consumable in different ways, shareable and modern in its marketing, and then the content itself can actually stay largely as it is, I think there's still an attractive quality to a classy, old-fashioned movie award presentation as long as you get it out to people in the way they expect to get content these days.

Most people I know these days just watch it through social media, so this kinda makes sense.

But ever since they expanded the amount of nominees to 6-10, the Oscars have had major growing pains that have led to awful decisions. They need to get their shit together - have a host that focuses more on charisma than corny comedy (think more Hugh Jackman). Less tacky skits.

That's about when I expected it to be.

It's really late in the game to debut - we don't know when it's premiering. It's missed a lot of film festivals.
I thought it'd close AFI a la "The Big Short", but no.

MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS to close AFI 2018.

This will the the world premiere of the film as well. AFI is one of the last, if not the last, major film festival of the year. So, if "Vice" misses AFI, either "Vice" is not good or it'll be a last minute appearance at the fest.

Just got out of seeing Widows at LFF. It's good but not as good as 12 Years, I think it suffers from having too many important characters when all of McQueens previous works focused on a singular individual. Still easily his most "enjoyable" film and a couple of really great scenes.

Annapurna is in a bit of trouble. It dropped the Roger Ailes biopic as well as another film for no discernible reason.

If it wasn't already obvious, Disney's confirmed it - they are pushing Black Panther for Best Picture...

Sure why not? If it takes any momentum away from Green Book I'll be glad.

I just got out of Green Book, it's super Oscar baity but for that it's pretty good. Mortensen and Ali are both great, I wouldn't be bothered if it gets nominated but I'm sure there will be another film I'll want to see win.

Not sure why I've seen so much dislike for it on era

Saw The Wife because of all the Best Actress hype for Glenn Close...

Not seeing that in her performance, sorry. Movie wasn't much good either.

Finally caught a couple of contenders

A star is born was amazing - great performances, goosebumps-inducing musical scenes, and a hell of a tragedy.

First man was also good. It is way more a movie about repressed emotions resulting in grief being unable to be expressed than anything else. It might actually be too subtle for the academy in some places. Which is a shame, because it's fantastic.

The default best actor winner formula really has become "wear a lot of makeup and be a historical figure" huh

Outside a star is born and black panther, most of America and people at the Oscars will not have seen most of those best picture movies. Hell Jimmy Kimmel made a joke that I bet none of you people have seen half these movies either. Maybe thats the issue. Movies 70% of people dont care about keep getting nominated and winning so its become the Movie Snob Award

Maybe they should? Don't know why the best in film for a given year needs to reflect box office results.

The Academy also can't be accused much of being snobs, due to the fact that you're not going to see them nominate anything that could be truly snobbish. Even their "out there" picks are frequently nowhere near what any would consider art house.

Why the highest grossing and most popular movies in the country should receive even more recognition is beyond my explanation. Let the Academy members pick their favorites for an audience......don't let the audience pick favorites for Academy members.

well if the movies 70% of people see aren't nominated for the awards that matter why do they think that the ratings are dropping beside less people have cable? You can't be forcing people to watch the Oscars if they don't give a shit about the movies being nominated

A while back FilmCritHulk made an article saying it becomes a lot easier to predict the Oscars if you replace "Best" in each category with "Most".

IE: Best Actor = most acting

In true American fashion, subtlety is overshadowed by flamboyantly showing how much dedication you have to acting.

The kind of movies that some think will improve the ratings of the show are a bandage at best, and one in where the novelty wears off, we're right back to where we are now. Black Panther getting a BP nom might do something for the next show's ratings, but it's not going to lead to sustainable growth. Awards shows don't mean much to the general public these days, and there's nothing anyone can do about that beyond making it more accessible for folks that don't have a cable box. That won't change much, either, but it at least puts the show in this decade.

I think having some less successful films can be a good thing. My friends only saw moonlight and the shape of water because they won best picture. Exposing more good movies is only a good thing.

The real problem is the mediocre films like Darkest Hour that aren't good movies, but tick enough boxes to get in anyway.

Toni Colette won best Actress there!

I hope she can eke in a nomination.

On another note - in between First Man, Widows, and especially Green Book a lot of Oscars contenders are flopping at the box office. Wonder if this will destroy any of their chances.

PGAs were tonight, and there's really only 3 awards they give out that are noteworthy in terms of Oscar voting.

Best documentary went to Won't You Be My Neighbor

Best Animated Feature: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Best Picture: Green Book

Buckle up, ladies and gents, we're in for a ride.
