Ok if this ISNT a typo - someone explain how CoroCoro is the ONLY one with that info and, not only that, decided to make it the only new info in an article recapping the Smash Direct.

I think there are more stages anyway, but not because of this.
Agree, 108-109 makes too much sense but CoroCoro didn't know about it.

All of this is besides the point. Why choose Jigglypuff as an extra character? Why not MetaKnight? Why not Falcondorf? Hell why not Falco?

The reason they chose Jigglypuff is due to marketing and the popularity of the anime and Pokemon in general. Puff being close to Kirby's form is another convenience from a development stand point, but it can't be the reason she was included in the game when there's so many other popular clones who could have been put in.
True enough. Puff was also pretty popular at the time. Capitalize on the Pokémon Boom.

Yeah, that's what I keep saying. Very interchangeable with the other lead heroes too, so we could have something like this:

dragon_quest_8_player_smash_v2__by_diegichigo-dbounyb.jpg

Not mine, just a cool fan concept I found

But maybe swap out the VI and XI hero for Female Erdrick and Sofia (IV Heroine)

Ohhh I'd really love this idea. Name the character Dragon Warrior and have the whole series represented, except have some of them be the female variants that have really cool designs.

Would be an awesome way to pay homage to the whole series and all its history.

because Kirby doesn't use a sword

because Captain Falcon wasn't even a fully original character

because Pokemon is a hundred times more popular than Star Fox

That proves my point? Jigglypuff as a character wasn't better liked than Falco at the time and in terms of video game characters a complete non entity. She is basically the 1999 version of Goku.

I honestly feel like people are just arguing for the sake of it now, it's just so obvious that Sakurai will put in characters that aren't iconic and will sometimes favour those who are currently trendy. There's multiple examples of it.

I don;t think the cat hate will be anywhere near Corrin. Now if they announce a character from Three Houses before the game is released worldwide, that will probably manage to eclipse the Corrin hate.

I'm getting a bit ahead of myself, but there are so many "I hope we get a good character to make up for crappy Incineroar" posts

A fun character with a unique mechanic that people arbitrarily whine about non stop for years for no reason other than the fact their fav didn't make it in?

Yes, this exactly

too late, you're here forever!

Wake me up inside
Wake me up inside
Call my name and save me from the dark
Bid my blood to run
Before I come undone
Save me from the nothing I've become

Corrin isn't even the old Corrin. Bayonetta quickly overtook them as the most hated character in the game.

I feel like people only hate Bayo because she was busted. Before that she was pretty well-liked, while Corrin was mostly hated from the start.

that's exactly what I've been saying, though? they wanted a second Pokemon character, and she was picked over much much more popular options because the ability to build her off of Kirby's base meant she was much much easier to implement

Enough about characters, let's guess the 5 remaining stages!

I think:
  1. Minecraft stage
  2. Arms stage (Arena)
  3. Snipperclips stage
  4. Pokemon Sun/Moon stage
  5. Yoshi's Crafted World stage
EDIT:

or:
  1. SSB64's intro table
  2. Final Destination SSB64
  3. Final Destination SSBM
  4. Final Destination SSBB
  5. Final Destination SSB4

The whole DQ character is hilarious. It's hilarious to compare a third party character to Nintendo's characters.

The third party characters are icons of the industry. Nintendo can put Corrin, ARMS or whoever big recent character of theirs.

A DQ character would most likely be Slime with his Knight + Slime combination.

Jigglypuff is an iconic pokemon though.

Sakurai does generally favor protagonists though. The slime would be closer to representation of their own sub-series, not DQ proper. If he were just adding marketed mascots we'd already have a Waddle Dee as a playable character in Smash.

Still, due to how tightly Square holds rights, I doubt we'll see anything from DQ.

This is like saying ChocoMog was more likely than Cloud.

Agreed. So if we are analysing Sakurai's thought process, then he included her not based on convenience or time constraints (because there were other options for convenience), but on marketing and current trends. Jigglypuff has no right to be in Smash, but there she is.

And all this is just basically trying to prove a small observation that Sakurai will at times include a character for marketing purposes over 'importance' or 'popularity', along with many other examples in the smash roster. I believe there's a chance he may go with the new Dragon Quest character, just because there's no standout candidate like Cloud.

The issue with Slime is that it's pretty much a nothing. Like its existence is to be as nothing as possible. Makes a good mascot but not a good fighter.

I can see a Slime Assist Trophy being a thing, maybe even combining with other slimes to make a King Slime or a Gem Slime.

The Slime is a fun mascot.

Absolutely not what I'd want to see as a playable character. It wouldn't represent what players experience in the games at all.

A DQ rep should be one of the heroes.

Oh, I would pass out from excitement if something similar would happen.

If I'm correct, this is from a thread on Smashboards where a user was supporting Loto or DQ1 Hero for Smash, they also made a very interesting moveset and gave some good arguments why Dragon Quest should be in Smash.
I don't have a link sadly (I'll search for it!), but I remember it being around a year ago.

okay, but do you really think Jigglypuff would've made it in if she wasn't made out of Kirby parts

because the entire point here is: she wouldn't have

You could argur that Pikachu isn't the main character in Pokemon

Discussion prior to Smash 4 regarding FF always centered around Chocobos/Moogles because people couldn't decide on one protagonist, as much as Cloud was the most popular. This is the exact same discussion as back then.
True. Every time Cloud (or Lightning, I think those two were the most common ones) was mentioned, there was always arguments about how they wouldn't use one protagonist to represent the series, and that Chocobo/Moogle/Black Mage were the most likely rep.

If I was there I'd say the same thing that Cloud is the icon that represents FF.

DQ isn't so easy and same with Atlus. Nobody talks about Atlus because they don't really have a character that's iconic. DQ is incredibly popular so people are trying to scramble for some Eldrick? character.

The fact that you think Erdrick is just some character tells me you have not played any of the NES games.

Does he? *checks* Yeah, I guess he does. I mean, I remember hearing hackers found that the actual "limit" seems to be well over 100 but I thought everyone in the game had 8. I guess a DQ rep could be a special case and have more than 8 then.
Though I don't see Sakurai giving more than 8 for any other character. The thing with the heroes is, they're not as simple as a different costume. It's more like the Koopalings.
We didn't get 16 Robin/Corrin/Olimar/Alph etc. For Mac, I don't get why he got 16, but it certainly seems like an exception to his rule.
That's why I think that if Hero ever gets in Smash, we'll see 8 at most. I personally think it would be any hero, except the avatar ones (from IX and X) and the original 2.

Edit: Quote fail

I honestly don't get that though, Moogle or Chocobo just doesn't seem like doing the series justice, as it's more like a mascot. I guess they pick whatever is (one of) the most popular games in the series and put that main character in Smash. FFVII made JRPG's kinda mainstream back then. For Dragon Quest you could see Dragon Quest III as the same thing. That game was so huge (not talking sales though) and its main character is very well known. Loto has been referenced in Zelda 2 for example (his grave was in Zelda 2 to be precise).

I mean Ridley is probably getting 16 too.

I was just thinking what to do if Sakurai went all out and wanted to make every hero represented. I noticed Little Mac seems to have 8 colors again according to the Smash Wiki. Maybe Sakurai can still make an exception here. But anyway what I got.

DQ1 Armored
DQ1 Unarmored
DQ2 Midenhall
DQ3 Erdrick Male
DQ3 Erdrick Female
DQ4 Solo (Male Hero)
DQ4 Sofia (Female Hero)
DQ5 Madason
DQ6 Hero
DQ7 Hero
DQ8 Hero
DQ9 Celestrian Male
DQ9 Celestrian Female
DQ10 Hero
DQ11 Luminary

That's 15 right there. One short of what Little Mac had in 4
DQ is incredibly popular so people are trying to scramble for some Eldrick? character.

"Scramble"?

tenor.gif

EDIT: I still think if Sakurai is limited he'll probably stick to the classic Nintendo releases:

DQ1 Armored
DQ1 Unarmored
DQ2 Midenhall
DQ3 Erdrick Male
DQ3 Erdrick Female
DQ4 Solo (Male Hero)
DQ4 Sofia (Female Hero)
DQ5 Madason

Take out Unarmored hero and stick VI's hero in and you have all the classic heroes before the series jumped to Playstation with VII and VIII.

The Erdrick Armor design (different from the default one, but very famous and referenced in multiple games) would complete that list.

Discussion around Cloud for Smash was laughed off cause his game never appeared on a Nintendo system.
