Only God Forgives

I thought it was a pretty boring film, but the visuals are top notch.

Mentioned above but Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole is a pretty mediocre movie that has an amazing cinematography.

I'm surprised with all of the hot takes in this thread that Avatar hasn't come up. That movie was pretty mediocre as a film but the cinematography and visuals made it into an experience.

I don't think Avatar is interesting visually. It's obviously well shot in terms of camera movement and blocking though.

The House of Flying Daggers.
I enjoyed watching the film. If there's a Zhang Yimou film that's fits this more, it'll be curse of the golden flower.

Mary and the witches flower and Tales of Earthsea have some beautiful animation but really uninteresting to watch.

Australia comes to mind. Some pretty great shots in a really mediocre film.

This is Zach Snyder the thread.

Also Skyfall, a shitty movie that's extremely gorgeous at the same time.

Children Of Men is only great because of the cinematography. I know its a well liked film but when people say they like it its always for those standout long shots. it's never for the story or the characters. Its the cinematography that makes the film what it is

Scorsese's Bringing out the Dead has MASTERFUL cinematography, Robert Richardson was the Cinematographer and Thelma Schoonmaker was the film editor.

This thread is great. I'm gonna waste my time and see Razorback (1984) today, and see if I can find that Vanilla Ice movie.

I liked how Hardware (1990) looked. A post-apocalyptic movie about a killer robot and an artist. The movie is really boring but the mood is great and so are some of the shots. The matte paintings are ace too.

I don't have access to the movie so I had to dig through Google Images. This is the best I could scrounge up.

you kinda need to have both

good cinematography is not just being gorgeous to look at, it also means to frame stuff in a way that enhances the script and the message behind it, or the kind of feelings you are trying to make the audience feel

when you have a mix of both a good script and good cinematography, that's when great movies are made..otherwise, like hitchcock said, you are just making "photographs of people talking"

I wish people didn't use this thread as a childish way to get attention with controversial hot takes. It just makes you look stupid.

It's been mentioned a few times already, but The Fall is a good pick. I actually think it's a good movie, but it's hardly great by anyones standards. It's absolutely beautiful though.

I quite like Hardware. It's not great, but I've actually rewatched it more times than many films I regard as true masterpieces. The visuals are probably a big reason why. It's a weird little movie.

There are a lot of horror movies that come to mind.

I don't have any screens atm but Dead Silence did some good looking stuff on a shoe string budget. The movie is mediocre.
