Is there an ability, spell or a quick way to get pep?

need it for side quests.
For the first annoying sidequest that requires Wild Side, just continue the story a little bit until you have 5 characters. Then whenever one of the 3 enters pep, switch them out of the party, this will freeze their pep skill duration until you switch them back in. This way you only need to sync the other 2 members, finish your fight, engage the right enemy, swap in the 3rd guy and do the pep and finish the quest. It becomes less annoying later, and then more annoying when they start requiring you kill the monster with the actual pep skill that does a third of the damage of a normal attack.

Bought a new one already it's coming in today :)

The spare monitor I have is a old low res monitor, I tried to play on it but nope it just made me sad to look at it that way. Gave me an excuse to play through the megaman collection though haha.

Just buy an OLED TV. Your eyes will thank me later.
But your wallet sure won't.

So I confirmed my suspicions.

I just finished with the events returning to Heliodor and returned back to the Last Bastion / Cobblestone. Yep the second part of the game really, really reminds me of World of Ruin segment of FF6 in the sense you are going back to all the old locations and reuniting with your companions but the world is not quite the same as it was before. It is an interesting parallel and I wonder if someone will eventually do a comparison between the FF6 WoR and DQXI World of Light / World of Darkness.

Kinda shocked how good the voice acting. Above par dub for square imo
You don't think that it's painfully slow? It's almost like they slow it down for children to process. One of my biggest gripes with the game and I find myself just speed reading past all dialogue. Only met Erik so far but man that voice just does not match. Also the protagonist being mute is frustrating in 2018 as well. Think the audio department overall in this game is sorely lacking. Shame because the visuals are such a treat.

The game is the best DQ when it is being open and non-linear with lots of gameplay (at least on Draconian). But when it hits long story parts, or parts without a full party, etc., it just blows. I have a love/hate relationship with the game, about forty hours in. The story is nowhere near good enough to justify the shear volume of unskippable scenes that gets dumped on the players at times.

Unskippable cutscenes are enough for me to not bother recommending the game to friends.

Square-Enix has been pretty good in the last decade. PS2 was hit-or-miss, but since then I've generally liked all of their major voiced projects.

For those of you who have finished it, or at least played a good chunk, what's your overall impression of the story? Engaging enough?

The story picks up in the second half. It's nothing spectacular, but there are a few twists along with some interesting world-building and character moments. I'd say it's engaging enough overall.

Holy moly I just about managed to make it out of the Kingsbarrow alive on Draconian Quest. The boss was extremely hard but I managed to beat it on my first attempt thanks to a bit of luck. I'm having to use everything at my disposal to beat hard enemies/bosses. Really glad I started on Draconian Quest (only enabled harder enemies).

So how much % I'm in the main story now?

Don't open the spoiler unless you have finished the game:

The World Tree has Fallen and now the hero is a fish.

Almost 39hours of playtime now.

The voice acting is good, but I dunno, I'm very tempted to turn it off after a few hours, because their line delivery is soooo slow, and I rather get no dialogue than the "Well, now...anyway...and off we..." half-sentences I get as I skip through the text boxes.

I just enlisted Sylvando. How much more of this game is there? Just curious.

Playing a bit more. Veronica and Serena joined the party. They look adorable and very charismatic, especially Veronica due to the story showing more of her personality than Serena's until now.

Do you guys recommend learning whip/spear skills with them?

You've barely started.

They're better as mages, so I wouldn't really recommend it. Veronica's Vim tree is good, and I like Wands for Serena.

Anyone have tips for the last trial boss? Dude is kicking my ass and I'm level 75

I beat him around 70. I believe my party was the Hero, Erik, Sylvando, and Rab. Erik was the main damage-dealer with Divide + Victimiser/Fatal Flash, and I think I used the Hero's Gigagash to deal with the adds. Rab and Sylvando did the typical healing/buffs/debuffs. Dark resistance should help for this fight as well. I ended up clearing it with 44 moves.

I have two markers on my world map, one that I assume moves the story on and another that I assume is a cutscene. I'm trying to get to the one that I assume is a cutscene but I can't find it. The nearest marker appears to be the Dundrasil Campsite but I can't for the life of me find it. Any help?

You have to go all the way into the Ruins of Dundrasil.
