There is a big difference between a young ignorant dude from the hood saying it to his likely limited audience compared to a +40year old Megastar with fans all over the world.

Imagine if Drake, Kendrick or Cole would start using that word in their lyrics ...Em should know better.

The fact that makes it worse is that he was addressing a actual person with it...that's quite rare these days.

Cole did use it in his lyrics.

There is no overt homophobia present in deep house, progressive trance or minimal techno. As an example of 3 genres. House music started in the gay clubs. Its entire existence centres around inclusivity.

Okay that's three good example (The origins I'll have to check) and I'll give you that. I'm pretty sure jazz and soul is also pretty safe.

In the end, what I'm trying to say is "Don't judge something as a monolith when it isn't". Case by case studies is fair, but there's not rule about homophobia being acceptable in Hip Hop.

Rap is bad these days. Between people saying slurs and all the songs about bustin nuts on bitches, the genre is turning trash. I'm sure there are some good songs without that stuff though.

now rappers aren't allowed to swear or use slurs? not defending it but c'mon...rappers say all sorts of shit that is offensive. if they're homophobic then they're racist too.

where's the hate at other rappers who use the same words or just as offensive ones? nah didn't think so.

Nah man, the f-slur has no place in anyone's music. It's homophobic my dude. There's no excuse.

edit - the apologists in here suck. I wish I could say what I really thought without catching a ban here.

He's a millionaire who has been rewarded for his behavior. Of course he will continue to do this. This shit is popular because people support it.

I'm not sure if Em is homophobic or not, but after that scene in "the Interview" I would assume that simply by joking about the topic, he may not be that against it. Usually if you're truly anti something, you would never admit to doing it, right?

Edit: I just want to apologize to anybody that was offended because I really meant nothing foul with my words. I'm not homophobic, and I didn't mean to instigate or condone any of Eminem's speeches. When I said "get used to it", I only meant Eminem would never change his ways. I honestly didn't mean to hurt anybody. I also want to make it clear I wasn't defending him or his actions or his words, and I don't agree with Em's words at all.

1. Rap songs have always included some form of this, its not just these days and the genre isn't turning trash.

2. They are and have been plenty of rap songs that don't have in any of that stuff.

3. Whenever a thread about rap comes up on here since its predominantly dominated by black artists a lot of the discussion always comes across a bit ........ suspect to me, like some of what is being said isn't only being directed at Rap but at black culture on a whole. I don't think its conscious on the part of some posters but its still there to me.

Is it just me?

Is part of the Slim Shady character

The same character that said he would fuck Jennifer Lopez and cum inside her even if she was his mother so he can have a brother and son at the same time or pull 7 kids from columbine and shot them with an AK47

Yep, it's a character but there is no nuance left in the world.

This guy, the great homophobe who maintains a friendship with Elton John and sent him and his partner a gift for their marriage.

To be fair, in an argument people will say what it takes to hurt them.

I made this comparison in another thread but

Eminem is South Park

South Park, even modern south park should get called out on a lot of shit. But its kind of a societal institution and no one wants to call it out because " Its south park " but they should call it out because it might force the people making it to be better if it was called out or if the people creating the work were made to care more

He's homophobic. There's no question about it.

I'm not saying he is or he isn't. Trial by a public jury isn't our place, but when you look at the evidence. Yes he has absolutely made homophobic comments before, but he has also played himself in a role where has has confessed to being homosexual. If you were truly anti-homosexual, I wonder if you would knowingly play yourself as a homosexual.

It's not just you. It's evident that a lot of the people bitching about rap music on this site don't actually listen to it.

I'm not defending it. I simply said they were generalizing his fans who enjoy the vast majority of his library

No. This is exactly what i said and exactly what i meant:

You can enjoy his music without feeling the need to defend this shit. If you defend this shit you are indeed defending homophobia. Which kinda makes you a homophobe no?

Like his music all you want. Just please don't defend his usage of the word because at that point you are defending homophobia. This isn't complicated.

Do you make this kind of thread when rappers YOU LIKE call women bitches?

Is anyone mad Joyner Lucas said "maricon" in Lucky You or does that not matter

His last album is #1 in lot of places, his new singles are trending everywhere, what are you talking about

You're ignorant. There's no question about it.

Maybe step away from your Eminem adulation and realize that you can like something while realizing that it contains problematic things within it. It's not the end of the world and it will help you grow.

White rappers talk about bustin nuts on bitches. It's not a race thing to notice the lyrics in rap songs are about those subjects. You think me saying that rap is dumb with shit like bustin nuts on bitches is directed towards black culture on a whole? lol ok man!

How can people listen to such puerile, homophobic nonsense? And then get on the Internet and defend it?

You can be gay and homophobic. It's actually pretty common
Why even ask this question
Because even Tyler says it... A LOT. He's talked about actively killing gay people, and all kinds of heinous shit. And he's either gay, bisexual, or trolling. That said, I don't believe Em is homophobic. Like at all. And I'm not a fan. Hell listen to Mayhem Lauren's album glass. He says it. It actually took me by surprise, cuz he's not homophobic either. What I wish is that they'd stop using that word. It's fucked up.

It definitely fell out of the the rap lexicon for the most part. Surprising to hear these days to be honest.

Eminem seems like he lives in a bubble only sticking his head out during an album cycle to choose who he should name drop.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I did not realize that rap music, or the raps as the kids say, contain explicit and offensive lyrics.

Rap music should not reflect urban culture at all and should be sanitized for white, upper-class liberal protection.
