I feel the reason fighting games never won GOTY is because it's very hard to innovate in them. I have Smash on WiiU and from what I have seen Ultimate looks like the same game except with more content and that's isn't worthy of being a GOTY imo. On the other hand it's much easier to add tons of new things into open world action adventure games like RDR, Spiderman or GoW which makes them more likely to get GOTY.

well, right now my GotY is Dragon Ball FighterZ and the story mode is crap.

goty is a flawed thing. you are comparing apples and oranges and even then there is heavy platform bias jnvolved sometimes. i can not understand how mordor got so many gotys for example.

It's not even out yet.

It'll probably be like #3 or 4 on Era's GOTY list anyway.

I would definitely be happy if a fighting game won for a change, but these "Narrative experiences" are just too dominant for the media, plus it comes in December so the decision might have been already made by the time it comes out.

Speaking of which:

Smash 4's 92 MC vs. DA: Inquisition's 89 still baffles me.

People like ammunition to justify that their preferred game is better than others.

I like GOTY awards when they highlight overlooked games that do something special, but that rarely happens.

You should see if a mod can change the title to Smash Bros Ultimate, since the last game was called Smash Bros for Wii U and at a glance it's awkward.

Or change it to Super Smash Bris, a game where Doctor Mario circumcises foreskins into the Smash Bros logo.

As for Smash, just like with any other fighting game, it won't have a big presence in GOTY discussions aside from this forum.

Although it is an excellent fighting game, I find it difficult to win awards.

The most narrative experiences have an advantage in these cases, with some exceptions.

Besides, has a fighting game ever won the majority of GOTY awards before? It's not gonna happen even if the game came out earlier.

It's not a remaster.

- New rendering engine
- Completely different (and new) modes
- completely different UI

In terms of contents i can't think a single game that got more than this one at launch.

I think it has very good chances to be my personal GOTY, if we are talking about Geoff Keighley thing i believe it would be nominated for 2019 then.

PS: Don't call it Smash Bros U OP. (It sounds like the Wii U game)

The game isn't out yet. I guarantee that discussion will be had many times over in December if the game actually lives up to expectations, but this is premature. Even if the game is actively being demoed in multiple locations, that still isn't a guarantee about every aspect of the final product.

But nah the gaming media has a huge boner for single player games. + A lot of these journalist don't even know how to play smash

Overwatch was media darling cause it was blizzard and was on every system available
