there's just no way we're not getting another Smash Direct before launch and there's no way that's only gonna have two character reveals (echoes included)

NO WAY I tell you

Let me put it like this.

If that box had 4 rows of 9 characters each shown, and they would have been numbered as they are here, I would consider the box theory a serious contender, because it would follow a perfectly logical arrangement of things.

The "teeth" rows, however, look contrived to me. I know that's what is shown on the box, but I see no valid reason to do it like that. Which makes me think there's more manipulation to it than just not putting Isabelle and Incineroar or whatever there. I remember 3DS CSS, mind you. But still.

They're definitely going to reveal DLC before the game comes out. It makes sense to give consumers the idea that DLC is something the game will have and it will generate more hype even if the character(s) doesn't come out for a while

If that box theory is true then I don't really mind, since DLC is inevitable and might be even more of a focus this time around, but Incineroar would be a very lame final reveal. I don't even mind him as a character, I just think that's a very weird note to end the hype cycle on

The box theory is interesting and has a solid reasoning as basis but I don't believe simply because of the marketing strategy of the game. They simply wouldn't have revealed five characters at once in August if all they have left to reveal past mid-september is one newcomer and an echo.
I don't think we're getting many more characters but I'd believe at least two newcomers + two echos.

Note that all of that is moot if Ken is not an echo in the end (like Isabelle), then I'd fully believe that to be the final roster.

They said that there aren't many new characters left beforehand.

Also, why are you guys so hungry for DLC? For all we know Sakurai might not feel like making any DLC.

the game will not have DLC.It's called ultimate for a reason :)
Also Sakurai already said that all the characters in the game will be revealed before the release.

sorry everyone we revealed the roster total on the digital image of a box before launch even though we edit box art to avoid this situation literally all the time

:( sorry

The game's called SPECIAL in Japan, the Ultimate title is just for flair and probably won't follow the dictionary definition. If it did, we wouldn't even get balance patches

Also Nintendo has pretty much said DLC is a possibility, but Sakurai is focusing on getting the game out first. All things considered, though, Nintendo talked a big game about DLC sales on Wii U so from a business perspective they'd be kinda stupid not to do it again

What if they want to reveal every character before November.

I don't have any real basis for that, just a hunch, and I could believe a newcomer and echo reveal on October to round it off if that's the case. Maybe a DLC tease pre-launch like Mewtwo was in November.

Revealing everything by the end of October isn't too far-fetched. But we're almost guaranteed to have another smash direct where they go over the hidden mode and they've already set peoples expectations with the last one. Going from 2 newcomers and 3 echoes to 1 newcomer and 1 echo is obviously gonna disappoint people and they know this. That's the main reason I have trouble believing there won't be 2 more newcomers at minimum.

"Whether or not he decides to do DLC again, or whether or not he decides this is the ultimate edition and there's nothing more I can fit in there - we'll have to see as we get closer to launch."

The Special Edition of Smash.

Everyone is Here wouldn't sit well with DLC.

i believe in the box theory and we will probably get DLC, maybe an announcement in november? newcomer roster is pretty small (6 unique, 5 echoes) if true so i can see them announcing dlc characters around then

If Sakurai doesn't want to do DLC, Nintendo will just let someone else do it instead. I doubt the new Nintendo executives will let one man decide if Nintendo makes more money or not.

In the end Sakurai has shown he is unwilling to let go of the reigns of Smash so I assume he'll be with us for two more years at least after launch.

There's absolutely going to be DLC. Probably a season pass too. Smash 4 DLC sold great, there's simply no way Nintendo will leave money on the table with SSBU.

If we're lucky, some of it might be free! Think of how Mario Tennis Aces is releasing free characters every month. We might get some free echoes like that! As for new stages and unique characters, I'm sure those will be paid.

theyre probably at point of cutting characters that didnt make it to the roster due to time restraints and they'll end up being announced for DLC

similar to the theory of mewtwo's development in smash 4

just my guess though

Isabelle has really grown on me. So much that I'm going to give her a try.

She definitely looks considerably more like a newcomer than I initially thought. She's even only a partial semi clone, even more than Luigi to Mario or Lucas to Ness.

The trailer certainly caught me by surprise, was so convinced that Isabelle would be an Echo fighter too.

Now I can't imagine Isabelle even being one, it'd be weird seeing her yielding an axe or boxing gloves

What? Why would people want smash DLC? It's already happened once, the demand is there. If Sakurai wants to make the ULTIMATE smash game, he shouldn't skip DLC

Well you don't have to worry about paying for him, considering he's already an assist trophy

I didn't buy the DLC for Smash Wii U.

This new smash bros is an anthology of the game.It doesn't make sense to have DLC in it.

People have the most bizarre hangups. I could understand that need to have everything in one package for one price, but I don't see the problem of being able to offer MORE content. Just sounds like an excuse to not wanting to pay more.

Edit: I was right, wanting something for nothing.

if there really is only one more full newcomer and one more echo left, they really should have saved the k. Rool and either Chrom or Dark Samus reveals for a later date.

can't wait to pay money for Shadow the Dumb Hedgehog

and I'll do it, because I absolutely will not stand for an incomplete Smash roster

you're talking to the wrong person, i wasnt the one who thinks its not possible at all, the other person did though. my stance is more or less "yeah i guess thats not farfetched to think they didnt plan it yet, but they are probably doing that now anywho regardless"

I could see this being the extent of the current DLC plans atm. Probably (as I stated before), content that prob couldn't make the cut to the base game first. They're probably in that development phase right now (or close to it) given we're 3 months away from release.

EDIT: If DLC planning happens right now, I'd imagine it's probably some content that was planned for the base game but was cut due to time restraints. Mewtwo sort of gave me that vibe in Smash 4.

nice try though lol

i feel more confident about it now. they have probably started plans for this maybe a few months ago since the deadline is looming the more i think about this

While I trust anyone that has been to a rabbit cafe, I'm not sure if Nintendo would release a season pass for Smash DLC. Nintendo usually gives some information about what their season passes will include, but they like to keep Smash a secret. For example, even if it's as vague as saying the season pass will get you three DLC packs, that would likely mean there are at least three DLC characters planned and Nintendo would rather people have no idea how much DLC to expect from Smash.

Also, Nintendo knows they can make more money selling all the characters separately because it's Smash.

Bring the roster to 200 with DLC. It'll be the Tenkaichi 3 of Smash. The mugen of our dreams. The knuckles featuring Dante from the new Funky mode series ! Do it Sakurai.

I want this to happen just because it'll be really funny to have a 200-character roster with Waluigi still an assist trophy

Wonder Red will happen.

I was tempted to reject his ways by the cynical box theory, but I know better than to fall victim to the vapid vice of vandalising my reputation.

Wonder Red is a sign of care.

Perhaps, but Nintendo's done season passes for a lot of their big titles recently, like BotW and Xenoblade 2. Smash is one of their biggest titles yet, so I can see them working one into it. I don't think the number of characters is a very big deal personally; if they end up making more than what the first pass would provide, they can always just have a second season of DLC. Though that's getting way ahead of myself now!

I am not salty about Isabelle anymore. In fact Isabelle isn't even what I was initially upset about. It was the idea of semi clones.

Isabelle barely qualifies as a derivative. In fact, she doesn't even seem like a Luigi or Wolf style clone. She's pretty much completely unique. Think Ike and Marth.

New semi clones are still not a thing, and my biggest fear (echo overload) is not a thing because Ken's the last one. So Richter is likely the only cosmetic echo.
My man, you are so close to the "acceptance" stage but you're still stuck somewhere between "denial" and "bargaining" by trying to change what it means to be a semi-clone.

If I wanted to hear you threaten to kill me, I would've asked you to. But no you're just going in my DMs telling me I'm subhuman for whatever reason. I'm over it.

Edit: uh that was meant to be a DM I didn't mean to post it here uh

Quick questions. How the Pre-Load and Pre-Purchase works?

I can see there are some games that when you pre-purchase, also pre-load the game and you basically have almost the full game, and on the day of the launch it just update a small file that will let you play the game. Nintendo is well aware that people already is able to read those files, so I can see that the full reveal roster will happend on a direct where they also announce that they can pre-load the game already (to avoid leaks).

Saying this, its interesting to see that there is planned a smash bundle that include a download code for 1 month before launch (the 2nd of November). So if someone can Pre-purchase the game already, we will see the smash profile by the 2nd of November on the eShop for sure. But Im guessing this pre-purchases doesnt means that it can always pre-load right? (I think you can already pre-purchase things like Diablo 3, but I dont think it load anything in the console)

This is also something that can be related to the Press Codes. I think Nintendo are giving now those codes like 1 month or couple of weeks before launch (wasn't Mario Kart 8 Deluxe like 1 month before?). Is the pre-load active at the same time? meaning the Press codes are just pre-loads that get active?

I'm not sure how this works on Nintendo Switch, so if someone has more info, we could narrow by when we will know the full roster, and if it is the same than the Press Code, a Pre-Load by the 2nd of November doesn't looks so crazy.

What do you think?
