I know that many here are ready to give Rockstar the GOTY price.

But Think back of March 2018.
There was a debate about whether or not the new SSB is gonna be a deluxe version of SSB WiiU.
It's not.
E3 videos show all the little change in every characters that made the game a NEW one.
Since then , many new characters were announced. The roster is HUGE and there still figthers yet to come until december.
The amount of stages and variations is insane.
The OST is the biggest in any videogame ever.

Look at what this game is. It's the BIGGEST love letter to videogame EVER. And not just that but they listened the fans to answer them in propre way (better HUD, more speed fights, combo...) . For example we will start with SSB64 characters and we need to unlock all of them! It's gonna BE HUGE! This is insane.
And it's obvious that there will be DLC. It's a game that is supposed to live all along the Switch era.

I know that John Marston and his pals are already winning.
But can we just, for once consider Smash as a GOTY contender? Because smash never won this.

This is not a smash bros fan topic to talk about the game.
It's a topic about how huge the game is, and should we consider it as a GOTY contender. Thx

Typically narrative games take that honor, but yes, it'll likely score higher than the Wii U version it iterates on.

My money is still on Red Dead or God of War, but Smash will definitely be my most-played.

Why not wait for the game to

you know

come out? And then you can judge it on its merits as a game, a thing that you experience by playing it, and then rightfully decide whether or not it is one of the best Games Of The Year?

I need to know what singleplayer we've got in this, and if it looks good.

If wonder Red is playable it'll be my GOTY. Simple.

If you are talking about like, game sites and whatnot, I doubt it'll win many that are not NIntendo focused.

Overwatch won recently but it was a pretty big shakeup in the multiplayer world (and it was on 3 platforms). It wasn't an iteration on a formula.

Nah, it's gonna get smashed (heyyy) by more narrative driven games, releasing in december also doesn't help.

Can we actually play the two games we discuss before we decide they are better

IMO Spider-Man is GOTY. I mean it could be RDR 2 (it's Rockstar afterall), but I enjoyed Spider-Man so much I have a hard time seeing RDR 2 beating it, personally.
Smash is a fun game to just mess around in, I doubt it'll stick too much in my brain.

You say this is not a smash bros fan topic but your write up reads like one...

Let the game release.

As for December games being ignored I think the reviews will come before release? Should be eligible then for tga and even if it's not then you can vote for it on the goty thread decision thread on era.

Does it really matter? If it ends up being your personal game of the year, that's more important than anything else. And it's not like Smash is some niche game that needs the extra exposure.

My game of the year is likely going to end up being Monster Hunter: World, and there's no way in hell that's getting top honors from more than a few outlets.

wrong, goty will be warriors orochi 4

plus it has 165+ characters, that's more than double smash u.

I rest my case

Overwatch won in 2016

It totally did, and it was deserved, but 2016's nominees were like Inside (which was *more* Limbo), Uncharted 4 (which was *more* Uncharted - and retconny and fatalist to boot), and Titanfall 2 (which was more Titanfall - albeit with an excellent campaign).

Overwatch is my most-played game this gen, but it will not be the game I think back on.

I wish people would have an open mind that theirs or anyones GOTY could be something you've never heard of yet or even considered in the category. The idea of having these designated GOTY contenders before the games have even released is a problem driven by hype culture.

If early access games are now eligible, then why not ports/re-masters? No I don't believe the game in question to be either of these.

I just want to see the hand-wringing over Switch's year continue.

But it's already expected to make it in top 10 on the next ERA GotY...

In any case, let the goddamn game release first before making a campaign to push it for GotY

Thats the reason you cant take this Awards too serious...its always going to be the best Action-Adventure, RPG or Shooter.
Everything else has pretty much no shot regardless of how good or successful.

Its unlikely that a fighting game will be in the GOTY discussion and I wouldnt take for granted that RDR2 will be better than GoW, there are alot of indie games that deserve to be in the discussion as well.

I dont think its reasonable to want to hand out game of the year awards for games that arent even out.

No. Regardless of how much content is has, it's just another Smash game. It's not winning any major website GOTY awards in a year with some spectacular games.

Game is out in december
We know what happened to those games. They are ignored. It's like every year December doesn't exist for the competition of some prices.

Yeah, if Nintendo thought Smash would sell Xenoblade numbers, they wouldn't hinge their entire Q3/Q4 (and E3) on the game.

I've already spent, god, $500 on the game? Between collector's editions and controllers and adapters.

you care way too much about these kinds of things
if its your goty who cares what publications put as their yearly top fave
its not about "winning" its about celebrating and discussing great games, not pitting them against each other

or at least that's the intention

Game is unreleased...

Has a remaster ever nominated?

-_-

I think this is what OP is talking about. This and the fact that so many people are saying let the game come out first.

Clearly that is what needs to happen, but when people make claims about Red Dead taking GotY no one bats an eye about it, let alone saying something like "wait for it to come out first".

The Game isnt Even Out.

Just amount of content won't make the Game GOTY. If it feels to close to smash4, it Will have mixed reviews (i hope that isnt the case).

Let games come out and speak for themselves. You gain nothing from hyping things up months in advance.

Besides, quantity of content alone shouldn't be a qualifier.

I doubt it. The game is the a very polished and refined version of a gameplay engine that dates back to Melee. No way will if have the kind of impact needed for GOTY consideration.

I can easily see it being top 5 for me, but let's wait for the game to come out.

I worry about having good matches online tbh.

Pretty much my opinion on this.

We still don't know nothing about that misterious mode in the main menu. What if it turns out to be just a mediocre/bad mode? Would people still claiming that is a GOTY?

SoTC deserves to, but Smash Ultimate isn't a remaster anyway. It's a new game with a new engine that has lots of new movement/combat mechanics, lots of tweaks on old Smash mechanics, new models/animations and hefty balance/moveset alterations for every returning characters, a bunch of new characters, etc. It is a noticably faster and more technical game than Smash 4 was, and that's a result of the myriad changes made to core mechanics for this entry. Nintendo is marketing this game on the back of its returning content for that nostalgia appeal, but make no mistake, this Smash is as much a new game as the last few have been. I'd have figured that the recent Smash direct (the one where Simon was announced) would have put this whole angle to bed, considering how much time was dedicated to detailing specific mechanical changes and advancements, and how each character shown was visibly more agile and had new animations/mechanical quirks.
