Personally, that's what I think this means. My current prediction is that sometime in October, we will get a livestream on the Smash website (like the Lucina/Falcon/Robin reveal) where Incineroar and Ken will be revealed, and they will take the missing two slots on the box. Other characters revealed later will simply not be on the box at all, to avoid spoilers for the final Smash Direct in November.

So maybe a shadow drop trailer with Ken and someone else. Then a Smash Direct in late November around the time they send out review copies?
Inklings are definitely more popular than Isabelle imo. Splatoon is on its way to 10+ million as well, joining Animal Crossing there, and Inklings have been present in almost every piece of Nintendo's promotional material - Directs/E3 - in the last 3 years, including Mario Kart 8 (along with Isabelle!). Two major releases in that time (and one meaty expansion) have also kept them incredibly relevant.
I'm not disputing Isabelle being one of the Nintendo characters not in Smash with the highest general popularity, but I doubt general popularity is the same as popularity in the ballot.
To be honest, this is the best theory so far that doesn't dispute the box theory completely either. Would also indicate that the final Smash direct might be as late as mid November.
Sure, I don't disagree there. My point in highlighting that was that Isabelle did not need additional criteria like Sakurai wanting additional female reps. I think she made it in on her (and ACNL's) general popularity alone.

I am not salty about Isabelle anymore. In fact Isabelle isn't even what I was initially upset about. It was the idea of semi clones.
Isabelle barely qualifies as a derivative. In fact, she doesn't even seem like a Luigi or Wolf style clone. She's pretty much completely unique. Think Ike and Marth.
New semi clones are still not a thing, and my biggest fear (echo overload) is not a thing because Ken's the last one. So Richter is likely the only cosmetic echo.

I hope Sakurai goes in depth about Isabelle in his column. I want to know how she came to be, since she's special in many ways. Only semi clone so far, only female rep (not counting two gendered Inkling), and how did she do on ballot? Hopefully next week!
I doubt there will be a Let's Go Direct. They'll continue to drop news and trailers every month, but t's unlikely that they have anything worth a livestream. If Incineroar or any other Gen VII Pokémon is in Smash, it's more likely to be revealed in a Robin-style stream or reserved for a larger presentation later in November.

I don't know, but im mostly getting the game just for the starter. I would have had to flip a coin but my sister is obsessed to the point where she has like pikachu pajamas so i couldn't win that battle.
The box theory is interesting and has a solid reasoning as basis but I don't believe simply because of the marketing strategy of the game. They simply wouldn't have revealed five characters at once in August if all they have left to reveal past mid-september is one newcomer and an echo.

Box theory only holds if Ken is an echo since only reason he'd be placed on the other side is if he was next to Ryu.
Otherwise I fully agree with everything else you said before.

This Box Theory reminds me how we found out that Lyn and Celica would have been in Fire Emblem Warriors before their announcement because of the picture of the European limited edition. So I think that this theory can actually be true, even though it would mean we're going to get only another newcomer in Smash. But maybe there will be DLCs characters announced in a last Direct before the game being released and clearly not showing themselves on the box.
