Any film that ends up in Oscars season will have a mix of extreme praise and brutal criticism. I can't say Three Billboards was the worst film that Oscar season - Darkest Hour was a thing - but it's one that I agreed with the crowd that disliked it.

That film obviously isn't maliciously racist, but it handles race terribly.

It's the movie equivalent of a David Cage game.
My biggest issue with the movie is that it brings up criticism of institutional racism and police corruption then just... kinda clumsily sweeps it under the rug? The film is a thematic failure at the very least.

For the problems people have with Blackkklansman that movie actively confronts the issues with the police instead of just giving a shrug.

I think the David Cage comparison is a good one, if only because I feel like the fundamental problem with each is that they try to tell stories about contemporary America from a foreign perspective, but with essentially zero real understanding of why contemporary America is how it is, which makes them often feel extremely boneheaded and clumsy about the themes they're tackling.

I don't think Three Billboards is maliciously racist necessarily, it just stumbles into it by being flippant and stupid.

This Wesley Morris NYT piece is extremely good.

honestly you can probably email brad/jeff and let em know

...actually does it have jeff in it? If it's just the video of the canadians I don't think it'll be as fun.
Given the UPF UNO stuff, I think I'd just need to supply a brief 240x340 video of Canadians doing...things...

And yeah, Jubbe, that is the cutest kid. She's gonna own that continent one day.

53 people live in Eucla but Wikipedia decided to surface that to me for some reason but not Canberra on the Australia map. What does that say about your continent?

Look, I'm gonna be honest with you, Whippy. That isn't the middle of the night.

But I'm also looking for an excuse to post the Australian Beef Youtube video because that's as close to comfortably posting culturally insensitive material on this site that I can do and I really want to. You apparently not knowing what "middle of the night" means just makes this more likely, but I really want your permission before I do it.

I agree, military time is preferable, but that has nothing to do with the idea of "middle of the night." I'm willing to let this go.

So please say that I can post the video. Pleeeeeaaaaaasssssssssse.

I don't know, I really enjoyed three ebbings misery. Didn't really come out of it rooting for anyone or feeling like the film is racist, then again, I'm not American. Almost all of the characters in the film are flawed assholes. However, I did have empathy for some of them. The performances are some next level shit and is what makes it worth watching.

I don't know why you need my permission for it lol
Because I feel like it's a foreigner posting the Log Driver's Waltz. It just doesn't work.

Edit: then in fairness I'll do both Canada shitting on itself via its bad art, and the Crew shitting on Australia via Australians.

(I grew up on this trash)

I mean hey, it's a classic segment.

Also watching the fist of the north star segment on UPF made me go from eh to "I've gotta get this game day 1."

The movie has racist characters but that doesn't make the film racist. A film can contain racism witbout being about racism or going too deep on racism, that does not make the film racist. It's an ugly film, but it is supposed to be.

Anyway, I've only seen the film once and thought it was good not great, so I'm not going to defend my position any further.

Jubbe I haven't even seen the movie yet but it seems like the common conversation around the movie is that people are talking about the weird glorification of racist characters. Nobody is saying that films can't have racist people and not be racist as a movie (look at a whole lot of Tarantino's work), but rather that by having racist characters and then ignoring it they shirk the conversation that could and probably should exist therein, and then further rewarding those actors with literal awards without really acknowledging the problems kind of ducks everything. This is kind of reminding me of the conversation around CDPR and that Cyberpunk 2077 demo and the idea that you can't have people saying "cunt", as though that was actually the point at all.

That said again I haven't seen the movie yet so this is just what I've gathered, and anyone correct me if I'm reading this wrong, please.

I can't fathom how anybody can watch Three Billboards and come away from it thinking it glorifies the racist characters. They are all extreamly unhappy and their life gets worse as the movie continues while the people who aren't racist are shown to be kind and nice people.

Also there's that scene in American Hustle where Bradley Cooper takes her to a public bathroom and tries to not have sex with her while staring at her ass...but she doesn't have much of one? That may be more a failure of casting but that scene did not ring true in the moment. Sorry she is not perfect.
Trying to get banned again huh

SHE IS PERFECT

As soon as the new EU law is in action I need you all to stop posting any memes in this thread or I'll get arrested for reading it.
Pretty sure that's how it works
