I don't even entirely understand why people are upset that Havoc didn't want to be called a Mutant anymore.

Isn't that specifically a slur used by humans? Don't Mutants generally want to be regarded as humans, just with powers and/or physical changes?

Comic writing seems universally awful. The exposition has to be told in such an awkward way.

It feels like it has similar problems to video games. The format inherently limits the quality of a story in certain ways. Gameplay and length tends to get in the way of video games. Being art driven and lasting decades seems to get in the way of the story for comics. Telling everything in speech bubbles just seems super difficult.
It's definitely difficult which is why the best examples are recognized as such. Try something limited like All Star Superman, it's only 12 issues and it's fantastic.

Anyone remember the book "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way"? It contained some good drawing foundations for one to build upon, and also provided young comics readers some insight into how a comic book was made.

More than a few comics artists took the advice it gives to heart, particularly this gem from the chapter on "action":

Now let's see this in practice, with some of Marvel Comics' leading men of science!

...

With great power comes great responsibility. And problems. Troubled by clones? Don't know how to discuss the nuances of the subject with your beloved wife? Not an issue for Peter Parker, co-inventor of the Spider-Mobile!

While I get the joke you're making and like the cut of your jib, it should be noted this page does not follow the provided style guide at all. There's virtually no sense of motion to it.

It's actually a completely terrible composition.

Format is one thing, but the sheer volume of comic content adds another layer of difficult. These guys had to write a lot of comics and they had to do it with deadlines. After a few months they had to be running out of ideas, so they just let the imagination go wild and start writing whatever they come up with. They had no time to fine tune or rewrite. They just pumped out the first thing they could think of. That's going to create a lot of dumb stuff.

Which reminds me of Lobo, who creates clones by regenerating his blood.

WHICH REMINDS ME of the most dumb moment in the entire history of comics.

So here is a little context.

In the middle of the 90's Marvel and DC made the DC vs Marvel comic event which not only created the Almagam Universe which is the best thing comics ever did for both the best and worst reasons, but they also made some kind of fighting tourney between their characters.

The problem was that it was not an actual writers understanding which character would win, it was a fucking popularity contest.

So we have this one that is Lobo vs Wolverine .. and Lobo would win because he is a joke character so he is super broken but not only that would make this dumb, but what makes it dumb is that the most ferocious characters active will fight and THIS is what you get

2Zvof8k.jpg

you ... simply don't see the fight

The writers later joked that Lobo claimed he was paid to take a dive by "some bald guy." Which would explain the whole thing.

I concur!

Dat 1990s Image Comics influence.

Sal Buscema and Bill Sienkiewicz were seemingly capable artists in the 70s and 80s, but as a team producing Liefeld/McFarlane/Lee-esque pin-up art, whatever artistic style they had as individuals was sidelined in the comic industry's pursuit of 90s speculator dollars.

Not defending Sal, but here's work of his from the 1970s in comparison. You could at least tell that he took some influence from Stan and his brother's book.

I mean, that's one hell of a locked door for Spidey to open.

Ty1Jrye.jpg

Back on topic, here's some more dumb 1970s Marvel, featuring man of science Bruce Banner, drawn by John Buscema, and written by Hank Pym's favorite writer, Jim Shooter, in a tale for Rampaging Hulk #23 that was entitled "A Very Personal Hell".

GPVvdvd.jpg

Like that Kitty Pryde panel from Uncanny X-Men that's been posted, that comic has not aged well at all. In hindsight, Jim has "conceded that perhaps the story was a mistake."

To be fair, if something like that were created in the 1990s, it might have looked like this:

Northstar coming out is not a dumb moment, but how the story is presented and unfolds qualifies.

Comics, man.

Bonus: what a cover!

359 posts in? Seriously guys, you're slipping...

I still need to know who was disguising themselves as the trash can...

No, this is amazing and has been my Twitter/Facebook banner for years. It should be in a museum.

I agree! It's one of my favorite panels. It's everything you want in a comic panel. I love how these super-powered, arrogant, manly men have this exchange and then..."toot!" It's brilliant. And dumb. I love it.

This is the opposite of Dumb.

No, no. It is dumb. The best kind of dumb.

At least this came out of it

I think a lot of it also likely had to do with the fact that Spectacular Spider-Man (which Buscema was the main artist on) was the secondary book with less money and time allocated to it.

I've also never been a fan of the distinct style John Romita Jr evolved into from the 90's onward.

Remember when there was a group of religious zealots that were going to install Nightcrawler as the Pope then have his image inducer fail so people would believe that the devil had infiltrated the church. Also they planned on using communion wafers to vaporize people to make people believe the rapture took place.

Remember when the Catholic Church puts a hit out on Wolverine, sending Dogma The Patron Saint of Assassins after him?

That moment in the mid 2000s when stores started selling American comics as "manga" just because the artist had a generic "I read a 'how to draw japanimation' book and watch Bleach" style.

Remember when Buffy got Superman powers and used them to have sex so hard she caused an Earthquake across the entire Arctic Ocean, smash through a mountain and then have an orgasm in orbit of the Earth?

And people criticize Kingdom Hearts storylines....
Y'know...

Kingdom Hearts is dumb, but at the same time I feel it's more of an innocent, childish dumb, and nothing really "dangerous".

The messages as hamfisted as they are tend to be positive and there's nothing overtly creepy or sexist imo like in comics.

Doesn't stop people from endlessly bitching a storm about it, as if the audacity of inserting anime into (insert Disney property here) is some kind of unforgivable offense.

Unlike the stuff posted here. Spider-Man may not have frequently bad storylines, but the ones that do turn up are so insulting and at times repulsive that they honsestly do turn me off from reading any other comics.

I don't read comics that frequently, but I remember looking at the Wikipedia page for the Incredible Hulk a few years back and in the "Powers" section it was stated that the Hulk is so strong that he once "punched his way through a time storm."

  1. What is a "time storm?"
  2. How the hell do you punch your way through it?
