Wait, wait, wait. I think I've got it.

What if the chairs were hinting at the game's final boss, Master Ass, since Sakurai's ass would logically be what are placed on his chair?

Or it could be a new boss duo. Master Cheek and Crazy Cheek.

The implication this puts in place for the equivalent of Master Core is fantastic

This makes sense. Would solve so much, like what happened to Snake's previously big ass. Snake hides in a box (box theory) and his cheeks became the new boss duo, solving the chair theory.

So here's an overly optimistic thought that I just had: it almost seems as if Sakurai intentionally chose characters for this roster that didn't need stages to go along with them. It's probably wishful thinking on my part, but I could see Sakurai deliberately putting aside a few characters that would deserve a stage of their own (like Elma or Inceniroar for example) and save them for DLC so that they could be added alongside their corresponding stages, while making stage-less characters a higher priority for the base roster due to time constraints.

That way, Sakurai could surprise us all at the last Smash direct with more than one big announcement, even though he'd still have only a single newcomer to show us for the base roster if box theory is to be believed.

I somewhat agree but Incineroar is basically the poster boy for a character that doesn't need to bring a stage with them.

Just wanted to say Isabelle being in doesn't discount the ballot. We have no idea how she did on that. Pretend forum polls mean nothing

I think we would get some new stages. If nothing else to have something say that's not modes assuming the Box Theory is actually something.

It's also important to note that the ballot is just a reference. They might have had certain goals, like including at least one female newcomer, and Isabelle made most sense due to relevance + popularity, even if there were 10 more popular male characters for example. And imo no matter what you think about Isabelle, having a guaranteed female newcomer in Ultimate too feels good to me. (Not counting the two gendered Inkling here.)

Man the dumbest thing about the Box Theory is the idea that they rotate certain characters to be on the right side and the others by the left side. Why not just it be the same numerical system they've had for the roster thus far from left to right?

Honestly, I don't know what there is to discount. The ballot was just data gathering. They never said they were going to stick to it 100%. Isabelle was already a character whose overwhelming popularity was known, so I think she would have a strong chance of being in with or without the ballot.

They've done polls before. The only real difference in the ballot is the visibility and the fact that it's been open internationally.

The characters are in the number order though, just alternating sides every nine characters. That isn't part of the theory (people thinking there are only two more characters is dumb), it's just a fact based on the preview image we can see.

There really aren't, though. There are no "modern" Nintendo characters with Isabelle's level of popularity, outside of maybe Splatoon.

That's the thing. Why alternate it between 9 characters? Why not just do it in the same ordered rotation they've been hammering in since the reveal of the game? "Let's make all the characters we've set in an order that's been consistent in all marketing except for this box art for no arbitrary reason." The funny thing is I looked at the website and doing it in the same chronological order would make Snake the last character which according to the theory would be Cloud.

If we are getting 2 more characters I don't think one of them will be an Echo and I don't think we'll get a Pokemon based on the other roster picks we've seen. All the newcomers so far have been from franchises that had few characters and new IPs. Also they have been characters that were well established in 2015-late 2016. A Gen 7 Pokemon rep goes against both of these. We already have a shitton of Pokemon in the roster and none of the Gen 7 Pokemon would be well established at this point. The only reason to assume there would be a Pokemon is if Sakurai was forced to but I think Ultimate would be the game to buck that trend. In the same way that Ultimate is the first game to not include a Fire Emblem rep since Melee even though Fire Emblem is more relevant now than it's ever been.

I don't really understand why you're arguing.

It's groups of 9 because whoever designed the box thought it looked cool. 36 characters fit either side so you can do 4 neat groups of 9 per side.

It's a little late for wish lists, but I wasted 20 minutes of my life making this graphic of characters I want in Smash that will literally Never Be In It.
And I appreciate that you took the time to make this. I always enjoy seeing people's wish lists. Though your list doesn't have enough Skull Kid for my taste, it does have Elma, Rex and Pyra, and Roto, and they alone makes it a good list in my opinion. However, Adol pushes it from a good list to a great list. Thank you for sharing.

Chibi Robo, Golden Sun, Advance Wars, Style Savvy, Rhythm Heaven, Wonderful 101, and Sin and Punishment reps would all be so cool. :( Still hoping there's at least one 1st party surprise in store but I'm not too optimistic.

Smash Ultimate doesn't feel like a celebration of Nintendo and gaming history with its roster. It feels like a celebration of Smash Bros. That's fine, but there's a definite shift from representing more and more series to just digging deeper in already-represented franchises.

Thank you for joining Team Layton. We shall hope against the odds and until the world crumbles to dust.

I honestly don't even know how a Layton character would work but I love seeing non-fighting characters adapted into fighting games. I know Smash has quite a few already, but I'm always down for more.

Yeah, I feel like all those picks might be a little to niche with the smaller amount of newcomers this time around. Seems like the picks have been more about filling holes of popular characters in popular franchises so far.

Not to burst anyone's bubble but I think Layton missed his shot in Smash 4. He had a chance then even as his franchise was getting oversaturated and run into the ground.
The series has pretty much fallen out of relevancy since then.

Now Jibanyan on the other hand

So, who is it actually going to be, girls an boys?

Heihachi Mishima or Lloyd Irving?

Or, Just a Ms. Pac-Man echo fighter?

I wonder if the developers knew about the inclusion of a playable Funky Kong in Tropical Freeze's switch port enough to add him as an echo fighter of DK.

Have we discussed this yet, seems to suggest only 2 newcomers are left?

Edit: This is based on the Smash Special edition including the pro controller box

It has been discussed, but it's still nice of you to bring it up as it is major Smash news. However, I wish they used a different thumbnail for the video. What they show is misleading for why the theory works. The important part is that the character order on the other side of the box doesn't work without an echo fighter, which is evidence that the box we're seeing here is not simply a placeholder.

If this is out at the end of September, then not sure how much we should be taking the box into consideration.

It may just be that we will see one more newcomer before the month ends. And some will still be up for speculation afterwards.

Edit: May be getting mixed up with the Smash Special Edition with Pro Controller..

Shadow, Dixie and Ken have a really good shot at making the base roster and Rex/Pyra are garunteed DLC. I wouldn't say that these character will literally never be in.

Leading consensus is that they're leaving the final characters off to prevent leaks during production.
Maybe this could just be me tired as shit but how would that work? We would just have something announce a newcomer and Ken but have a Smash Direct later? Am I misunderstanding something here?

It just means that they leave any characters due to be revealed after production of the packaging starts off of the package.

The game is just under 3 months out so they will definitely have announcements at two places. Likely a Smash Direct late November for the final newcomer(s).
