Going onto episode 5.

On the subject of voice acting, I feel like most of the cast is fine, but Rayla's voice actor seems like she's struggling a bit.

Maybe it's that accent. I don't know, just feels a bit rough.

Well my plan to ration it out a couple of episodes a day went well. Just finished it.

Obviously it's hard not to compare to Avatar given the writer, Prince Sokka, and 'Book One: Moon', but compared to Avatar's first 9 episodes it's definitely not bad. I just wish there was more already.

The animation was a little hit and miss. Sometimes it just clicked and looked amazing. But every now and then I got flashbacks to trying to run Half-Life 2 on my potato laptop.

Hopefully it's not too long before Book 2.

Anyway speculation:
So we're all thinking the king is in the bird right? And Ezra will be able to talk to him?

so if this show gets a second season will the framerate improve or is it too late for that?

i'll watch the first season tonight, here's hoping the somewhat choppy framerate won't be too distracting

The thing with the animation is that in high movement scenes it actually looks kinda nice. It's when characters are talking and being stationary where the animation really puts me off.

The story seems good so far though and that's what matters the most.

Just finished it, definitely seeing the comparison to Avatar, especially to Sokka
Thought the animation was pretty crap the first two episodes but I got used to it by the end

The aunt is the best, wonder what she was saying when the other guy wasn't translating

This is pretty damn good so far. There's some silly stuff at the start you kind of have to go with but once they got out of the castle I've started enjoying it a lot more. Episode 4 was great and introduces someone I can see becoming a fan favourite. It's kind of weird because I haven't really thought something like this before but I'm glad to see that kind of representation in media. Especially aimed at kids.

Also it's nice to see some Scottish elves , we usually get stuck with dwarves so it seems we're moving up in the fantasy world.

Question about episode 5
Anyone with some sign language knowledge know what the aunt said in front of her sister's grave/memorial?

God ok, so I watched the introduction and already it's completely overwritten to hell and back. Like they cram way too much exposition for what looks like a very generic fantasy kingdom. Also the animation so far sucks. I'm fine with cgi but intentionally lowering the framerate because it mimics 2D animation (it doesn't) doesn't work.

After about two minutes the animations didn't bother me. Maybe it's because I've watched a bunch of 3D anime's. It's not that big a deal.

Binged it last night. Thought it was okay -- good enough that I'll stick around for future seasons for now, but I'm not exactly in love.
The art style is sooooo good, but the animation is really jarring. The 3d itself you get used to, but the lack of frames is always a bit distracting (makes me think of frame drops in video games, but it's like all the time...).
I like the premise and characters well enough, but the humor is awful. Overall the show feels a bit more childish than I expected, but I suppose it could mature a bit as it goes - I hope it does.

Best part of the show was the badass deaf lady and her pretty freckled knight as her translator. I hope we see a lot more of them in the future.

Just finished it. Its not Avatar levels yet, but its definitely better than Korra. And to be fair, the first season of Avatar was the blandest, so I'm gonna stick around for Season 2.
And yeah, the bird is totally the king

gf who knows ASL told me it's something to do with her seeing her in the next life or something. She said the video I sent her was too choppy to tell though lol

Amaya to her sister:

"Hello, sister. You were my hero. Perfect, strong and unbreakable. Kind and loyal. I'm sorry, older sister, I failed you. Your children were safe and I let them slip away"

Amaya to Gren:

I trust you. You have been my voice. Now I need you to be my will and save those boys.

This is so fucking cute goddamnit. Scene from Episode 5:

:D

So I binged through all of Book 1

This really is the successor to Avatar: The Last Airbender. From the intro setting up the world, the forces of magic at work, the deity like being that everyone is after, the chase across the world, a journey of a group of misfits trying to save it, even the humour is totally Avatar.

All of the characters are super likeable and have interesting arcs being set up. Callum feels like season 3 Sokka, someone who feels useless and not knowing his place in the world, but also the plan guy. Rayla feels like Zuko, trying to find redemption, but she's Katara-ish never letting people get away with things and always butting heads with Callum. Ezran feels like a younger Aang, naive but full of wisdom. He works really well even as a kid character. I think my favourite characters are the sibling pair, Soren and Claudia. They fill a similar role as Zuko and Azula, but they are also nothing like them. Theyre hilarious.

I love the idea that Rayla serves as the the two Princes bodyguard. She's really great, and as the show goes on, she has to suffer through a really serious handicap while still playing protector.

This show feels like a mix of Lord of the Rings and other RPGs, theres like even a nod to RPG classes in one of the episodes.

I really love this show. Some of the fight choreography is really impressive. People should not let the few clips and trailers turn them off with the animation. It looks really good while youre watching. Or maybe i just got used to it.

Anyway, watch this damn show.
Awesome. Really liking the cast so far and Rayla's totally delivering so I can't wait.
I do definitely feel the Avatar (and by extension Korra, even if they didn't work on the sequel) great dna in it.

Yeah, not to say there isn't some framerate issues sometimes, but it's still a really pretty show.
I feel like the music is gonna be great too.

2 episodes in, here a few opinions:
+ Like the artstyle, they rally know how to create cel shaded characters
+ Like the music
+ Slow start but it fleshes characters out
+ German Dub is good
+ It really had that Avatar vibe in terms of presentation and humor

- SFX are like royalty free stock-effects. BAH
- Have seen some REEEAAALLY stuttring scenes and some kind of warping or wrong pixels around some characters from a distance

For the decision to go with that typical refreshrate for Anime/Cartoons.... I'm torn. It's the best implementation I have seen so far in such a media but it just looks like PAL Ocraina of Time. It constantly stutters. With motion blur in some actions scenes it is fine but in close ups it is so much more present. I hope they'll change that with Season 2.
Any Anime that uses CGI lost me at that point but I'll stick around for this. So good job, but still ways to go

EDIT:
Captured a scene from episode 2. And yes the characters are animated in 12fps. Like always. ON some scene however, based on their movement is seems like less. 6-9fps. But in Action, a decent implemented motion blur is in place to make it seem more fluid but also the background and or the camera refreshes in 24fps. Nice trick to make it look like more fluid while having less rendering time. Dunno if all this is due to budget reasons but I if possible, I would prefer 24fps all the time

I don't mean to derail the thread, but I wanted to talk about the diversity in this show. I'm someone who would prefer Ciri in the upcoming Netflix show to be white, like she's been portrayed in prior Witcher media. I know that might not be a popular opinion, but it's just the way I feel. My mind associates European inspired fantasy with European demographics, which are very homogeneous. With that being said, I absolutely adored the first 3 episodes of Dragon Prince. The lore and characters are incredibly interesting to me, and I'll definitely finish the first season by tomorrow night. The setting, appearance, and lexicon of the show feel fresh and unique, much like Avatar. And without those European conceptions, the diverse cast is amazing. My favorite character is Amaya, which I only mention due to Era's constant discussion on the importance of diversity. A deaf Asian woman with a redhead interpreter would seem out of place in something Tolkien wrote, but feels natural in the world of Katolis and Xadia. I'm sure my opinion will roll the eyes of many people on both sides of this discussion, but I just wanted to voice it.

Also I was super worried the frame rate would be distracting like Knights of Sidonia, but this felt more like an artistic decision. The action scenes seemed to sport a higher frame rate than the talking parts, and I agree with the "every frame a painting" comments!

I had to listen to the second half of the first episode. The animation was giving me a terrible headache. I'm not being facetious or hyperbolic either; it was starting to make me feel genuinely ill. It's got an interesting premise and a good pedigree behind it, but if you can't watch it without feeling terrible, it's all for naught.

Just finished the whole season. The frame rate is very noticeable and jarring. Moreso than I've ever noticed in actual cartoons and anime. In fast-paced scenes it's barely noticeable, but for the bulk of any show it's more than can be ignored. I don't know why they bothered: the way they rendered the show makes in look almost 1:1 with 2D media. There were p several times when I thought they might have just drawn in some frames instead of bothering with the 3D. The studio could have definitely foregone the framerate, or at least sped it up considerably without making it 60fps or "too smooth" or whatever.

That aside, the show is great! The characters are fun and likable, even the ones on the "villainous" side. Except the one.

Ezran is adorable.

I'm looking forward to watching season 2 whenever it comes out... and... hopefully, HOPEFULLY it comes out!

Also I already have a cosplay in mind.

I feel like the season ended just before things were about to actually pick up.
It doesn't help that it ends in a rather predictable place, storywise.

Also, I have to say, every one is too jokey. I don't mind some characters being sarcastic, but when entire scenes go on too long because of jokes, it's a bit much. (Listen, fart jokes are fine. Cutting to a completely different scene with Claudia and Soren just to have a fart joke, and nothing else, is not fine.)

Only seen a single episode thus far. Here are my thoughts:
- Overall everything just seems kinda "clunky" compared to Avatar/Korra
- Visual style is great, but the actual animations are stiff, especially action sequences
- Plot and world building is decent, although the first 5 minutes of exposition was unnecessary and should have been revealed throughout the season
- Scottish is a surprisingly great accent for elves
- Humour has completely fallen flat thus far
- Dialogue doesn't really flow

I'll definitely continue watching but I was expecting more. I'm still dreaming about how much better the show would be if given to a Japanese studio like WIT.

It's dope! Really enjoyed seas 1. However....

I can see the show dividing a lot of people:
- animation is great during action, yet real noticeably framey in chill scenes
- humor is corny as hell, yet was endearing by the end
- world building has potential, yet real expositiony
- moment to moment logic is questionable
- tone shifts drastically

I think the positives make the show worthwhile: characters, art, music, action. I mean it's a kid's show right? lol.

I don't envy any of the community relations people once the shipping wars get going.

Watched the first four episodes. It's pretty good! I can see myself getting into this, and the framerate stuff, although very noticeable in some scenes, didn't bother me nearly as much as I expected. Can't wait to continue it :)

After the huge letdown that was The Legend of Korra, I thought Ehasz was the secret sauce that had made Airbender so great. What a massive bummer to find out that The Dragon Prince is downright terrible. Even setting aside the framerate of the animation, the script is just lousy - with terrible pacing (it takes 3 full episodes for the heroes' journey to even start), constant telling rather than showing, cringey humor, bland and stupid characters, and just nothing particularly interesting for those characters to do.

I don't know if development of the show was troubled, or if things had to get reworked for budgetary reasons or something, but the final product just feels shallow and empty - not what you would expect from the lead writer of Airbender.

And I'm assuming the show isn't doing too well because I couldn't find it anywhere on US Netflix until I went to actually search for it manually. Not a good sign.

Fiance and I watched it all. Overall enjoyed it. Definitely looking forward to more. Hopefully Season 2 won't be too far off. 9 episodes is anemic.

The animation confused us. We aren't sure if it was a stylistic choice or a budget choice.

edit: just had to check, for everyone comparing it to Avatar in a negative light, 9 episodes into TLAB was Team Avatar going to the Fire Temple to learn about Sozins comet. I'm not sure I was even that hooked on TLAB at that point. I think Dragon Prince did a pretty good job given the time allotted.

edit2: yeah we had to manually search for it as well. Either someone forgot to add it to the new Queue or Netflix is trying to bury it. We don't watch a ton of "kids" stuff so maybe that confused the "algorithm".

Huh, you know the promotion of The Dragon Prince on Netflix has been really odd. I actually thought to check and it's like the only Netflix show not listed on the Netflix Originals tab of the main page; it's weird because normally Netflix trips over themselves to highlight new Original Content™, to the point that I can't avoid seeing it even if I wanted to. I don't think it's a conspiracy so much as a bug, because I did get a big splash page for TLR when I first launched Netflix today... though I can't find it anywhere other than my history / Recently Added now.

Ohmygodtheanimationistoochoppyicanteven:

Yeah, yeah. The show attempts to emulate hand-drawn 2D animation by producing CG animation on threes, or 6fps. Though this technique has sometimes worked decently (See the Guilty Gear Xrd games or the upcoming Into the Spider-Verse), in this case it has had a less than stellar reception, to put it mildly. If you're one of the people who can't stand it at all, playing the video at 1.25 speed seems to help somewhat. You can do that with desktop extensions for Firefox and Chrome.

Dear Entire Animation Industry,

Please animate fully on twos again. It just looks better. And never go back. Unless you're Studio Trigger doing crazy shit
I want my 90's renaissance era back(Ducktales, Batman TAS, Animaniacs) and I want my anime looking more fluid.

Yours Truly,

Me

Four episodes in and I find it pretty promising. The animation, while initially the biggest turn-off, as turned out to be enjoyable and well done when it counts. The characters have been interesting, unique, and usually compelling in their own ways.

Amaya was a really cool surprise, and a great example of a character that is super far from a normal fantasy cliche, which I love! I also like that the Viren, while generally played as the evil vizier, has that scene with Harrow when you can see he is seriously trying to help and make a sacrifice but Harrow is actually to one to overreact there. It makes me think there's more to come with that character, which I'm excited for.

Agreed! Not done yet but I hope they can do more without too long of a wait so that it can stay hot to get the best chance at getting a sizeable run, if this first season does well.

Haven't seen this yet, but that animation reminds me of the new Berserk.

I suppose it's all subjective, since some are complaining about the framerate really bothering them, but I'd say this looks far better than that, plus the other big problem to me with that show was lots of awful and confusing camera angles to go with the framerate problems, meanwhile Dragon Prince has very good ones, plus cool character model animation touches, and also the art/art style/shading here looks lightyears better as you can tell from some of the beautiful shots of it.

It's also pretty cool seeing this is what Justin Richmond has gone on to direct next.

edit: just had to check, for everyone comparing it to Avatar in a negative light, 9 episodes into TLAB was Team Avatar going to the Fire Temple to learn about Sozins comet. I watched the first few episodes and I really like it. I definitely feel like it's filling that Avatar void, although we'll see if I ultimately like it as much once I finish the season. I like all the main characters a lot so far, and the story seems interesting, even if they explained probably a little too much in the opening of the first episode. I also really like that Callum is voiced by the same voice actor as Sokka. I thought for sure Claudia was Zelda Williams but it looks like it's not her. I also love Rayla's Scottish accent.

The animation was my biggest question mark going in to watch this, and so far I say it's pretty hit or miss. Some things like action scenes look great, and I really like the backgrounds and environment. The main issue is the framerate in a slower scene, it does bother me a lot but it's not a show killer. There are also certain things that look awkward, like hands for some reason, and there is a scene where Callum and his Father hug, and Callum's face looks weird as hell. I think for the most part the animation works though, which is a relief, but those weird framerate scenes and awkward looking things are distracting, unfortunately. I would love for this show to have the Avatar/Korra animation, but hopefully, this way is cheaper and easier, which I'll take if it means more season at a quicker pace.

Just finished it. Fell in love with it pretty quick. The art design is phenomenal. Full of great character work, big setups for growth/mysteries to be solved across however many books they have planned/how many Netflix damn well better let them flesh out. Main characters are all interesting and their core dynamic works well. Also a huge surprise on how many interesting side characters there are. General Amaya is an instant favorite. Her design, her handicap and the strength that pours out of that, who she's a foil for, everything about her screams something original. Soren and Claudia are fun charismatic characters. Fairly interested in how those two will interact with the core group over time. Hell, even some of the episode centric characters you meet are seriously interesting like that moustache dude with the dagger. I could spend some time with just that dude for a bit. Concerning the antagonist, Viren gravitates too quickly between a very well worn villain trope to have a bit of nuance of reasoning for what he's doing. I hope they err on the latter over time. Also, the show's ratio of protagonists to antagonists is too far on one side. Definitely, need more interesting bad guys over time.

The world is detailed and the mythology leaves some gigantic story arcs that I hope to see. Political scene was detailed and set up quickly, and instantly provided a launching off point for the story to kick in quickly. There's some interesting world building underpinning mythos that parallels between the Last Airbender and this, with how magic is separated into different schools, versus how bending works with the different elements and they are slowly fleshing out the rules of how someone can begin to learn how the magic is used in this world via Callum.

Animation issues barely registered for me. Some of the action worked really well, some of it was just ok. But so much of this worked so well for me that it became negligible. I hope they manage to improve it as they go along because they have some fantastic character designs and capabilities and I'd love to see what they can do as they develop.

The final episode ended a bit flat for me, mostly because there are so many threads left hanging in the wind that I was disappointed that that was where it ended, but I guess that's a bit of a positive, and a bit negative. Wish they had tied up a bit more before moving to next book.

Anyway, for me, this definitely fits the description of being a spiritual successor to The Last Airbender. Its got a whole lot of heart, the art, the writing, the world building, and the earnestness of it all, all of it reminds me of TLA/Korra.

IN for whole lot more hopefully.

The designs of the characters and the world is fantastic. Too bad I can't get over the inconsistent framerate. Whenever there's not a fast action scene, rveryevery look so bad.

I hope they just up the fps and keep it consistent in S2.
