I'm midway through the game and I have to say there are not much games that have me sucked into the world of DQXI aka Erdea. What's great about this game is that though it's traditional turn based, the whole world is realized and beautiful, it's the kind of world I've been seeking for in modern JRPGs: fully explorable with side quests and big towns.

What's also great about this game is that it has charm. From all the DQs I've played, this probably has the most charm in terms of characters and NPCs.

Also there's a lot of things to do in this game. I've read that it takes 70-90 hours to platinum this game but there seems to be a lot in this game that I can explore.

What are your thoughts on this game, Era? Personally this is probably my top DQ game, next to DQV.

It's the one PS4 game I plan to purchase until like February or so. (I'm spending so much on a Switch setup, haha.) It looks gorgeous and I keep hearing wonderful things about everything except the music. I'm excited.

Still waiting on the 3DS version. I'm sure an official western release or fan patch will hit any day now. Oh this post is from 2025.

I thought XI was really charming, but in terms of extra stuff, maybe VII was more engaging with all of the extra class nonsense.

These threads really make me want to bite the bullet and get a copy of the game.

I didn't really like 7 on 3DS and just couldn't get into 8 but I love JRPGs.

I'm not finished it yet, Probably like 60% through, but it is already one of the best RPGs I have ever played. It is outstanding.

2 and 6 are the ones I like the least. 8 is really charming, probably my favorite cast in the series. I love how 1,3, 4, 5,and 9 play. And I both love and can't stand 7.

The only DQ games that I loved are V and XI. I highly recommend it! The music may not be as nice but the presentation of DQXI is what I've been seeking for in modern JRPGs.

You're good people, Ultros. I'm still only about eight hours in due to work limiting my playtime, but I really really love this game.

DQ8 isn't even top 5 DQ games imo.

Yeah, VIII is still the only one (except XI yet) that I haven't been able to get though, and I bought the game the day it came out back in 2005 (and again on 3DS). I love the feeling of grand adventure, but something about it loses me. I'm sure I'll get through it eventually.

My favorite is still (the original version of) VII. To be honest, XI hasn't totally grabbed me yet either in the ways my favorites in the series (III-VII, IX) did; though I expect that would change if I were able to play the 3DS version.

It's great in the sense that it feels like a 16 bit JRPG that made the jump to current gen without sacrificing anything. The world is huge, beautiful and endlessly detailed. Fantastic characters and well balanced gameplay so far for me (about 12 hours in).

Only complaint is I just wish the music was better. Not even really talking about MIDI vs orchestral, but coming off games like Persona 5, Xenoblade 2 and Octopath, the OST is pretty bland for me. There's not much of an edge or style to it.

It's a solid game with a lot of good things going for it. It's also downright archaic in some respects though, maybe too much so.

I bought it on PC buy my progress is slow, too much shit releasing (or in the case of WoW, updating) and all my time seems to go elsewhere. Have enjoyed what I have played, though the first hour or so is kind of dull.

Only played VIII and this, 40 hours in and this one is absolutely amazing and can't get enough of it! I just wish your part was walking along with you.

Towns are well designed and I remember every single on of them unlike many many RPGs where they miss the mark with basic design and architecture. Easily one of my top RPGs along with FFXII for me.

I want more remakes of old games, I don't think I can go back and play the earlier ones, unlike say Zelda or Final Fantasy.

Yeah I should have specified armor. About 20 hours in only able to change between the original outfit and the iconic bandana one

I've gotten around 3 changes for the MC. Some accessories also provide additional changes like the Traveller's Hood.

It's the supporting characters that have more changes though.

Silent protagonist really brings down the game imo.

Sad scene, exciting scene, despair situation and he just staring like a log

What surprised me...

+ How the Towns are detailed and big... it puts to shame every other JRPG I played before.
+ How some music arrangement are fabulous.
+ How the overworld even being linear give you sensation of huge exploration.

What was expected and delivered with Dragon Quality...

+ Fantastic cast.
+ Charming NPCs.
+ Awesome writing and dialogs.
+ Challenging battles with Draconic option to make enemies harder.
+ Extensive variety of charming enemies.
+ How polished and well done each part of the game is... it feels compete.

I go go on but it truly shines ahead any other JRPGs in the last two generations... what amazing job the team behind it did.

It is a joy to play it and made me realize how some titles that I initially found great fall to average due at how starving I was for great JRPGs... a recent example was Octopath Traveled but I can list several games this and last gen.

Loving it.

Yeah I have been really impressed so far by the attention to detail in the architecture so far. It feels very thought out and the interiors look fantastic.

Oh yeah, see, this is exactly the sort of post that's convinced me to pick this game up soon. As a long-time lover of JRPGs, this sounds like ad ream.

Dragon Quest is my all time favorite game series and this game easily makes it into my top 3 DQ games along with with IV and VIII.

Played the game for 72+ hours over a 12 day span. Easily my GOTY and one of my favorite games ever.

If you've ever enjoyed JRPGs at any point in your life you need to play this game.

I haven't finished the game, but I could see it being one of the best JRPGs this gen. Out of the games I've played in the series(which isn't a lot), I would put it second to V.

This generation has a lot of good JRPGs, much much more so than last generation.
This post made me realize that a lot of JRPGs series I like/used to like went down hill either this generation or the last.

A little over 30 hours in and I agree.

Not only has it been ages since I've played a console JRPG, it's been even longer since I've spent literally all day playing one.

I have been looking for a way to put the feeling I get when playing this game into words and I think this is it. Everything feels so well crafted and every new arc in the story I am constantly impressed by the presentation.

Also every part of the game has gameplay variation and doesn't get caught in any kind of formula. Every section feels unique.

What are some examples of y'all's favorite JRPGs from this generation? Curious to see what I've missed. :D

From what I've played this gen (I don't play strategy RPGs so that's out):

- Dragon Quest Builders is one of my favorite game this gen too, not exactly an RPG but it's one of the best games for this generation
- NieR: Automata
- Tales of Berseria (let's say it's one of the better Tales games after Vesperia)
- Persona 5 (though I like 4 more)
- Final Fantasy XV might be controversial here but hey, I really liked it

Sweet, I've yet to play most of these. Thanks!
