People said he was trolling in his discord and got everything wrong about the Direct. After Isabelle was revealed, he deleted his twitter and left the discord channels. We can just ignore him completely from now on, dude was probably just someone with access to the E3 demo that wanted 5 minutes of fame.
That's probably how most "leakers" are. They come into some info and decide to milk it for all it's worth. That's why I make it a point never to trust people who get one thing right.

I'm not sure why ya'll are representing "BOX THEORY" as something extremely complex and absurd thing (also lol, why the fuck we gotta name everything).

The characters are indeed broken down into groupings of 9, with every other grouping being present on the visible side. That's a fact and it's not some completely absurd nonsense that requires squinting and "Half-Life 3 confirmed"-tier math. You just have to... look at the officially provided numbers and look at the box right there. From there it's not exactly a jump to say that the other missing exactly 50% of the character list in exactly interchanging groupings is on the other side. Again, this isn't some absurd leap with nonsense-math it's just... how the box is designed. Which leaves one character on each side, and each side has exactly one block of 8 where the missing 36th character from each side would be. Again, not a leap, because... each side would fit exactly 36 and each side has 35 atm... And the block on the left includes Ryu (Ken), and the block on the right is with all the new characters (character 69).

It's all extremely clear that this is exactly how the box, as it currently is, was deliberately designed to be configured. Like, there's really not much room for argument unless you think the Echo space is for say, Cloud instead of Ryu. So I'm not sure how this is being deemed as "lol box math" (there's not really any math beyond 36-35 = 1...) Now could the box change to fit more? Absolutely? Could there just be more on the back? For sure. Could they just leave off some entirely? Definitely. So no one should take it as a hard rule that there's absolutely only these characters we see, no. But the current box is 100% designed to represent the characters as described, which doesn't exactly seem arbitrary.
Well said. I don't believe it's the final box.

I think the doubt comes from the fact that it comes out a month early
Right, so like I said in that post, it's entirely plausible that the box does not represent every character that will be in the game. So I guess if "BOX THEORY" is rigidly defined as "there's absolutely no way there's no more than 1 echo and 1 new character because the box", then yeah, that's silly. But to say there's not very clear and deliberate patterns in how the box was designed is also silly.

At the very least, I would say that this 100% confirms Ken, and makes Echoes for any other currently known character very unlikely.

Also, I personally believe this is the final box (minus Isabelle and character 69 on the side we view), if only because there's no reason to deliberately plan it in this way if it's not at least intended to be. But there's no reason to believe characters can't be on the back or entirely unlisted, so that doesn't mean much more.

You still play as Snake during crucial portions of MGS2 tho, and the main reason they probably gave him the cypher is because there's never really been a tool or item that could realistically be used for vertical elevation in the MGS series. That was a concession made out of necessity rather than conscious limitation.

Also the bolded is literally all I'm arguing here. As far as personal opinion goes, weapons like the Shotgun and Samurai's Edge are part of what make Resident Evil so memorable to me, but regardless of that opinion I don't particularly feel strongly for debating an RE moveset because I don't expect that kind of compromise to be something Sakurai would want to settle for unless they had an arsenal that could pass without it - such as Snake, who has most of his games actively discourage you from using lethal weaponry in favor of sneaky tactics.

The lethal weaponry thing is just nonsense when Snake is using mortars, rocket launchers, c4, grenade launchers, land mines, hand grenades and slashing at people with a combat knife.
Even ignoring the gimmicks introduced by REmake that could be interesting, RE2 and 4 have more than enough options and you can bet if Claire wasn't in, he'd also have the bow gun as a nod to her.

Yeah, I was assuming Box Theory meant only those two. I guess we should call it Box Law instead, while Box Theory is just the idea that we'll get at least Incineroar and Ken

I can see the Prince from Katamari Damacy as a realistic newcomer more than ever after the Direct.

EDIT: The creator of Katamari is against the idea of motion controls (he says "they're nothing but a diversion created for business reasons") so I doubt he's at all involved with this remaster :-/

We need a GUST (Grand Unified Smash Theory), it's so hard keeping track of the box, music, chair, and other theories. Hopefully some Smash fans at CERN can whip something up and get it peer reviewed before the final direct in November

There's a couple of large assumptions for this "box theory"

- First off, one must assume that the box art isn't final. This might not seem like a big leap, but it is. The special edition comes out in a month and a half. The boxes are being produced RIGHT NOW, and the assembly line for those boxes would be place #1 for a full roster leak if 100% of characters were on the box. I can't find a page anywhere that mentions that the box art isn't final, either, which is generally on placeholders. I'm also not at all convinced the entire roster will be known by November 2. That is over a month away from release, so we'd get no new Smash news for an entire month? No way.
- Second off, it assumes the back half of the box has characters on it. We don't know that. It could actually spill onto the back for all we know.

Well, sakurai said he wanted every character revealed before launch. He wants to avoid leaks.

Was there a release date given for the special edition, because this comes with the game. Not a code or anything...
the special edition switch, which is not what this is, is november 2

Yeah...I think folks have it confused with the Switch and the accessories. No way the special edition with the game will be available in November.

Ah, that. Sorry I misread.

Yeah, I think that's just some wannabe leaker's fanfiction.

Huh? He's the most likely he's ever been in smash history right now with all the stones alligning.
The only person that's supposedly leaked his playable existence managed to pants and discredit himself. The moon being its own AT also isn't evidence when there's already precedent for an AT's seemingly arbitrary removal in the next game.

Thanks Kirbivore

I'm not sure what to make of his tweet. I read it several times, but don't see it as any hint but an observation.

That in hindsight, no one is backing up Bamco part. I feel the only reason Square was commented on is because their side of support was lacking and even had a thread. Not so much Namco.

Review copies are a thing and someone is bound to leak before release. And the box would look off balanced to just add a row

The DMC people especifically said No Dante In Smash.

This is not a case of "no comment" or "we don't talk about rumours". That's as clear cut as it comes for me.

I have yet to see a "art not final" note on any special edition pre-order pages.

As far as I'm aware, that's the final box. RIP Isabelle, guess you're not in the game!

It's not lethal weaponry Sakurai is opposed to. It's "realistic" weaponry. Explosions and weapons derived from such are more commonly associated with cartoon violence, so weapons like rocket launchers and bombs are usually fair game. Realistic guns, ballistic firearms and shorthand blades however lean more towards "realistic violence", most likely because there's a bigger element of brutality associated with them. And I'm not the one who makes the rules on that; that's usually how the rating boards judges the level of violence in games. Sakurai employs a similar metric to keep the game's subsequent age rating in check.

At this point DLC discussion is going to be more interesting than newcomer discussion

Like for newcomers you just pick 1-6 of these

  • Ken
  • Shadow
  • Geno
  • Dante
  • Incineroar :-3
  • Elma
  • Steve
And add your pet favourite if you want to be cheeky.

DLC? Those horizons are much more open.

Since we're talking about Imran again I'm gonna quote this old post. It's not just the tweet that ought to be taken as a hint - although this post was more about how it's unlikely Geno would be the Square Enix rep.

The only reason Geno feels "likely" is because most of us here have no compunction of thinking conservatively.

Also I think it's time we cleared up some misconceptions about Imran since we love bringing him up when talking leaks. The big thing we always point back to is his tweet that implies Square and Bamco are getting reps, but none of us ever talk about some of the additional context such as his Era posts.

In the topic "Square dropped the ball on Smash characters"
https://www.resetera.com/threads/square-enix-dropped-the-ball-on-smash-bros-characters.60782/

In the topic "The strange case of Monster Hunter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate", in response to a post that there are more characters left to reveal
https://www.resetera.com/threads/th...r-content-in-super-smash-bros-ultimate.60845/

The implication here is that whatever's in store in terms of rep has to be the motherload for him to be so tauntingly coy.

(As an aside it's worth pointing out that he did make that tweet the other day about Tom Nook and making a random Devil May Cry reference, and the above post was made in a Capcom-related thread. Seeing how much of a non-sequitur that tweet is, who knows, it might even be a hint at Dante.)

Now a lot of people might be thinking "hey, this must mean Geno's finally happening". Having said that, this post from all the way back in March after Smash's announcement, when it was clear that he and a few others had already known of Ridley, is the only time Imran has ever commented on these forums on Geno.
https://www.resetera.com/threads/su...confirmed-link-has-botw-design.28244/page-287

This doesn't necessarily have to be a hint at anything, it was early after Smash's announcement and it's unlikely that every leaker in the know would've been privy to the roster at this point. Plus this was a comment done years after most of us have already read an interview saying that Sakurai wanted Geno back in Brawl. That said it's pretty clear that the way Imran commented about the character, he actually doesn't have that much of a high opinion on the character himself.

Which leads me to believe that it's very doubtful that Imran would be so teasing about a character he seemingly doesn't care about. If there's a Square Enix rep in play, I don't think Geno is it.

I mean, we're inevitably getting a second Smash Direct either October or November, and they'll have plenty to talk about without stuffing it full of character reveals, so there only being a handful left makes sense.

If there were any more, they would've revealed a few outside of Directs by now (echoes especially).

Basically. They could just ignore it. Same for another very requested character, but I don't want to open this pandora box.

People better like Dragon Quest around here...

Think the DLC characters will be very 3rd party focused, like they were for Smash 4?

So it doesn't matter that much since the point of "this is the final box, which would be missing characters anyway" is the one ned is pushing but just to clear it up

The special edition, this thing

DMC4SE coming to Switch was also part of the original Dante leak.

Either way, as a newcomer he makes a lot of sense. He's a popular third party character, iconic, would be cool to be able to have Bayonetta and Dante in the same game for the first time and able to fight each other, and makes sense for the third party from a synergy point of view with a new game coming out shortly.

It all adds up pretty well. And most importantly he has fantastic moveset potential and could be really fun.
