For example, with my boyfriend I started out with the tried and true (and cliché) "baby", which over time morphed into "babby", which reached its final evolution as "babsy".

I've had other pet names evolve similarly over time in previous relationships, and I wonder if it's a common thing. Anyone else experience anything like this?

Mostly Boo. Which starting out mockingly and kinda just became the defacto. We'll spice it up with some Boo Bear or Boo Bear Baudelaire.

Sweetie for about 3 years. And then at some point I just stopped because I didn't like it. So I started calling her "Wife" and I've been doing that for about 10 years now.

At the start it was just baby.

Then it became otter after a fun anecdote we had with a mascot (a giant otter) of a water park that was hitting on me. :lol

'Hon' has been consistent since the start.

We've added 'love', 'sweets' and 'ling', ie. Darling.

Otherwise, I've always just called her as Beautiful or Lovely. She hates being called 'babe', though. But she doesn't mind 'Freckles'.

Thinking about it, if it's just us two, I don't remember the last time I called her by her name.

For some reason early in our relationship my girlfriend would call me "babaganoosh". Now that we've been together several years, are more comfortable with each other and have kids and stuff she just calls me a "rotten bastard" because of my farts.

When we were dating we would refer to each-other as Boyfriend/Girlfriend. After marriage we call each-other Husband/Wife. Outside of that, it's typically Honey, or Hon'

I don't think I had a pet name for him when we started going out.
For as long as I can remember, he's been my sunshine. He's a Florida native.

I've never used one. I can't say "baby" without feeling like a monumental dork. I also tried saying "hon" once and it was very weird.

Some how or another I started calling her poopy. She hated it so it stuck lol. Then I started calling her boom boom, which is slang for taking a poop. She also hated that... so it stuck lol. Then I shortened it to bo bo. I still call her that and she calls me hobo. I find hobo hilarious because I stay at home with the kids and don't work... kinda bumming it lol.

We call each other 'bro', but she and I sometimes use different variants. Also we have a billion other pet names we call each other - but in front of friends and family, we normally just use 'sweetheart'.

When I was in a relationship we called each other racial slurs as terms of endearment. I think that's the only things we said that would qualify.

It went from Chick, to cuter version, to Chicken (she was afraid of ice skating and roller coasters, we've done both now) and is officially a hen.

My girlfriend and I had established Smooch for her and Scruff for me (on account of my intermittent shaving habits).

Her (at the time) 5 year old daughter after hearing me call her mom that a few times decided her mother must be Little Smooch and I must be Big Smooch. So now my girlfriend and I call each other Little and Big Smooch in front of her, and I use the nickname Tiny Smooch or Tiny for her daughter.

Baby/Babe >> BB8 and BB69 >> B >> BB.

Also saying "damn, Gina!" (after the tv show Martin.. I have no idea why...) led to use calling each other Gina almost all the time. That turned into Regina, Neutragina, and Tina.

We have no pet names, I say hey or his name and he does the same. We never call each other honey, sweetie or any of those names.

You don't realize there's an evolution beyond that final evolution.

I usually call my wife weird stuff like chuck or chuckles, porky, porcupine, schnoops, Shmosby (from how I met your mother), sweets, really just whatever.
