I think you've had more than enough Avatar

All I want now are Octolings or some other Splatoon character. There's so much good stuff already that I am satisfied. Rex/Elma, or characters for one of Nintendo's unrepresented franchises would be cool as well.

Geno just never made sense to me - a side character from a single game that did 3 million (good, but not amazing) 22 years ago? Why would anyone outside of the Smash community care?

Alright, I noticed something really interesting with the box art.

The missing characters are not arbitrary, but are part of a clear pattern based off their character numbers.

01 - Mario
02 - Donkey Kong
03 - Link
04 - Samus
04e - Dark Samus
05 - Yoshi
06 - Kirby
07 - Fox
08 - Pikachu

17 - Zelda
18 - Dr. Mario
19 - Pichu
20 - Falco
21 - Marth
21e - Lucina
22 - Young Link
23 - Ganondorf
24 - Mewtwo

32 - Ike
33/34/35 - Pokémon Trainer - Squirtle/Ivysaur/Charizard
36 - Diddy Kong
37 - Lucas
38 - Sonic
39 - King Dedede
40 - Olimar
41 - Lucario
42 - R.O.B.

54 - Palutena
55 - Pac-Man
56 - Robin
57 - Shulk
58 - Bowser Jr.
59 - Duck Hunt
60 - Ryu
61 - Cloud

The gaps represent the characters that are listed on the box. What's happening here is that the characters have been broken down into groupings of 9, with every other grouping being present on the side of the box. Pokémon Trainer is grouped together, just as the Mii fighters are on the right. The last block of missing characters is actually only 8, which says to me that one of them should have an Echo Fighter. Ryu just so happens to be in that block, so that leaves one slot in his block for Ken. If each side has 36 character icons and no characters go unrepresented, that means we likely have one new character and Ken remaining.

That would be 2 if we were to believe the box art is final (minus Isabelle and the final 2 characters)

68 - 4 if we count Pokemon trainer and Miis as one + 6 for echoes. That puts us at 72. I don't think the box is a good gauge since they can manipulate the number of rows in the final version to fit in how many characters they want.

Isn't DMC a niche series? Why would Dante be in the game from a 3rd party when there are so many other bigger series? Plus Capcom is accounted for.

I think it's 2 characters. Isabelle has to go on one side or the other leaving 2 blanks

This might be it if your post is right.

It's not that small, but not that big as well. Don't think it will be in, personally.

My secret hope is a leaker was listening in to higher ups discussing smash characters and he thought they said Dante but they actually said Shantae.

Gonna be funny if Shadow, one of the main echoes almost everyone was sure would be in, doesn't make it. Also kinda sad since I'd like another Sonic character.

Being a multi million seller is barely niche. But people were calling Isabelle a niche character so I guess everything is niche.

DMC the original game sells about 3 million per game, which is great, but not big compared to many of the options left over from franchises that have actually existed on previous Nintendo consoles, such as Resident Evil, Kingdom Hearts, Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest, etc.

Not when most of their movesets are dictated by realistic firearms and shorthand combat blades.

So like MGS?

Sales aren't everything. Character popularity and legacy are also factors, along with things like the director being in contact with other developers like with Kojima.

More Capcom is unlikely, but Resident Evil and Monster Hunter are way more likely than any other Capcom IP. Also, comparing Bayonetta, a character with two Nintendo funded/published games, with third party franchises with no relation to Nintendo is pretty weird.

I don't get how you got to that number. In terms of roster slots (counting echoes and count Mii Fighters and Pokemon Trainer as one slot) we're already at 70, and the box has 72 slots for characters; so doesn't that suggest that there are only two more characters left? That definitely isn't happening, so I don't really think it means much.

If i'm really stupid and missing something obvious, feel free to correct me.

Nope you're right
People just reading too much into stuff as usual
We're getting at least 2 more unique characters (I think 3, but absolutely no more than 4) and we're also getting several more echo fighters. There's no way they introduced 3 echo fighters in August and then stopped announcing them. They would've kept it going

I will say that it's entirely plausible not every character is represented on the sides, or that the box will be reconfigured and this is just a really weird placeholder (stranger things have happened). And of course DLC is guaranteed.

But yeah, as it stands, the evidence points towards exactly one new character and one new Echo, with the Echo being almost 100% likely to be Ken. I fully expect the final character, if it indeed is, to be an absolute megaton at this point though. It's either Banjo or Steve (I know a lot of folks here won't consider Steve a megaton, but he is).

Snake was designed in Smash around his hand-to-hand combat and explosives with Sakurai consciously excluding his conventional firearms. Fittingly enough because that represents the tactical espionage element of MGS the most as opposed to the game's gun combat.

"they have no viable moveset" was the same reasoning against Isabelles inclusion.
RE4's Leon was doing suplexes and jumping kicks, so its not like having normals is an issue.

Theres no stopping them from using moves outside of one game in the series too, so give him the REmake stungun as a counter or something.

Could you imagine if NOT ONLY was Incineroar the last unique newcomer but also the final number was "69"
