Yes I know there's time and resources and such, but I think Isabelle will be the only semi clone added. I mean, you don't introudce echo fighters as a concept, and make a bunch of semi clones. It doesn't make sense from that perspective.

Isabelle fully deserved her spot.

Anyways, I think the whole classifcation of echo fighters is deeply flawed. Sakurai I feel is the person who would not add a playable character only for the sake of adding a playable character.
It wouldn't be a bunch, though. 2, maybe 3, that's counting Isabelle. There's really not a lot of options, most would obviously end up being echoes.

Isabelle is the last character. Sakurai doesn't want the inevitable 69 memes. He saw what some people did to Isabelle and he's disappointed.

It's more a matter of no one really being left in Square's catalog who's been desired by the Smash community if Dragon Quest ends up not panning out, though I think Sakurai will try for DQ first and foremost.

Crono isn't happening. Aya Brea isn't happening. Fei Fong Wong isn't happening. Another FF rep isn't happening. Who's left if not Geno, who has cult appeal, Sakurai's own affection for the character, and no one else really getting in his way?

Well, what if you are wrong? Let not being dismissive of characters because we doesn't know who get in or not.

Are you implying Daisy is obscure and has never came back for 20 years?

She's not super duper massive like Isabelle or Link or Inkling or Mario, but she is certainly a notable Nintendo character that people appreciate. Heck, if she wasn't notable, she wouldn't be the first echo fighter revealed or conceived.

Well, like I said, Daisy is a perfect marketing character to turn into an echo fighter to convince the fans to accept the concept. It works perfectly and see how many people quickly accepted the idea of echo fighters.

Sakurai and his cat parted ways and he now prefers dogs. Sorry.

What if he realized that we need to counter Isabelle with a feline so he decided to add Incineroar at the end. Also his cat threatened to leave him if he didn't add any cat character this time!

Only if he's the 69th reveal.

You're so naughty.

Anything happen over the past 12 hours?

All I heard was that Verge doubled down on some claims.

Thinking about the vast majority of potential future ff reps is amazing. X with switch support man I'd love Yuna as a fighter but that's just wishful thinking right now.

I mean, if you're talking about importance to their respective series, then sure. But that's not appeal. Appeal (and you even specified "on a broader scale") particularly targets the popularity of a character. And Daisy far and away is one of the most popular characters in Ultimate's newcomers.

Nah. Memoryman was an amplifier for sure, but Daisy's generally not a very popular character among gaming enthusiast circles for some reason.

Consider this, when you consider the appeal of each playable Mario character, Geno doesnt even hope to match up with anyone. The cameos are pretty faithful to how Geno is. Just there.

Sakurai is respected and has quite a pull. To suggest it woulid be easier to get Geno is a sign of lack of faith in his bargaining power.

Why wouldn't any of those other options happen?

Aya Brea would make the least sense given that Parasite Eve has no connection to a Nintendo platform. But Crono is the lead of a classic SNES RPG that's seen multiple re-releases. Fei Fong Wong is the star of the very first Xeno-game. And there's nothing to stop another Final Fantasy character from appearing, either.

And this isn't a question of what's desired by "the Smash community." God, I'd hate to see a roster that was based entirely on the whims of the Smash community.

I mean, K.Rool and Ridley got in for being desired by the Smash community. Meanwhile Inkling and Isabelle are vastly more popular characters from beloved franchises who got in because of the weight their names carry. If Dragon Quest gets in it'd be because it's one of the most iconic franchises in Japanese gaming history.

Anyway it's pretty clear Cloud is the only Final Fantasy character we'll see because all the content come from FF7. Aya, Crono and Fei would have to hitch a ride on what got K.Rool and Ridley into the game, that being an overwhelming amount of support from a passionate fanbase, and I don't think they've received it as much as Geno has for the last decade.

I mean you basically just said "There's no one to get in Geno's way if Sakurai decides not to pick anyone else".

I'm saying the characters I mentioned don't have a chance in hell. Geno's only real competition, if he has a chance at all, is Dragon Quest.

Pretty sure that's partially because Memoryman wasn't the first Daisy fan to poison the well, just that everyone forgot about the previous ones after he stepped up to the plate.

But the Smash fandom does have a lot of people with priorities doubled over backwards so people just plain being edgelords probably factors massively too. Like you have one or two exceptionally badly behaved supporters and Daisy is the devil, but half the freaking K. Rool fandom functions out of pure hatred and it's boys will be boys? LOL OK sure Smash fandom, suuuure.

I don't see any reason to swap out Geno; he's the most likely Square Enix newcomer (which is definitely happening if you believe Imran and Vergeben).
The only reason Geno feels "likely" is because most of us here have no compunction of thinking conservatively.

Also I think it's time we cleared up some misconceptions about Imran since we love bringing him up when talking leaks. The big thing we always point back to is his tweet that implies Square and Bamco are getting reps, but none of us ever talk about some of the additional context such as his Era posts.

The implication here is that whatever's in store in terms of rep has to be the motherload for him to be so tauntingly coy.

(As an aside it's worth pointing out that he did make that tweet the other day about Tom Nook and making a random Devil May Cry reference, and the above post was made in a Capcom-related thread. Seeing how much of a non-sequitur that tweet is, who knows, it might even be a hint at Dante.)

Now a lot of people might be thinking "hey, this must mean Geno's finally happening". Having said that, this post from all the way back in March after Smash's announcement, when it was clear that he and a few others had already known of Ridley, is the only time Imran has ever commented on these forums on Geno.

What if Sakurai doesn't want to add Geno

This doesn't necessarily have to be a hint at anything, it was early after Smash's announcement and it's unlikely that every leaker in the know would've been privy to the roster at this point. Plus this was a comment done years after most of us have already read an interview saying that Sakurai wanted Geno back in Brawl. That said it's pretty clear that the way Imran commented about the character, he actually doesn't have that much of a high opinion on the character himself.

Which leads me to believe that it's very doubtful that Imran would be so teasing about a character he seemingly doesn't care about. If there's a Square Enix rep in play, I don't think Geno is it.

-Moon Assist Trophy not being summoned by Skull Kid makes zero sense
-Young Link's Final Smash not being shown yet
-Ramblin' Mushroom replacing Skull Kid's assist trophy gimmick from Smash 4
-Majora's Mask 3D releasing while Sakurai was drafting his picks for Ultimate
-He's one of the most popular Zelda characters

etc etc
These are good points (including the room Sakurai was sitting in), and I'm still convinced Skull Kid will be a character because of them, but is the Mushroom enemy really a point in Skull Kid's favor? Shadow and the Timer item debuted in the same game, and they both have the same function.

Well, this is the most I can see the roster being, but this is very unlikely:
  1. Skull Kid
  2. Geno
  3. Isaac
  4. Incineroar
  5. Dixie Kong
  6. Elma
  7. Chorus Kids
  8. Style Savvyist
  9. KOS-MOS
  10. Shadow
  11. Ken
I expect us to get 2 new echoes and 2 new uniques for 4 total, and 13 for Ultimate as a whole.

as much as we are aware that Incineroar is more likely to happens so.

are people going to finally accept that Incineroar will be in Smash Bros?

I'm there. Took me a sec but I'm there. I think it will be cool to see a character type that is very much a "fighter" combined with the elemental and special abilities that being a Pokémon comes along with. I guess Greninja is kind of like that, being a Ninja and all.

I don't feel like there's anyone iconic left who's going to get people to splash the cash. Except the diehard smash fans who will pay for everything. Also I think for Disney, Bethesda and Microsoft, it makes more sense for them to demand a share of the DLC price.
I mean, there's still recent Nintendo games to add (ARMS, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Pokémon Gen 8, etc.).

Here is my remaining list:

Captain Toad
Skull Kid
Waluigi
ARMS rep
Paper Mario

And the only acceptable third party characters:
Professor Layton
Rayman

Any "smaller" Nintendo character is worthy of DLC just for being a Nintendo character in their own all stars game. Japan is also 1/3 of Nintendo's sales and there Nintendo is the mainstream almost alone, third parties don't get even close to their market share (and western third parties are almost all unknown).

Thinking Rex or Spring Man won't be DLC is beyond silly. More Switch owners will buy them than characters from games that sold less on Switch/aren't relevant in Japan.

At the very least half the DLC won't be veterans again, since all the characters are returning, I do think Rex and Spring Man would be DLC, but I can't help but think some characters like Bandana Dee or Chibi Robo, their best chance is the base roster. But I'll admit that might be because half of Smash 4 character DLC was third party and the expectation that DLC characters need to be hype.

Looking through the posts I continue to miss and I just realized something: We got like... So much Final Fantasy Related Content coming soon don't we? Hell, I think this was probably the first time that we got a character from a series that was never on a Nintendo console that somehow found their way onto a Nintendo Console with Cloud and FF7.

This actually does make me wonder that with all this good fortune if we could very well see a second Final Fantasy Character? Or if that second Square slot is being reserved for Geno?

Either way though, I have to say that with Isabelle's reveal being as chill as it was, it feel like it is business as usual around here.

---

As for who's left, I really don't know at this point. I'll need to review a few things, but I'd like to guess we have at least four more newcomers left (although I can't say for sure for the number of Echo fighters).

Oh I'm well aware. I was just saying that Daisy is just as deserved on the roster as any of the other characters so far especially considering she's in as a clone, rather than a fully realized character.
It's kind of funny how Daisy and Geno are such an excellent depiction of disparity.
Daisy is a prolific character who regularly appears and has insanely wide appeal to the masses, but gaming enthusiasts loathe her.
Meanwhile Geno is a minor character from a 20 year old one-off game that is considered a cult classic to gaming enthusiasts, and the masses don't even know who the fuck he is.

Sakurai is respected and has quite a pull. To suggest it woulid be easier to get Geno is a sign of lack of faith in his bargaining power.

I mean, it is pretty much confirmed it's easier to get Geno (given the Mii costume), and we also know it's something he'd wanted at some point at least. But I have absolutely no horse in this race, because I don't give an airborne intercourse about Geno. I think he's a bad character in a mediocre game. I'd rather have Mallow if it had to be SMRPG.

So people say Bandanna Waddle Dee is doubtful for Smash because he's post-Sakurai Kirby-game-wise, and then hand-wave the Masked Dedede Final Smash since he was conceived from Super Star Ultra, the game that built off Sakurai's last Kirby title, Super Star. But... Bandanna Waddle Dee was literally conceived BY SAKURAI in the original Kirby Super Star as the first opponent in the sub-game Megaton Punch, given even more prominence in Super Star Ultra as Dedede's advisor in Revenge of the King...

I don't really have a horse in this race since I'm fine with whoever gets added to Smash (I don't have much personal attachment to the majority of Nintendo IPs), but I dislike the notion that Bandanna Waddle Dee was wholly conceived in post-Sakurai Kirby, despite having more relevance to Sakurai than Masked Dedede.

I reallllly hope we still get a super "WTF" character like Mary O...

Also, I know I'm only a semi-regular poster but I hope that when she is revealed y'all are like "oh yeah, there is that guy on Era who always talked her up! I think his pic was an adorable puppy or something."

This is my final prediction until the next reveal. I have abandoned all hopes and dreams. This is serious business now.

New Fighters:
Inkling
Ridley
Simon Belmont
King K. Rool
Isabelle
Incineroar - Unconfirmed
Skull Kid - Unconfirmed
Geno - Unconfirmed

New Echo Fighters:
Dark Samus (Samus)
Daisy (Peach)
Chrom (Roy)
Shadow (Sonic) - Unconfirmed
Ken (Ryu) - Unconfirmed
Richter Belmont

That totals to 8 new fighters and 6 new echo fighters for a grand total of 14 new fighters.

How does this make you feel?

(I didn't forget about Mii Fighters. They would just clog up the roster. They only appear when you create a Mii anyway.)
More likely is it's gonna be a 12 by 6 roster (71 chars), with (acc to Vergeben) Incineroar, Ken and a S-E char.

I think base roster is the easiest way for some smaller characters to get in, but I feel like Nintendo's Switch characters will take preference to further promote them and their games. Also some fan favs that don't need licenses to add, like Dixie or Bandana. Maybe they can even tie in characters to a few future releases like they did with Corrin. People underestimate how many popular characters Nintendo has and how much they can sell.

The weird part is that Geno feels more suited to echo role due to... his low appearances, but he doesnt have a base to use
