OK, I don't know what kind of downspiral you all have gotten yourselves into, but I'd like to please, please remind you all of the Smash 4 Gematsu leak for a second.

He had a lot of accurate information. However, it was also incomplete. People got venomous in insisting it WAS complete, that it was the be all end all of the roster. It was not.

I'd like to make a plea to everyone here to please hold your horses in assuming that the number of characters a leaker knows about is the cap on the number of characters in the game. It just results in the Smash fandom acting like a bunch of toxic maniacs and the last time it happened it wasn't even correct. So please settle down.
I don't think he made any claim other than we'll get at least around half a dozen more newcomers, not including Inkling, Ridley, or Simon.

Since the list of characters is finalized in the early stages of development, I wonder if someone somehow got a hold of that. Emily seemed to know quite a bit before the game was even revealed.

So in terms of future announcements, I guess we're expecting one more Smash direct since they said they would explain the extra mode later.

So that leaves what? I don't think there will be another Nintendo direct before December. So maybe we just have a trailer drop kind of like how Robin's did but besides that they would be in the next Smash direct?

With semi clones back on the menu do people still think she'll be an echo?

If she's in, she'll at least be slightly more different than Chrom, but possibly not as different as Luigi, Lucas, or Isabelle. Different Neutral b and Up B are almost certain. probably some different A attacks too.

I'd put Toad above Dixie in terms of overall recognition (he's definitely been in significantly more games sold than Dixie), though I think Dixie would be the better choice for a Smash character.

The only reasons I'd be fine with Dante is it'll pretty much be the only way we'll see him and Bayonetta in the same game.(eff you death battle.)

And the music it'll bring.

Waluigi is not above Dixie Kong, he's not even the most important character next in his own series.

I only expect two reveals for the final direct excluding echoes so yeah, if it's more than that, we'll get them before the Direct somehow. I'll settle for 3 more newcomers and next one will be revealed somehow early October. I don't even dare guess who anymore though, lol.

Thing is, if we get two more smash directs, one is going to go into the spirits business, among other things for sure. What sort of material do we have for a second smash focused direct outside of that?
I'm thinking we would just have a trailer drop in October and after that it will tell us the date for the next Direct.

It's also why I'm thinking we might get Elma and KOS-MOS a super elaborate trailer with dialogue featuring both of them would be huge and mirror the Robin/Lucina trailer by not only having 2 fighters but also is that Robin's trailer was also pretty cinematic and featured alot of dialogue in it.

Waluigi is a well known recurring Super Mario character. His meme fueled popularity doesn't mean shit to Sakurai because he has nothing more to justify his inclusion

Waluigi has never expanded beyond descriptions given to him by magazines to hype up Tennis 64. His supporters kept going on about "personality", but it didn't change the fact that Waluigi's highest point since his debut was having his outfit worn by Mario.

3 more newcomers and an echo or two would be decent I think. Couldn't expect more than that personally. As long as one of those newcomers is Elma, I'm all in.

I don't think we'll get 2 more Smash Directs.
There's still a few things to clarify though. I imagine Spirit mode will take up the bulk, a couple new characters+echoes, online stuff, maybe amiibo functionality, any additional modes like all-stars, trophies. That's what I'd expect to get covered. If it's another 30 or so minutes, that's plenty of time, and I don't think Spirit mode will be so complicated as to take up 15-20 minutes. I think it'll be 10 or so minutes at most.

Yeah, had something every month so far right? Even if it's not a smash direct, or even a direct general, I have a hard time picturing all of october rolling by without getting anything to chew on

Yeah! I can see all of that fitting cleanly into a november direct

I absolutely love your avatar.

(Now, on-topic)

I feel like yeah we get dramatic about characters and levels and who is "deserving" and "stage theory" and "music theory" and loz and verg but at the end of the day I feel like we all agree that this game is already shaping up to be amazing and the roster is aces.
I'm having trouble playing anything else because all I do is spend time thinking about Smash Ultimate. It's definitely going to become one of my most played games.

I always thought the Castlevania newcomers trailer would've been great for October. Kind of surprised it didn't happen that way, but I'm sure they had their own reasons; maybe it has to do with marketing in some way?

It pulled double duty acting as a big bang for the opening of the Smash direct (had it not leaked), as well as being a teaser for Luigi's Mansion 3 (The poltergust in the trailer is the LM3 poltergust, and the plunger attack is new for LM3). I'd say it fit far better in August than in October.

Not really, no. Not counting the Ultimate teaser in March, we've had E3 in early June, and the Smash Direct in late August, with nothing new in July, followed by the Isabelle reveal now in September.
The pre-release Smash Direct will likely be happening in late October to early November (so about a month before release), and except maybe some character reveal in a game-specific Direct, I doubt we'll see anything up until then, and it's also unlikely we'll get any more character reveals after that, since we've been told we'll get all characters revealed prior to launch, and the review copies will start going out throughout November.

Agreed, you won't see as many people on twitter complaining if Dixie ends up as an AT. Waluigi is absolutely more well known.

Doesn't matter. Few people freaked out over Toad's deconfirm but that doesn't mean Toad isn't by far the most iconic Nintendo character not on the roster.

Sakurai spent a lot of time describing it, so there would have to be entire other Smash focused stream (likely) in October (less likely) for that to work.

I get the feeling that the biggest non-Pokemon Nintendo character not in the roster is a Koopa Troopa or a Goomba or something, frankly. Speaking in terms of recognition. Mario enemies just have way more visibility and appear more consistently. Not that I think they're going to be in Smash.

I think there will be some type of direct in both october and november. One will be smash focused, the other will not. We'll probably get more than one newcomer in the smash one, but likely only one newcomer in the non-smash focused direct.

I could also be 100% wrong. It's just idle speculation on my part.

I think we are going to get 70 fighters with a few more echoes. It'll probably be Incineroar and a Dragon Quest character. Ken and Shadow are probably locks for echoes. Big Boss makes a lot of sense to me, but probably wont make it in.

DLC will take it up to 75.

Banjo Kazooie will be easier as DLC as Microsoft can take a direct cut of that income.
Doom Slayer, Dante, Sora and Rabbid Peach.
You don't think we'll get any first party characters as DLC?

Honestly, I feel similarly. I think just the fact Mario characters are so absolutely prolific means they have so much more visibility and recognizability. I absolutely believe more people are familiar with Toad, and likely are with Waluigi or Dry Bones and such than Dixie. I feel like we'd have to disqualify both Mario and Pokemon to have Dixie get up there.

That KOS-MOS post makes me want to make a post advocating for Taki but then I realized all I got is "SC2 was a thing with Link in it and payback would be fun", "we don't have a lot of girls so I could see that being a factor over Mitsurugi or Nightmare", and "her SC2 stage theme is one of the most, if not the most iconic songs in the series". But yeah, damn, KOS-MOS is a great choice. Also makes me think Lloyd and Heihachi aren't happening before her incidentally enough.

Why are people still thinking Dixie will be an Echo? I'd say that Sakurai would rather leave her out than making her an Echo.
I agree. I do think she stands a huge shot now with Isabelle being a Luigi/Wolf-esque semi-clone of Villager. I think this frees up Dixie to be the same of Diddy. I think she's a shoe-in now, if not in the base game then as DLC.
Is Halloween even a thing in Japan? I would assume it's not something Sakurai cares for.
Yes and no. It's about as big as Valentine's Day is in the West. Individuals will celebrate it and shops and places will decorate for it, but trick-or-treating's definitely not a thing outside of specific areas like department stores or Disneyland. Basically, it's not a huge cultural thing like it is here, and I don't think they'd make a spooky announcement not tied to a seasonal event just 'cuz.

Every newcomer (not echo) gets a song uploaded to the website after their reveal
Each series only has a song uploaded to the site once, with the possible exception of Mario because My Music has two Mario sections.

So if you have a song on the website already (Zelda, Kirby, Pikmin) you likely aren't getting a newcomer, and probably semi-clone. You can bet Tuesday nights update will be an Animal Crossing song, which was pushed back from this most recent Tuesday because Isabelle wasn't revealed yet and Sakurai didn't want to break the Music Rule.

Masozi Do you want our revised bet to be if Tuesdays music is Animal Crossing? Same steaks. If it isn't, it means the music rule doesn't apply to semi clones and Skull Kid still has a chance.
Deal.

Being a "big" character isn't all about immediate recognition among people, for instance there's tons of Pokemon and Mario enemies surely more known than a lot of the smash roster but I'm not sure we'd be considering Goomba or *picks random number generator for kanto dex....56* MANKEY (my boy!) as a BIG character for smash, I think trying to weigh potential inclusions by such a metric misses the kind of wider context that Smash itself chooses characters for such a history, position within their franchise and more.

Which is my nice way of saying Waluigi having borderline meme fuelled polling placement and attendance in a glut of mario spinoffs ain't likely to change Sakurai's thoughts here on the guy being almost like the face of assist trophies.
I'm probably 20 mins behind this conversations conclusion.

Donkey Kong Country's long absence also led to Dixie Kong having gaps where she didn't appear for a number of years, although it's nowhere near as drastic as K. Rool. Going of Mariowiki, between 1998 and 2002 she only appeared as a Melee trophy, and then she disappeared totally in 2009 to 2013.

As opposed to K. Rool, her saving grace isn't just Tropical Freeze, it's also that she spent much time in spinoff purgatory.

I'm not expecting Dixie on the base roster, but she'd be an excellent Isabelle-style DLC character. Just take Diddy and give him a unique up special, a bunch of ponytail-based standard attacks, and change the properties of his other specials and you're good.

IMO, here's who I'd list as the biggest remaining Nintendo all-stars. These are all characters who've had tons and tons of consistency as main/supporting characters in their franchises for years.

Toad/Captain Toad
Dixie Kong
Waluigi
Bandana Waddle Dee
Cranky Kong
Peppy Hare + Slippy Toad
