It looks like a rat to me. A squirrel would be a little bigger. A possum would have bigger ears.

You should keep it. Compared to other rodents, rats are very sweet and bond well with humans. They don't live a long time but they're otherwise really good pets.

Petition to have him drawn as a cartoon and put it up next to the ResetEra logo on the top of the page as the site mascot. Let's do it

Rats can be amazing pets.

They're incredibly smart animals and bond well with people. Like dogs, but without the dumb stuff lol.

This comment brings me back.

I had a friend during Junior High that had all kind of pets, one of them was a friendly rat.

I was afraid at first, but I quickly understood he was awesome. Little dude, the moment he was near a human, climb on you to chill on your shoulder. :)

Good job OP, keep up the good work, I'm very curious to see what kind of animal it is in a few days.

You're doing good work OP. Your compassion and level of care is inspiring. I keep checking back on the thread to see if you learned anything new.

When I was a kid, my friends and I got cut off from our homes on the wrong side of a flooded creek. While we were trying to figure out what to do, we saw a zodiac type raft/boat being directed down the creek by an older teenager. He was wearing a boonie hat, and looked straight out of an adventure show. Perched on his shoulder was his pet rat. He introduced us to his rat, and then paddled us across the creek safely. We thought he was the coolest guy we had ever met.

Wild rats are different than fancy (domesticated) rats. They can take longer to bond with a human and even then they can still be a bit "bitey". It will still have a lot of its wild tendencies even if it views you as a part of its mischief (name for a group of rats). Just wanted to give you a heads-up.

Good luck, OP. Based on some of the info shared in this thread it sounds like you won't have to wait too long to figure out exactly what it is. Hope it all goes well. Please keep sharing updates!

If you're successful in keeping him a live, he'll be pretty independent in the blink of an eye. I raised hamsters when I was a kid and the babies grew up so fast it was mind blowing.

You know, it's most likely a possum when you think about it.
They typically attach themselves to their mother until they're old enough, if he fell off it would explain why you found him in a gas station lot.

Thanks for giving him a chance.

You should get a camera and stream it 24/7 of it growing up. I am sure you will get a lot of views. Would be interesting to see if people's guesses were right.

Hi there
I'm on the phone with my vet (also my best friend, also a whole clinc of geniuses).
The wildlife expert in the clinic just sent me this:

"Allora non sono sicuro sia uno scoiattolo potrebbe essere anche un ghiro, cmq bisogna tenerlo al caldo 30 gradi avvolto in un panno umido ma non bagnato(per non farlo disidratare) , come alimentazione può usare un latte da gattini senza lattosio o, x 24 ore, il latte di capra non freddo ma a temperatura di corporea (circa 30 gradi) e pasti ogni 2 ore anche di notte."

Don't worry, i don't expet you to be fluent in italian, therefore:

"So, i'm not sure it's a squirrel it could be a dormouse, you must keep him warm at 30 degrees (celsius) wrapped in a damp cloth. Damp, not wet (it's so he doesn't get dehydrated).
As far as food goes you can use lactose free milk for kittens* or, for 24 hours, goat milk (30 degrees celsius as far as temperature is concerned).
He/she has to eat every 2 hours (yes, at night too)"

* he wrote this like it's an actual buyable product, i have no clue.

Hope this helps, definitely rooting for the little fella.
If you need anything send me a pvt with your skype contact. (i'm on there almost 24/7)

Hugs,
Gabe.

Good work fella, hope it works out for the little fuzzball. It certainly stands a better chance since it was lucky enough to be found by a decent human being like yourself. Thumbs up .

Ugh, having to feed him every two hours is going to be tough, hopefully this phase doesn't last long.
I'm guessing a couple weeks at most given how fast these things grow ?

Yeah. Good news is I'm a Lyft/Doordash driver, so I can go do a couple runs, come back, feed it, repeat. Work won't get in the way too badly
