I downloaded it on my Switch last night and finished chapter one. Here are my thoughts:

-The story so far is interesting
-The combat is real time and easy to master
-There are a few pieces of side content per area. I like this.
-It is weird that the character's faces don't move when talking but I got used to it quick
-No open world but the areas are big enough IMO

Overall I am liking it a lot. Feels a lot like a Mana game with a Final Fantasy Story. Definitely worth the introductory price.

Played for an hour or two last night -- it's a decent recreation of the main game (which I think is still pretty underrated). A little linear but fun to go through again, especially with these great characters.

The only con I have so far (it looks great on the Switch screen, no surprise there).

I played a few hours on the Switch, between yesterday and today, and yes.
it's really surprisingly nice on the Switch screen, and even in portable mode.

Fantastic :)

True.

It reminded me of Secret of Mana too :)

How is the battle system compared to the original game? I'm all for the new presentation and such, but I really, unironically, enjoyed the hell out of XV's battle system.

Is there any like depth to it at all. I'm fine with it being simple on the surface
I've only played the phone version enough to get to combat (just booted up the Switch version last night to see how the framerate and resolution held up). On phones, it's just simple tapping on enemies to attack. Tapping on an enemy farther away does a warp strike. Prompts would come up for parries, which were executed just by tapping the symbol in time. Failing to tap it in time would result in you taking a hit. Other party member's abilities would pop up on the right side of the screen and were executed with a simple tap. Since the Switch version doesn't have touch controls, they should just be a button prompt.

I'm really on the fence. The positive impressions are making it harder to resist and that price seems decent, too.

For all the shit I talked on the original FFXV, I bought this. Maybe it will be more palatable to me in this form. I like the aesthetic and playing on a portable will be nice at least, and it was pretty cheap...

I find the positive impressions interesting. I have a theory that the hyper realistic graphics make the anime-like story seem worse than it is.

Pocket Edition is inherently silly, which makes the story more palatable.

I could get somewhat used to the style if Noctis didnt look like shit...all other characters look somewhat okay/charming, except Sasuke.

I've only played some of the full FFXV, but I'm liking how streamlined this game is, with more narrow linear paths as opposed to the wide open areas of the original (that quickly got boring to traverse). I do miss the customisable parts of the car though, especially the soundtracks.

The switch version seems to run pretty well aside from the horrendous initial load where all i get is a black screen with no loading notification. First time, i thought my system locked up.

I'm really excited to dive into this on Switch. I started Royal Edition on Xbox One X ages ago, but for some reason I just couldn't stick with it. This may be the way I finally experience FF XV's story, for better or for worse. If I love it I may revisit royal edition.

This game is less than 10 hours long, but it was hard for me to play through both times I have.

FFXV has some slow patches (and rubbish sidequests) that makes losing interest totally understandable. Pocket Edition is one long slow patch.

I legit am interested in the Switch version... but there's NO reviews on ANY system, at least going by Metacritic.

How is this anyway, and on Switch at that?

I bit the bullet on Switch. As someone who thinks that FFXV is an... alright game, this is... alright 2 chapters in. It's a shallow yet mildly entertaining game with some small issues here and there. Performance on Switch can be iffy at times (which is particularly baffling) and you can tell that this was built for touchscreen devices. Aiming your teleport in particular is not as precise as it could be but that isn't that much of an issue because the game is rather easy.

Ultimately, I'm more disappointed in what this game isn't than what it is, which is an inferior version of a game that I didn't like all that much either. The visuals would have lent themselves for a funny "Abridged" version and the camera would have made for a great opportunity to give it multiplayer. But I get that the scope of this probably didn't allow them to do all that. It's not really a bad game but compared to everything else Square-Enix is bringing to the Switch, this is clearly the worst of the bunch. (edit: aside from WoFF. Which is a different kind of tedious but I guess some might be able to extract enjoyment out of it.)

If you really want a cheapo JRPG on Switch, go for Cosmic Star Heroine. It's a way better game than this.

Some impressions from someone who hasn't played FFXV proper all the way through:

- Strangely, although I'm not a fan of the chibi style of, say, Bravely Default, FFXV PE's graphical style actually makes the story more palatable to me. Never dug the photo-realistic jpop look of the cast.
- Combat is entertaining, and better with a controller than touch. So far (couple hours in) I haven't been challenged at all, and I'm not sure if I'd ever even need potions to heal, so I do wish there was a harder mode available for consoles.
- Areas are pretty linear, but with optional paths, hidden areas, and a good amount of items/collectibles to find.
- Without all the optional hobby/hunt bloat of FFXV's attempted partial open world, the story's pacing is much brisker and more sensible given the urgent context.
- I wish they'd put the slightest bit of effort into animating the faces and emoting of the cast, but whatever.

FFXV's PC version has been highly praised for its tech and visuals (one of the Digital Foundry guys and Durante even called it the best-looking PC game they've played). If you have beefy PC I would obviously recommend the real deal. This Pocket Edition is a cute little, linear and streamlined version of FFXV, but it's just not the same as playing an AAA open world ARPG like the main version is. The Royal/Windows Edition have been on sale for $20-25 regularly in the last months, which is almost as much as the Pocket Edition, lol.

Btw, there's a free demo of the real FFXV on Steam that lets you play the first chapter.
Yea, I missed that sale but I'm still waiting on the graphics card . 1070 or 1080 come benchmarks.

The visuals and art style are appalling. They couldn't pay me to play this.

The visuals are actually surprisingly great. They do a good job of creating the illusion of an open world during the driving segments, and it all moves so smoothly.

The character models are really, really bad. But the cutscenes are recreated pretty much 1:1 with the original. All of the details are there. I was really impressed with the Ifrit cutscene, where he jumps around the falling swords. They didn't skimp out on the animations, even if the art style suggests otherwise.

I'm kinda torn on this. Kinda interested, on the other hand I'm gonna be spending like $100 on FF games for Switch in 2019, lol. I gotta have VII, X + X2, and XII at minimum and probably will get IX too and maybe Crystal Chronicles as well.

Is this worth $17.99 on the Switch?

Edit: never mind. I'll wait until it's 75% off or something, lol.

For me it's worth the full price even the Pocket Edition :)

I've been playing for 2 days in a row, and I can not get away a single second from the Switch from how nice it is.

It's really a perfect game for Switch.

Both as for the beauty of the story, and because of the portability of the console.

Exceptional and beautiful :)

I apologize if this question was already asked. Is the soundtrack still the same?
It is not. At least the opening when they are pushing the car is different.
It is the same. Only the song during the car-pushing intro changed - I assume for licensing reasons probably (the song that played in the main game is the Stand by Me cover song Florence + the Machine made for FFXV together with two other songs).

Do they plan to release all the story DLC for this ?
Nope. It's just the main story without the DLCs (and without the the bits of patched-in cutscenes from last year and from the Royal/Windows Edition).

It has a new small mini-dungeon in chapter 12 though, which interestingly the December 2016 4chan leak mentioned specifically being cut from the main game:

And there is dialog in here that was cut/unused in the main game at certain parts including the final battle:
