I'm also a bit worried about the Xs Max resolution. Is this going to be another iPhone 6 Plus situation where performance suffers due to the higher res? I assume the Xr will have better longevity as a result.

Does this really happen? Whats the point of having world class SoC if it cant handle small resolution bump.

*fist bump*
Normally I go for the max storage but as I'm using only a fifth of my 256 7+ I thought I'd save myself £1.

Yeah I'm only using 154gb of the 256 in my iPhone X as I have the 2tb iCloud storage that I share with my family and my in-laws. The 256gb is plenty as I take advantage of the optimize photos/videos. My iCloud backup for just that is 253gb!

Randomly woke up 5am Pacific time, decided to check Apple Store app just for fun after convincing myself all day yesterday that I don't need a new phone because my 7 is still good, and ended up getting the Xs 256gig in gold. Paid for in full. Fuck me.

I couldn't decide which color I wanted as I love them all. I would normally just get black/space gray, but wanted to try something different this time around. The silver was shipping Sep28, so I went with Gold since it said it was available Sep21. Black/Space Gray was also shipping the 28th as well.

It happened with the 6 Plus, though that was a while back.

It's not really a small resolution bump either.

Xr = 1792 x 828 = 1,483,776
Xs Max = 2688 x 1242 = 3,338,496

That's 2.25x the number of pixels.

Looking at those numbers, I think I've convinced myself to wait for the Xr 128Gb. I'll lose out on 3D Touch, OLED, and the dual/zoom camera, but I'll gain on performance and battery life, as well as save a lot of money.

I *wanted* an XR just because of the colors (why doesn't Apple offer colors in their premium phones??), but I wasn't happy about the low resolution display or larger device with larger bezels - I'm used to my iPhone X's amazing display and perfect size. So I experimented: I got the gold XS, and ordered a leather case for my phone, so that can supply the color. I've never had a case on my phone before, hopefully it doesn't make the phone feel bulky or anything. If nothing else it'll keep the phone from slipping and sliding all over the place, that glass back coupled with the camera bump makes the phone really like to slide off any surface.

You are comparing the wrong phones. You should be comparing the X to the Xs Max, because nobody had any performance issues at all with the iPhone X and its 1125 x 2436 resolution, which isn't much less than the Xs Max, but the Xs Max is a more powerful computer. The only performance concern that should make you choose Xr is if you are a developer who wants to push the phone as far as it can possibly go.

Also should I get a screen protector? are those still important?

Depends imo. I haven't had a screen protector on my Pixel XL in the last year and it's fine. There's some small super light scratches on the screen if I turn it in the light correctly, but i'm also not someone that drops my phone. Screens are scratch resistant enough these days that I wouldn't grab a screen protector for that, but if there's the possibility you're going to drop it, a tempered glass protector can be a live saver since i've had multiple devices dropped where that protector shattered instead of the screen.

So imo it really depends on you and how risk prone your phone will be.

I haven't used a screen protector in the past 2 phones and it's been pretty much fine. I am on the iUP so I get apple care. if I really scratched my phone badly I'd just pay the 30 bucks to get the screen replaced.

If I want to upgrade 2 lines, are there any potential deals that won't require activating an extra line? Looking back at X deals over the last year, it seemed like every BOGO deal required an extra line. Carrier is Verizon.

I always hated screen protectors because with the home button they always stuck out like a sore thumb. But on my current X I have an edge to edge one and you can't even tell it's there. I'll likely do that again, so I don't have to drive an hour to the apple store if I break it.

If your phone is going to be in a situation where the screen is going to come into contact with sharp objects regularly, go for it. Other wise no. I don't use one and I have a "phone pocket" and a separate keys pocket. Plus a screen protector won't really protect it from drops and impact.

So I'm new to the wireless charging future and it seems Apple doesn't sell one themselves. Anyone got a recommendation?

Also looking for wireless ear buds recommendations since there's no 3.5mm anymore. The Earpods that come with the phone simply don't fit in my ear. They fall out but in-ear earbuds don't so I'm looking for wireless in-ear earbuds. I don't feel like paying $170 for Applepods yet. Something under $50? Thanks.

Edit: Maybe wired in-ear earbuds with a lightning port connection would work.

The Belkin BoostUp charger is the one I got for my 8 Plus last year, and I've had zero issues. I think it's like $45 on Amazon.

For the wireless headphones, the RHA 750i Wireless neckbuds are IMO the best wireless earbuds that I've ever tried. Great noise isolation, adjustable earbuds for different ear sizes, solid battery life, and steady connection. I bought those last November and have had zero issues. I use them in addition to a pair of AirPods for work calls, but the 750 Wireless ones are my daily drivers for my noisy train commute.

The iPhone from the Apple Store are unlocked, right? Ordered the XS with my Sprint number but I was thinking about switching to T-Mobile when I got the phone.

Pretty sure this is the first year where all the phones are the same, and choosing a carrier just means you get a SIM card from that carrier.

I need some accessory advice as I haven't had an iPhone since the 4S. What's the deal with the fast charging (or lack thereof, out of the box) that I see people complaining about? I have a bunch of fast chargers with USB ports that I currently use with USB-C cables to fast charge my Galaxy S9+. Can I just get some Lightning cables and be good to fast charge my XS, or do I need new chargers too that are "compatible" with Apple products?

I also want Airpods but I'm going to wait until the October event because I feel like they'll announce updated ones then...

That's an upgrade fee that they normally charge anytime you upgrade your phone. That happened last time I upgraded to my Galaxy phone.
Missed this last night, but I wasn't talking about the upgrade fee. The email lists another $30 as a "one-time preorder charge."

The order tracking page doesn't have it though, so I'm not sure how it'll shake out.

You need USB-C to Lightning cable (adapters won't deliver full speed charge. It has to be the genuine cable like this https://www.apple.com/shop/product/...a11067fd0bd4309762c61f7bdd739fea88b9d29ab7c36) and USB-C Wall Charger thaT has 18W or higher wattage and "USB C Power Delivery" like this https://smile.amazon.com/Anker-Char...&qid=1536937202&sr=8-8&keywords=USB+c+charger .

Ordered a 44 al watch and a home pod. I was up at 2 but couldn't find the right card so mid Oct delivery for the watch. It'll be my first smart watch so I'm excited! Trying to talk my love into a Xs so I can have her X and make my 8+ my work phone. My work phone is a 6 and doesn't work right (if I put the headset to my ear the 'buttons' get pushed so I end up muting/pressing numbers/etc) and they won't replace it for another year :/ Not to mention I now cannot stand the screen size.

So my phone cost me $1700 CAD with tax, $1520 without tax.

$1520 CAD for a $1099 USD phone is almost a 10% markup on the currency conversion. Apple screwing Canada as usual :(

Guess I shouldn't be shocked Apple Watch orders were behind this morning when I ordered, so stuck with a mid-October shipping. If Apple precedent holds up, that probably moves up a week or two. My poor wife and her watch that doesn't make it through the day.

Ugh waiting for a friend who works at a store to provide a discount on the watch, but I see the shipping time has slipped back quite a bit :(

Welp, will probably live with regular charging for at least a few more weeks until I either get sick of it or find a good deal somewhere haha (the former being much more likely than the latter, I suspect...).

Stock at stores has very little to do with shipping times. After the initial frenzy, Apple keeps stores stocked as much as possible. Like if you have an October ship date it's probably better to cancel and then use the store in-stock trackers and grab an in-store reservation for the model when it pops up in stock.

FWIW I canceled my Apple Store order and went with T-Mobile.. despite the rep assuring me multiple times it was shipping next week... order confirmation says 10/3-10/16... though still ahead of apple's shipping estimates.

stainless steel is sold the fuck out it seems... a minimum of 2 weeks after launch from everywhere. guessing it's a combination of both fewer SS units being manufactured, and the demand for them far outstripping supply.

I was debating ordering a watch last night when I was ordering my phone but figured it wouldn't be too delayed if I ordered in the morning. Haven't had a chance to take a look today, but based on what you said it looks like I was wrong haha.

I haven't bought an Apple thing in a while. Did they get rid of Apple Care Education discounts for iPhones? I only see it for Macs and iPads now.

Right? That's kinda what I figured, too. I didn't even look at the shipping estimate when I ordered because I figured it'd be fine. Oops.

I'd cancel and order from AT&T, which has next week shipping options, but I don't want/need cellular.

I'm trying to keep this straight...so the XR is a little bit bigger than the XS? You'd think it would be the other way around. Which one is the same size as the old X?

Honestly kinda surprised it is moving this fast. I suppose I underestimated the demand for a new watch.

thirst for watch is real. buoyed by the fact that it's the ONLY interesting wearable on the market for like a year or two now.. plus the advancements of the Series 4 itself.

sucks because I Was psyched to finally retire my OG SS next week.. looks like I have to wait 2-3 more weeks. :(

I have an X on 02 refresh and pay around £69 a month all in. Saw my mate at 02 and sorted a 256gb Xs with 100GB a month for like £45 a month with his family and friends discount. Nothing paid other than a £50 pre-order fee which I get back. I'm selling my X back to them which fully pays off what I had left on my device.

I wasn't bothered at all about these and still think the X is great, but I have a scratch in the screen and I'll get a brand new, slightly faster one for less money per month. Cool.

Yeah i'm excited to have my first Apple watch. I've been on Android for the last handful of years and the watch offerings seem so bad. I got a Fitbit Versa and it's barely functional and can't pair with my phone half the time. The only decentish one i've had is my Gear Fit and even that seems a step down from Apple's.

I'm so tempted to get a watch but it's so hard for me to give up the look of my analogue one. I kind of want to see the sizes in person too.

I'm excited for the run up of the new iPhone though. Preorders today, new iOS and app updates Monday, phone reviews Wednesday and phones Friday.

My biggest curiosity is if Apple can match the Pixel in terms of it's image processing with that smart hdr they've been showing off
