I hope subscription numbers are poor for this service and Nintendo has a serious rethink about the value being offered here. A cloud saving system like this is only of value to the customer who is all in from now until forever and not the person who would like to dip in and out.

I hope they implement a grace period to account for a subscription lapse. There are plenty of scenarios where this can happen and it seems like such an easy thing to avoid.

The switch has convinced be that Nintendo will NEVER be able to release a complete console gaming experience. They always find a way to fuck it up. Even when there are plain as day examples that have been in front of them for years. Baffling! They are fucking stupid at times.
I mean, Switch has been fine for millions of users so far, adding more stuff to it hardly makes it suddenly a complete and utter failure... Ok yeah that "more stuff" includes paywalling online mp for some games that were free until now but that was known since the beginning so yeah, nobody was calling Switch incomplete so far.

Pretty sure one of the rumors said they aren't deleted immediately, just eventually, after your sub lapses. So the whole "What if my CC fails?" fears seem overdramatic

Nobody outside of Microsoft offers it for free (and that's only because they own Azure). Cloud servers cost money to operate and maintain, of course you're not getting it for free.
Azure has nothing to do with it given it was a thing before Azure was a thing. And as for Sony, they don't delete all your cloud saves just because your PS Plus subscription has lapsed.

At the end of the day, we're talking about tiny amounts of data for cloud saves. And this is something that can easily be covered by the investment you've made in the platform itself, and the licensing costs Nintendo gets from physical sales, and the cut they take from everything sold via the eShop - not to mention those that do subscribe for online gaming will add money to that pot too.

All that aside, perhaps we should be thankful that Switch has cloud saves at all.

But if you were to re-subscribe, your latest saves would be uploaded at the beginning of that subscription? So what is lost?

If your Switch breaks when you aren't subscribed, you lose your saves. Nintendo doesn't have a backup of your outdated saves from when you were subscribed previously... but that's how I would expect a paid cloud save service to work.

What's the issue?
Your subscription can end today, your switch breaks in half tomorrow and when you get a new one, you don't have your data.
That sounds like a good service to you?

Where exactly did the OP say that the Switch was an utter failure?

We could always test this next week. Let the 7 day trial lapse and then see if the save gets deleted later. Kinda curious to know how long do you have to resub

I just don't understand how Nintendo is still so incompetent and clueless when it comes to online.

This, the voice chat smartphone app...it's beyond embarrassing at this point.

so, it's like the poke bank, if you don't re sub, your pokemon cloud backup will be deleted.

They stop giving you the service you're paying for after you stop paying for it

This doesn't really seem that surprising to me?

(They should offer it for free honestly, but considering it's included in this service fee it totally makes sense you would lose access after your subscription ends.)

Nintendo should hire professionals. They're doing great in everything except the online related stuff...

Because we already knew it was a paid service, so there's nothing new here.
Which means your only reference point is what Sony offers. And as shitty as their service is, they at least offer a 6 month grace period.

I cannot understand why you would expect even worse. No grace period at all. That is what is new.

Ok, this is actively bad as a setup for this sort of data backup service. It's thankfully something that could be changed quickly once they get the message. I really, really hope they get the message before too long.

I honestly think it's a pride thing really. They don't look at what the competition is doing because they don't think they are competing with them. And I think they don't want to spend the money it takes to have something at the same level as PSN/XBOX LIVE server wise for match making/voice chat/party chat.

I feel blessed I never was into online gaming so, I don't need this. As for saves backup, just use the homebrew app to get your saves and upload them to Google Drive or something.

Did I say everything I dont like is anti-consumer? I said this is. Why? Because it is.
Except it isn't, it's just sub par in your opinion service you don't want to pay for. That's fine.

Ok, my bad, he just said incomplete and fucked up and what not, sorry to me those are somewhat synonymous, I guess I fucked up and my wording was incomplete for what I was trying to say, I'll consider that a complete and utter failure on my part but I hope you get what I meant now.
