On the positive side, the Family group rules are really, really good. It seems you can add and remove members at will and that it supports people being in one group from different countries.

I agree it hasn't been done the right way (but, come on, anyone expected otherwise?) but there is no other way to play online so.. going to buy it anyway.
And this is why Nintendo will get away with their fucking joke of a service which does nothing but lock standard features behind a paywall. Because people will still buy it.

There's a lot more about the service (good and bad) that I dug up here:

https://variety.com/2018/gaming/new...e-multiplayer-nes-cloud-saves-faq-1202942042/

My least favorite is the requirement for a weekly check-in to play NES games offline. :/

Jesus it gets worse.

Considering Microsoft is a giant company which has cloud/data storage as one of their main business lines, they can probably do that more cheaply/efficiently then Nintendo can and eat the cost if that means they can target you better with ads or get your e-mail to spam you with Office 365 stuff.

Nintendo should provide what Sony does, however.
So how can Valve do it?
They don't have a cloud computing business. Or Office 365.

It's amazing how bad of a job everyone else seems to do with cloud storage.

For comparisons sake, my house has 3 Xbox Ones between me and my housemates. If i want to play on their console, all I do is log in and start a game and my save file is auto downloaded in the background.

I love the Switch but I can't help but wonder how much disappointment the save system is going to cause to the casual fan

One step forward, two steps back.

Best way to describe Nintendo's philosophy with anything online related.

So lets do a quick run-down of Nintendos save back up Options

Free back up - nope
Local back up - nope
Compatibility with all games - nope
Holding my back ups hostage - yes

If I didn't own a switch and want to backup my game saves this would be so ridiculous it'd be funny.

You don't have a choice.

This is Nintendo's only monopolistic opportunity in the ecosystem.

I feel like this is Nintendo of the 1990's dominance.

2 years from now Nintendo is going to reveal this was a social experiment to see how much shit they could get away with while still receiving money. There isn't a single good thing about their online service, so this has to be deliberate. Looking forward to the results of this experiment, hopefully they'll give everyone their money back once it's over.

Why is everything about this online service halfassed to the highest degree?
Because Nintendo does not research how other on-line services are structured.

Devs from the WiiU time actually said that Nintendo send them emails stating that ~ "they should not refer to the functionality of other gaming on-line services because they do not know about them".

They work in their own bubble.

I am so glad they haven't practiced this with Pokemon Bank.

Not unexpected, but still disappointing.

...So you just start paying then upload saves again.

The only way this is truly bad is a case where your subscription lapses and you destroy your Switch in the time it takes you to realise you haven't renewed. How many people is that realistically going to happen to?

Ugh that's really shitty. Nintendo really needs to let us back up saves locally, it's really unacceptable that this isn't possible. I get piracy concerns but pirates will always find a way.

So what are you trying to tell me is that I will pay for a service where I will get something I've got for free before plus other "service" that I don't give a damn about, is that right ?

I literally Laughed Out Loud.

This is so horrible, you can only laugh. WTF is Nintendo doing?

They don't delete the saves off your switch just the copies of them in the cloud. Seems some of you are taking it that way.

And the way they described the process this isn't a method of freeing up storage on your switch so there won't be a discrepancy between what is on your switch and what is in the cloud. It is literally just an auto backup service.

GOG and Valve both offer cloud saves.

They don't have Office 365 or any other large cloud storage business outside of their store.

The words Nintendo and Online are just incompatible.

They can't seem to get anything right when it comes to this service. As if the paltry offering wasn't bad enough, this is just insulting.

Yeah they aren't getting a penny from me for this dumpster fire of an online service. My switch is now a single player/ local multiplayer machine.

Unless you own the games digitally on your account and your son/daughter wants to play it on their switch, thats something that the other consoles do just fine

They don't have a cloud computing business. Or Office 365.
I mean, Valve's whole business is basically built on a cloud foundation, that's all of what the whole Steam service is even, publishing gigabytes upon gigabytes upon gigabytes times gazillion of data online and letting millions upon millions of users download them at will, expanding them to a few additional megabytes per game per user for the save files doesn't seem out of the ordinary, it's not like they only have just about enough cloud storage space for the available catalogue of games when that keeps expanding by the hour too...

We would all accept this as a positive service if we had the choice to backup locally too but we don't (because of piracy or Nintendo greed?).

Switch online service looks like a waste of cash to me. Think I'll be trading splatoon in.

I hope it at least warns you of this so you can copy those saves locally. You can transfer cloud saves to local storage right?

This is surprising given even Pokémon Bank holds your Mon for awhile after your subscription lapses.

I am astounded that we won't know which games will support cloud saves and which will require this for online play, until the service launches. That's really cutting it close.

Yeah, I don't know what people expected.

Nintendo's interactions with online has been nothing short of abysmal, ever since their first try. You can still witness it today with their trash tier voice chat option. They just...don't know better.

I'm paying for it, but I expected nothing more than what we already have, so the NES games are just a plus to my capability of playing games like Splat 2/MK8DX/Diablo3/MHGU online.

Nintendo and internet = you should not expect anything with them in this regard, ever. :lol

Are some people under the wrong impression that cloud saving means your saves are only in the cloud!?!? Cause that's what I'm getting from some people here. Cloud Saves are backups. The saves still exist on your system. So if you membership drops you still have them on you system and they'll just get reuploaded when you sign back up!

Unless you're in the habit of letting your systems gets damaged over and over again you shouldn't really be worried about losing your saves. Being able to back them up locally of course would be good and should be allowed since all past Nintendo systems allowed it but they decided not to and I'd really like to know their reason behind this. That said be annoyed but don't try painting this as something it isn't. You aren't losing anything. Nothing is being held hostage. Etc.

Yikes, what the fuck
Reminds me of the Pokémon Bank erasing all your Pokémon if you don't resub in time, so dumb o_o
