So I did some math regarding the current & potential remaining newcomers in relation to Smashdown.
  • As far as we know, Smashdown seems to support up to 4 players
  • Currently, Pokémon Trainer counts as one slot for Smashdown & Mii Fighters aren't available at all
Currently, we have a total of 74 characters (counting echo fighters). If we count Pokémon Trainer as one character & take all 3 Mii Fighters out of the equation, that would put us at 69 characters who are eligible for Smashdown. Operating under the assumption that the recent 4chan rumor is legitimate, the additions of Incineroar (#69), Ken (#60ε), & Dante (#70) would bring us to 72 eligible Smashdown characters. This just so happens to be the only number that's divisible by 2 (72 / 2 = 36), 3 (72 / 3 = 24), & 4 (72 / 4 = 18) until the number 84 (84 / 2 = 42, 84 / 3 = 28, & 84 / 4 = 21). This count would no longer be valid if the Mii Fighters are fair game (even if they're counted as one slot like the Pokémon Trainer), meaning that we'd have to have 84 characters (counting echo fighters) to have a number that's divisible by 2, 3, & 4.

With that said, even if we get 12 DLC characters (with any mix of unique & echo fighters), we likely wouldn't get all 12 right away. As such, the proper division for all 3 numbers (2, 3, & 4) would fall apart until all of the DLC for Smash Ultimate is out. A solution that was discussed on the SmashERA Discord was to have the final 2 or 3 players who won the previous match be able to choose from whoever's left, which would also negate the need for the base game needing exactly 72 eligible Smashdown characters.

Sorry, but I don't think any of this is valid. Smashdown has to work with any number of characters because it has to work regardless of the number of characters you've unlocked. I can't imagine Sakurai limiting the roster based on something like this.

That's actually what happened with Lucas in Brawl. He was intended to be a Ness clone who would only receive unique attacks if time permitted, and the team worked on him little by little over the course of development to make him more unique. I'm not saying that's what happened with Isabelle, but there is a precedent for it.
That's interesting (and it'd be nice if there was a translation)! Man there's probabyl a ton of Brawl information we barely know anything about because it's in japanese interviews and stuff.

That said, I still feel confident that Isabelle was probably always intended to be a semiclone (or whatever is going on here).

e: Watch Famitsu's column next week just have Sakurai brazenly say "So here's Isabelle! She was an echo fighter at first, but we just couldn't let her stay that way!"

I imagine Isabelle did get upgraded from being an Echo. The way her trailer is structured and made alongside just how tailored it was to the Animal Crossing reveal makes me think she wasn't intended to be original.

This would also be incredibly easy for a programmer to solve, so seeing that Smashdown number crunching is always kind of hilarious to me. Just have it check the number of players against the number of characters remaining or something.

Isabelle's trailer reminds me of the Smash 4 DLC characters (especially Corrin) by using in-engine Animal Crossing footage over expensive new CGI. It feels very economical.

That's why I mentioned another solution in the next paragraph.

Yeah it is very economical and that's why I think Isabelle was upgraded at some point in development. Maybe earlier this year I reckon.

Has to be one of the worst posts I have read on era.
My biggest problem is that it seems like for Ultimate, Sakurai is adding characters the "fans" want and isn't doing any character he wants.

I miss that. Nintendo fans are a whiny nostalgic bunch. Every Character so far has been WIDELY requested by a loud niche audience, and it's hurting the fun.

I legit rather have A Wii Fit Trainer and Duck Hunt over Ridley, King K. Rool, and Isabelle.

I'd rather have random Echo's like Lucina and Ricther over Dark Samus and Chrom.

Sakurai is bending to the whims of the fans, it's really starting to hurt to see that as a fan of the series. Both as a competitive fan, and as a general gaming fan.

The general gaming audience doesn't give a fuck about an ugly Crocodile King that hasn't been relevant since the early 2000's. The average gamer doesn't care about an oversized ugly purple dragon that hasn't been featured in a main game in almost a decade. The average gamer doesn't know who Isabelle is or care for her.

But the loud vocal minority has to get their way this game. Can't wait for Waluigi to get in Smash! Because this game has shown that cry loud enough and beg hard enough, and your character WILL get into Smash. It encourages bad behaviors and a toxic part of the community.

Can't wait to also get Geno and Issac! Because Nintendo fans have to be nostalgic and pretend that the average gamer cares about a game 99% of the people haven't played or heard of, and a game that's almost 20 years old.

Don't forget Skull Kid! Because Zelda fans can't be excluded in the whining and begging over niche characters.

If Ultimate didn't already include all the old characters, I'd be way more upset. Thankfully my old mains and characters I love to play are in the game, so it doesn't hurt too bad, but this is the worst selection of New Comers by far. The Smash Ballot is the worst thing to happen to this franchise.

*goes back to maining puff in melee spamming rest*

Im pretty sure Armadas Princess Peach is about the most respected character in all of competitive smash, so yeah, I don't think anyone can really say it would be much different.

Shit, if you can get a thousand people chanting this kind of thing, I don't see why it wont happen if Isabelle was the character being played. I want to see what Ranai from Japan can do with the character.

Any adult who cares about smash as a concept either casually or competitively isn't going to care about how cutesy something is when something cool is happening.

Has to be one of the worst posts I have read on era.

I wasted effort on that guy but its probably just a bait

Thinking more about it 4 more newcomers and 1 more semi could work out in the end.

If newcomers and Echoes were planned together they probably had planned them to be symmetrical. So about 8 Newcomers and 8 Echoes for a 16 character roster. We're already at 4 Newcomers with a Semi Clone and 4 Echoes. If we get 4 more characters that gets us to 8 Newcomers. If Isabelle was upgraded that could leave us with 3 more Echo Fighters. That could be Ken, Shadow and one other character. However I'm thinking that character might be Dixie Kong as she seems like the kind of character they would make an Echo initially.

So if it's her and she gets upgraded then we're looking at

8 Newcomers
2 Semi Clones
6 Echoes

Not a bad spread all things considered.

4 newcomers at most and 2 echos is what I think we'll end at. If Verge continues to be right and Minecraft gets a stage, assist trophy, etc. Then I could see Banjo being likely DLC if they worked with MS to represent Minecraft.

For base roster, newcommers:
  • Incineroar
  • Kirby rep
  • Square rep
  • Final majoe 3rd party reveal
Echos:
  • Ken
  • Shadow

That post is shit, but there is an element I agree with. I kind of feel like there's not a lot of passionate deep cuts Sakurai really cares about and wants to make a creative moveset for. Yeah, there are some well implemented takes on Ridley, Simon Belmont, Inkling, and King K. Rool. This game isn't going to have any creative wildcards like Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Mr Game and Watch, etc. For the last smash game he's making, it kinda makes me sad.

It's a toss up between Rayman and Geno for 3rd party newcomer.

I really think Dixie will make it. The game needs more female newcomers. Seems like Dark Samus and isabelle are the only ones so far.

We dont know its not having "creative wildcards" because we haven't seen neither the initial roster nor the DLC.
Being so far into the smash series there was always going to be less characters to use, both for popularity and personal preferences.

Sakurai: "ST Falcon was a character I had been meaning to implement for a long time. It didn't get a lot of votes in the ballot, but all of the people who voted for it were physically attractive people with pure and kind souls, so I felt that it was the right time to add it."

Sakurai is over a hundred years old. He will be unable to comment on Smash Ultimate's release as, with his final work complete, he will finally crumble into dust.

Do people really doubt that Sakurai is an immortal who will be working on Smash long after civilisation has fallen and we've all decomposed?
Will be like that part in 127 hours. Sakurai reveals Tumble from mario party 3 in smash 87, and then he also makes a bunch of reaction videos to it where he puts on wigs and stuff.

I always believe Miyazaki when he says his films are the last ones he's making. So maybe I am wrong about Sakurai being honest about this being his final Smash.

yup, felt different than the other trailers.

The absence of CGI and even other Smash fighters in the scene before gameplay combined with the fact that she's more semi-cloney than the other newcomers really hints that she was upgraded

Isabelle is the awkward wallflower at the "smash bros furry characters" club. Everyone else is getting oiled up and wrestling and she just wants a nice cuppa.

Give me that King Boo and 14e. Dry Bowser

Dry Bowser is alternate costume material like Meta Ridley. Would be weird as a separate character but actually we have Dr. Mario I guess.

Anyway:

Echo fighters - gameplay trailer
Clone / semi-clone fighters - low budget trailer using assets from other games like DLC in Sm4sh
Newcomers - high-budget Hollywood-like CGI trailer

Fuck. I like Isabelle but her alone was pretty damn underwhelming. Not a big Animal Crossing fan though.

My prediction of 12-14 total new characters seems stronger and stronger. I'm expecting one more reveal in October and the final blowout in a Smash Direct this November.

I think the Isabelle trailer worked perfectly. It was news to tie Smash fans over while not being too big to overshadow anything. The big hype was obviously the new AC game. Never played AC but I'm excited to try it out.
