Hope this goes well. I'm a Nintendo switch owner , and just like with wii u, I'm happy just playing super Mario, zelda and perhaps Luigis Mansion next year. In between I don't use it at all.

Needless to say it stands docked most of the time.

I have a somewhat nostalgic/colletor mentality when it comes to Nintendo and I want to take care of it the best way possible.

To the point:

Whats best for the battery? To have it docked months in a row or drain the battery and recharge it when (example) Luigis Mansion 3 arrives?

If you battery nerds is reading this, the issue of battery care on 3ds, vita and older system like Nintendo Ds also worries me.

I'm no battery expert, but I believe leaving one drained for long periods of time is not good.

Switch battery will last forever. No need to worry. Nintendo did a great job in this regard.

I believe it's better to leave it docked too. But in case you don't have the dock within reach, make sure it's charged and turn it off completly, not just in sleep mode.

Usually they recommend storing it at 70%~ charge. Same reason why when you get a new device it's neither near 90%+ nor almost dead.

Also being dead is the worst thing you can do to a lithium battery. Never let them go dead. They got a chance (usually have protection though, so it's a really really low chance), of never being able to be charged again.

i leave mine on 24/7. it drains very little in standby (flight mode on) so it's fine to just sit unused for a good few days. don't be charging and draining it completely all the time because it puts a lot of strain on the battery. if i see that it goes below 20-30% then i boost charge it up to ~60-70%.

it's designed to be left in standby 24/7 and docked 100% of the time if that's how you want to play. you can charge it to 100% and just leave it docked if you want.

if your battery does crap out nintendo will replace it (the battery not the console). so don't worry :)

I understand that it's probably best to have it docked.
You should really not.
Li-ion battery is best stored at 40% (most new devices with Li-ion batteries are stored and sold at this level of charge).
Discharge and turn off your Switch (long press) at this capacity if you don't use it at all for a very long time.
See Table 2
Li-ion has higher losses if stored fully charged rather than at a SoC of 40 percent.

This is what I would do, also for other devices.

Storing devices with batteries kind of sucks but what're you gonna do.
