Just got back. Lots to process and probably need to see it a few more times but honestly...... I had an absolute blast with it.

Hearing about all the issues from the production / reshoots and some of the reviews, I went in with an open mind but expecting the worst but the worst never happened.

I'm actually pretty confused, did I see the same movie as the critics ? Because I've seen far, far worse movies than this. Even the so called messy 3rd act flows far better than I expected it to. There is some choppy editing but nowhere near as bas as I thought it would be.

The cast are fucking great, they bounce off each other so well and are very funny, especially Thomas Jane, Keegan Michael Key and Sterling K Brown.

The Predators were both awesome too. Some interesting new lore and they both kicked ass, the big bastard was way better than I thought it would be too and very brutal.

The pacing is full speed ahead and works in the movies favour most of the time, it could have done with some scenes slowing down to extend on a few things but it doesn't dwell on things, so anything that doesn't work is soon over and it's on to the next scene.

It's not perfect of course, far from it and there are definitely a few things that don't work brilliantly, like a few scenes with the kid, although he isn't totally terrible either, just a few scenes didn't work for me. The very end sequence is so crazy and some will hate it but I didn't actually mind it too much.

It's over the top and silly but nowhere near as bad as some people are saying. Perfect popcorn movie, if you want to switch your brain off for a few hours and have a few beers and a laugh.

Overall I really liked it and I'm looking forward to seeing it again. I'd give it a 7/10.

I'll be checking this out in about two hours.

I'm hoping that because my expectations are low I'll enjoy myself and be pleasantly surprised.

This is the sentiment I'm arguing against: "you're more likely to waste a lot of money seeing bad films". That's the only reason it's part of the discussion.

I've skimmed through the conversation and as far as I can tell you're still not really refuting or arguing against his comment. You basically just came in and acted pretentious. Congrats, you value time and money less than your ability to consume art in "the best way". Other people don't, so there's really no need to come in and judge people for how consuming art or purchasing products however they want.

"All the best art is consumed this way." Fuck, what a pretentious retort especially in a thread about Predator of all things.

Saw this last night.

Overall, on a scene by scene basis I was somewhat entertained, but it doesn't hold up as a very good movie.

The good: cast and chemistry is pretty good with some good (awkward) dialog interactions, action in and of itself is pretty solid an it doesn't hold back, some funny moments.

The bad: super Predator CGI/animation is not good, plot/character motivations and resultant actions of almost everyone don't make a lot of sense a lot of the time, jumps around a lot early on between scenes when could have done with some lingering

If you can deal with "dumb fun" movies, then you'll probably enjoy it.

That was the worst thing I've seen all year. I was hoping the bad buzz was hyperbolic but alas.

Shane Black needs to stick to buddy cop comedies because HOLY SHIT is he bad whenever he tries something else.

The gist of it was that there's nothing wrong with setting aside critical reception in favor of just seeing something you wanna see. And that chastising someone for willing to waste money just for having the gall of rolling with their own interests is dumb.

Sorry my conversation bugged you so much, though.

So I thought the movie was pretty ok, but the third act was a complete mess.

Like, I was wondering "oh wow, all of the supporting cast is still around. Maybe they'll all survive, because they have a fun dynamic". Nope, everyone but main dude, the girl and the kid all die in 10 minutes, with 1/2 of them literally just killing themselves. And what the hell happened to the guy from Project Stargazer? He just disappears during the final battle. And the traitor predator's plan makes no sense whatsoever. "I am going to deliver humanity this cool armor to help them out... but I am also going to murder a bunch of human too."

Movie was real bad. I still had fun watching it but I'm telling everyone I know to wait to watch it at home. This is just a B Movie. It's over the top and dumb and probably best enjoyed in a room full of friends.

Also what's with all the mental disability jokes? All of these fell extremely flat in my theater and just rubbed me the wrong way. I mean there was the "lol tourettes guy says dumb stuff", the "don't say the R word, you R word", AND the "Your disability is actually a super power!". I mean I get a lot of this may have (and probably was) tongue in cheek but it just was delivered weird and the movie would have been better without it in general.

The movie is dumb as fuck, and the lead is just this bland void where a character should be. The rest of the "loonies" were fun to watch, though you're sitting there thinking "how will these dudes get killed?" I'd have felt ripped off if I hadn't used my A-list for this.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. It could have been better Ofcourse but there were some laughs and I enjoyed what was there despite plenty of it being nonsensical.

Just got back from theatre and it was pretty much what I expected, a decent action movie with Shane Black dialogue .

I'll agree with the consensus that the third act is messy, and some of the CGI is pretty awful. Nowhere near the level of the first film, but I'd put it around Predators tier, it's a fun watch.

Just got home from theater. Saw it in Dolby at AMC. I enjoyed it more than the previous movies. It was fun. I didn't expect a masterpiece but I thought it was good.

Everyone in the theater was laughing and cheering.

These critics are super harsh on it.

I mean, there isn't exactly a long list of movies that fit this description. It's The Predator and that's basically it.
I tried to avoid mentioning Iron Man 3 because that conversation is one that's been had more than enough at this point.... but Iron Man 3.

Keep going back and forth on whether or not I should see this tomorrow.

But honestly the worst thing about the critical reception is that those fantastic posters were (potentially) wasted on this film

Whoops there IS a Predator thread!

Predator was really middling. When it was being a Shane Black movie, it was a blast, but I definitely think it needed to be a half hour shorter and the kid plot felt so, so shoehorned that I wonder if there was even an editor on the film.

I think WoM is not going to be good and it's going to chop its legs. It's painfully average *and* long, which is as much a death knell as a shorter bad movie.

Would rather rewatch Happytime Murders, which I actually enjoyed.

Sterling K. Brown again proves he needs to be in everything ever. Dude is human charisma.

A friend of mine and I just got back from the theater.

I think greatly lowered expectations help. The movie isn't miserable, incoherent schlock, it's fun and humorous incoherent schlock.

The cast was clearly having a blast and the interplay between the unhinged vets was what kept the movie from tanking completely. One of the best scenes in the film is when Olivia Munn gets a very awkward introduction to the grunts. There are portions of this movie that feel like it could be from a much better Shane Black film.

There is, however, some absolutely ATROCIOUS editing and MAJOR gaps in logic and pacing and anyone who says otherwise is delusional. The final third is a complete shit show, as has been reported. The movie really jumps into the trash heap with incoherent editing, things just happening without there being any proper establishing shots or spacial awareness, disorienting movements, and shit just HAPPENING. People pop into frames and you're like "Wait, what, where? Where the fuck did they come from?"

A major "antagonist" disappears from the movie completely. At some point, during the purely random chaos, long after what should have been a resolution to that character I remember stopping in the middle of everything to think to myself "Wait, what the fuck happened to that guy? Did I see him die? Is it just me?"

No, it wasn't just me, my friend confirmed...they set him up for a big pay off and then...he's just gone. It may have been IMPLIED that he died? But it sure as fuck didn't make any impact whatsoever because I don't remember shit.

Also, using a child with Asperger's as a plot device is one thing, but when you fuck up the logic so bad that at the end the main character can do EXACTLY WHAT THEY SAID ONLY THE KID WITH ASPERGER'S CAN DO...you know you're just trying to force the puzzle pieces together with your first at that point.

This must have been a complete nightmare for the people in the editing room. At some point you can absolutely see/feel the whole "Well, that'll have to do" vibe that must have hit that room.

Still, even though the movie was really dumb and I wasn't bored and I laughed a lot and it wasn't a "good film", I still had a decent time watching it.

That last act though...man. Holy shit. I felt nauseated from that editing.

Do you mean Traeger? He got his head blown off by the Predator shoulder cannon he was wearing.

Pretty telling how bad the editing and framing of certain sequences were when I don't even remember seeing that happen. That whole sequence should have been the highlight of the movie (and also where everything SHOULD have ended), and instead it was a complete shit show with some awful CG moments.

There is one good joke and it's not one that the human cast participates in.
Predator uses a disembodied arm to make a thumbs up
. I'm not sure why any director would want to saddle Keegan with absolutely cringe-inducing jokes that are just a waste of his and your time. Also completely wasting Thomas Jane to just be reduced to being a joke character where the joke is an offensive depiction of Tourette's syndrome where swearing inappropriately is the whole outdated bit. At least they made Olivia Munn look cool. Trevante Rhodes know he's in trash so he is just having the most fun time. I didn't care for anyone's deaths, which is the opposite to the first Predator film.

The action sequences being mostly shot in the dark makes it very easy for it to become forgettable. I'm not sure why modern action films insist on this as anything apart from cost cutting.

Having not read any reviews and having an unlimited cinema card. I went and saw this movie. It is pretty much the most chaotic and nonsensical movie I've seen this year. Halfway through I turned to my friend and said "This film simultaneously has so much and nothing going on."

After most of the cast get evicerated/ wipe themselves out in moments of stupidity I haven't seen since Prometheus. The Predator decides that killing the remaining main stars is kinda eh and decides to throw rhem around a bit. Rather than wearing their bowels for hats. Even though at this point he has supposedly taken damage that would be a warning to take this fight seriously.

Also scenes zip in and out, with seemingly no connection or relevance to anything. With so much unexplained. It's a shame, because under the bad editing, cringy jokes and dialogue. There's actually a pretty fun and dumb action film. You just have to wade through a lot of nonsense to catch glimpses of it.

Usual case of main character plot armour. Dutch, Mike and Royce all had it too in their movies, not something that's just a fault with this one. All Predators seem to have a big ego when it comes to the final fight, instead of getting the job done.

Solid 3/10. Far from the worst I've seen this year but definitely not good at all

Yeah I asked this earlier on too, I have no idea why it even happened. I blinked and he died.
I thought that it was immediately obvious it would happen as soon as he had tried that thing on, was only a matter of when.

There were "checkovs gun" scenes prior with him being very interested in that specific item prior to that.

Oh yea definitely, I guess after thinking about a little more. I think it probably bothered me a lot more with this movie as the overall structure was a lot messier. So I am probably a lot less forgiving in this instance because other aspects of the movie had my back up!

Just got out of this. This is ASTONISHINGLY terrible.

I need to collect my thoughts but I'll leave you with this:

The Predators are coming to earth because climate change is making humans extinct, and they need to become the ultimate hunters....by injecting themselves with aspbergers.

I am so torn as to whether I should click this or not...
