A friend of mine and I just got back from the theater.
I think greatly lowered expectations help. The movie isn't miserable, incoherent schlock, it's fun and humorous incoherent schlock.
The cast was clearly having a blast and the interplay between the unhinged vets was what kept the movie from tanking completely. One of the best scenes in the film is when Olivia Munn gets a very awkward introduction to the grunts. There are portions of this movie that feel like it could be from a much better Shane Black film.
There is, however, some absolutely ATROCIOUS editing and MAJOR gaps in logic and pacing and anyone who says otherwise is delusional. The final third is a complete shit show, as has been reported. The movie really jumps into the trash heap with incoherent editing, things just happening without there being any proper establishing shots or spacial awareness, disorienting movements, and shit just HAPPENING. People pop into frames and you're like "Wait, what, where? Where the fuck did they come from?"
A major "antagonist" disappears from the movie completely. At some point, during the purely random chaos, long after what should have been a resolution to that character I remember stopping in the middle of everything to think to myself "Wait, what the fuck happened to that guy? Did I see him die? Is it just me?"
No, it wasn't just me, my friend confirmed...they set him up for a big pay off and then...he's just gone. It may have been IMPLIED that he died? But it sure as fuck didn't make any impact whatsoever because I don't remember shit.
Also, using a child with Asperger's as a plot device is one thing, but when you fuck up the logic so bad that at the end the main character can do EXACTLY WHAT THEY SAID ONLY THE KID WITH ASPERGER'S CAN DO...you know you're just trying to force the puzzle pieces together with your first at that point.
This must have been a complete nightmare for the people in the editing room. At some point you can absolutely see/feel the whole "Well, that'll have to do" vibe that must have hit that room.
Still, even though the movie was really dumb and I wasn't bored and I laughed a lot and it wasn't a "good film", I still had a decent time watching it.
That last act though...man. Holy shit. I felt nauseated from that editing.
