Visiting there soon and was wondering if any locals had any recommendations on things to do/see there, or any general tips about the area?

I'm into my pop culture and history so things associated with them would be great, the best bars or restaurants and that sort of thing, might try to catch a Giants game shame the Basketball season is off. Already planning the obvious major things like the Bridge and Alcatraz.

Not really into traditional or contemporary art, unless any of the galleries are really recommended.

Yo, you might want to join us over at the SF hangouts thread. We might be doing a meet-up soon, so maybe you can chime in.
https://www.resetera.com/threads/sf-bayera-ot.1556/page-8

Feel free to post there for advice on your visit as well.

SF MOMA is a great place to hit if you want to see some modern art.

I would hop on the ferry across the Bay to get a nice view of San Francisco from another perspective.

If you're renting a car, I suggest you head over to Marin headlands for some of the most beautiful Californian scenery you will likely see.

Also, going across the Golden Gate bridge is a must. Head across during sunrise to get some amazing views, you'll probably fall in love with the place afterwards.

Leave the city and go to a better one.

Or I guess go to the tourist-y things like the wharf, see the Painted Ladies and cruise Market St.

If you're into science/nature, the California Academy of Sciences is fun. The biodome thing they have is probably one of the most interesting things I've ever done in my life. Exploratorium is cool too.

For something more generic and touristy (If you don't get sea sick) do the rocket boat on Fisherman's Wharf.

There's so many places to eat but as far as junk food options go, I like El Castillo, Irving Subs and Bi-Rite creamery if you're looking for something sweet.

Get a burrito from the Mission District. La Taqueria is the usual recommendation, but I think there are some other ones that are comparable.

How does NYC compare to SF, in your opinion? Slightly better, much better, worse?

La Taqueria is indeed amazing. Be prepared to wait for a while though

I would skip La Taqueria and go to El Farlito's, which is right next to it.

Also in Mission District there's a place called Noisebridge. It's a hackerspace with cool things to do. Some people will let you try their projects, even VR stuff.

The bar on top of the Hilton Union Square has pretty nice views if you want to see stuff from 40+ stories up.

The drinks were overpriced but whatever.

If you really like garlic, I recommend "The Stinking Rose". It's amazing; every dish has garlic in it, even the ice cream (which is delicious!).

Coit Tower offers pretty dope views
Sutro Bath House and that outer District parks are really nice
The buffalo and windmill in GGP
Taco Bell in Pacifica
The fort by the GGB
House of Prime Rib
Kevin's Noodle House
Plenty of dope coffee spots

Get a burrito from the Mission District. La Taqueria is the usual recommendation, but I think there are some other ones that are comparable.

Places
I was there a year ago and soon again. For touristy stuff like seeing the golden gate bridge, keep in mind it is fog season. May not be visible until afternoon.

One of the few places in the US with great Chinese food.

Also SF is nothing like NYC or the rest of the US for that matter.

About 60% of this thread is going to be homeless shit jokes....

Pop culture is pretty broad.
If you want clubs, mission clubs like those around the makeout room or public works are a lot of fun. For game versions, go to Foundry or Coin Op.
I do a lot of union square bars.
Nice walk from De Young to the beach through GG park is always nice.

For media pop culture, you've got the Ant Man house, Ms Doubtfire house, Full house... house (painted ladies). If you do Painted ladies it's in alamo square and you have a lot of good food if you go north up fillmore.

What else are ya into. Got twelve years of wandering around here that I can dish out.

Ha! Such an unassuming place. Best friend lives a block from this place. Walk his dog by it when the wife and I dogsit.

If you really like garlic, I recommend "The Stinking Rose". It's amazing; every dish has garlic in it, even the ice cream (which is delicious!).

Also second this. Whenever I have friends of family that visit and I'm not sure what they'll like, I always take them here as I've yet to meet someone that didn't love this place. Always get the bagna calda starter with whatever else you get. The garlic is so soft is spreads like butter.

The View at Marriot is better for this only because it looks like an Empire Strikes Back set.

As for bars as a whole, there are a lot of nice secret ones if you dive into unassuming places.

To be less obscure, got friends at Bartlett Hall near union square. Place has a tasty menu (love the buffalo cauliflower) and their house beers are nice, though it can be a bit pricey. Across the street is Foley's which has fun drunken dueling pianos below (usually a lot of middleaged people but the crowd randomly gets younger an more attractive sometimes) which is a reasonably priced "irish" bar. Down a block is New Delhi which is a nice 2 am running dive bar than runs cheap. Block from there is Pandora which is cheap drinks with a great karaoke stage and private karaoke rooms if you wanna pay extra. Not far from all of that is Ryoko's which is popular sushi and ok bar. If you wanna get fancy their is Bourbon and Branch, the reconstructed speakeasy that really fits the theme but costs... too much. Plus other secret places around.

That's just union square. If you're gonna be in other districts, I got other feedback as well.

It's La Taqueria if you like burritos without rice; El Farolito if you're a human being.

La Cornetta for cochinita pibil. (Honestly I prefer it for everything) Though some people will discount my opinion because I think Taqueria Cancun is overrated.

If I could recommend one bar, I'd pick Smuggler's Cove. There are a lot of great tiki bars in the area, but this one takes the cake for me.

VOLCANO CURRY!

Best Japanese curry in the city, maybe the world who knows.

In regards to the Mission; the more dangerous the neighborhood, the better the food.

NYC is better in most aspects (to me, every aspect but I don't want to be too hyperbolic).

The food across the bridge in Oakland is alot better than SF IMO (I've lived in SF the past 4 years). Alot of the more interesting restaurants get priced out of SF for how ridiculous it is for a restaurant to survive here - 2 of my favorite gourmet burger joints have already gone under.

Some good picks would be:

San Tung
Panko and Hot Sauce
Auntie April's Chicken-n-Waffles
Berretta
Liho Liho
House of Prime Rib
Cheung Hing
Golden Gate Bakery
Good Luck Dim Sum
Hong Kong Lounge
NOPA
Italian Homemade Company
Griddle Fresh
Farmhouse Kitchen Thai

Thanks for the recommendations! Will have a car and will be spending time up at Tahoe while I'm west coast so will see some scenery there.

I'm also kind of morbidly obsessed with the GGB after seeing the documentary 'The Bridge' so I'll find it amazing but also kind of harrowing.

Go do crack on the streets

But I just kicked the damned habit?!

Really great write up there, for a more specific question what's the best Jazz bar? Also how late does the BART run and how often on a night?

You're in for a ride then. The GG bridge is really nice to observe.

I've never been to a jazz bar here, but I'm about to go to one tonight to relax and hear some good music, so I'll get back to you on that.

BART stops running at 1am. If you're thinking of using BART for bar hopping late at night you're going to have to use Uber, Lyft or whatever.

The trains run pretty frequently, at least on 7 minute increments at particular times of day. At night it gets to be more limited.

Depending on the night, the Boom Boom room in Fillmore. Though I've been meaning to try sheba near there. The Saloon is popular in north beach (little italy). So is Club deluxe if near haight ashbury . Bart closes at midnight, but is only useful for getting out of town or to mission. Muni runs all night but gets down to limited routes in the wee hours.
