You're my hero.

That thread was such an eyeroller and I also chimed in with XCX.

No other game's world has ever taken my breath away - multiple times - like XCX. There feeling overcomes any flaw or criticism levied at it, and the more I think about it, the more it fights for the spot of favorite JRPG of all time.

can't wait to watch the video!

Xenoblade Chronicles X was secretly a stealth/platformer.
Many hours in this game were spent sneaking around in Ganglion bases full of enemies 20+ levels above me to loot treasure spots and plant probes. I remember one base in particular that was too guarded to get into without a fight because there was only one entrance. I ended up climbing up a mountain next to it and jumping down to reach the back of the base where a probe spot was.

On this world there is no level segregation like in other games. You can find level 6 enemies in the same area as level 90 enemies. It sort of mimicks a food chain where you have to watch out for enemies that you can take on and find your way around enemies that are above you.

It felt good making your way through an area full of higher level enemies while also evading detection.

As for the skells I liked the concept of having enemies that would ignore you on foot but would find your skell threatening due to its increased size.

This meant that you still had to keep an eye out for enemies that would become aggressive towards skells since some of them could destroy yours pretty quickly.
I think the game absolutely nailed the feeling of being in a hostile alien wilderness. Part of what made Mira so fun to explore is that it felt dangerous all the time. From the giant creatures that roamed in areas near relatively weak enemies to all the predators that disguised themselves as plant life and rocks to ambush you. I really remember Noctilum specifically feeling like this dense jungle where anything could jump out and eat me.

And I think that's the cool part. Usually in a RPG, the enemies are always at a level that you're supposed to be able to handle them and if they are too strong they you either aren't supposed to be there or you haven't leveled up enough to where the game expects you to be and you need to grind. And that's because the enemies are there for you to fight, kill and gain experience and items. And while the enemies serve that purpose in X, they also serve the purpose of being natural obstacles that you need to circumvent. So the first time you reach an area with strong enemies, it's like a navigation/stealth challenge where you are looking at your surroundings and using the open world design to find an angle of approach to get past the enemies. Then later on when you've become stronger, they're a nice battle to challenge you.

It feels weird, but exploring the world in XCX gave me serious Metroid vibes. It recreated that feeling of discovering an alien world with a rich history, particularly in Oblivia with all its massive ruins indicating a long-lost alien civilization.

It was so pretty. Xeno games really balance out the exotic fantasy planet with sci-fi, and it was a treat to explore every nook and cranny and discovering still a new locations 200 hours in.

It needs a proper chance on the Switch. And please throw in more content.... and an "collectables only" option after winning fights. >___>

My phone wallpaper has been a shot I took from the game: :P

I hate a lot of the stupid sexualized elements though. Every bad girl is LITERALLY designed like a "bad gurl". Goddammit Xenoblade, you'd be my dream-come-true game if you didn't do this so damn often

Not weird at all, in terms of gameplay mechanics they couldn't be more different, but in terms of atmosphere they are going for the same hostile, alien world vibe. I actually think Xenoblade X nails that feeling more than Metroid, simply due to being more immersive.

Still my favorites open world. I can still remember place I visited even after all this time. Replayed it some day ago, and XB2 world really pal in comparison, You can clearly see the difference in polish between the 2

I just finished watching the video, and goddamn, nostalgia overload.

When the montage at the end of the Oblivia kick in I just couldn't stop myself from grinning like an asshole. I remembered my first time walking in to that zone, seeing how massive it looked, with that music just blasting me in the face and it was one of those video game moments I'll never forget. So good.

How anyone can say XCX's soundtrack is bad I'll never understand. Seriously.

The soundtrack is uneven, that's why. Overall I love it but I have to admit that some of the tracks are bad, and not bad in that they are boring, but bad in a way that becomes incredibly grating while you play. The daytime New LA theme comes to mind.

Also music is incredibly subjective.

Looking at the gif, I realize I forgot that Cauldros is sometimes clear skies and sunny. The weather effects in this game were crazy too. Crimson auroras, rising energy mist, electromagnetic storms, etc.

And I guess you're talking about Goetia and Ryyz? Yeah, wasn't a fan of them. I did like Murderess though even if she's technically not a villain, she's definitely 'bad'. The game has a number of sexualized outfits too but what I liked was that there was a fashion gear option so that you could wear whatever you wanted and not get stuck with something you didn't like because of stats.

Almost every exploration theme in the game has this big kick where the song takes a breath and hits you with the main sting of the track and I swear it just enhances the exploration by like 100%. I feel like no matter what I'm doing, when the music hits that part, it always matches up to whatever I'm doing. The video actually does a really good job of highlighting that aspect of the OST in how it's edited.

I was standing in Obvlia looking down at my gamepad and one of these things walked up into my camera balls first. I look up at the screen and they're literally just dangling in my screen. Monolith Soft, why?

Some tracks are REALLY bad imo, not saying it's all good, but when discussion about this OST comes up there's always people claiming the entire thing is "hot garbage", etc, and that's nonsense (imo obviously).

A masterclass in world design and exploration, Monolithsoft focused 100% on this aspect with this game and they showed that they can do better than any western developer designing sci-fi worlds. I like the two other XC games a lot more, but there's no denying that Monolith is a talented studio that does what other JRPG developers don't even try.

What was everyone's favorite area overall? I think I like Noctilum the best because I'm a sucker for huge waterfalls and it also looks incredible at night. I haven't explored much of Sylvalum, but I thought that it was immediately striking, visually. It also had beautiful music and it just looked like a truly alien environment. Felt like something out of Super Metroid.

Best thing about daytime Cauldros is seeing the gold shine at the Capital.

I really wish the game did more 'dungeon-y areas', I thought exploring the inside of that was too short lived but still really cool.

I think Cauldros is the area that gives me the most of that hardcore sci-fi vibe (Xenoblade 1's Mechonis was divine for this palette and style as well)

I'm just gonna keep gushing, because this game is in my Top 3.

lol

I honestly keep going between them. That vid pointed out how they all seem to have a different design philosophy that helps make each area look and feel different to explore.
Primordia - Fun to run around, safe-ish, tons to see in the sky and coast when you're done with the "tutorial" area, it houses New LA which is cool too :P
Noctilum - Gorgeous, varied, gorgeous, that music, I feel like I'm on an vacation-adventure every time here. I love that it gets weird sometimes too.... Like nature divided by 0.
Oblivia - I love the mystery, the [alien] ruins, the wide fields, the heights. I feel like this area has a "history"
Silvalum - I love that this place "wakes up" at night. I love how alien it feels, Silv feels most removed from a world we'd recognize, and makes it pretty and dangerous
Cauldros - I love how intense and scary it is. It's the sci-fi world gone wrong. It's "powerful" looking.

One of my favourite games of all time, featuring one of the two best crafted open worlds today, the next one being BOTW and not suprisingly created by the same team.

I'm really Angry that this game isn't announced for the Switch already. aside from BotW, this is the biggest game Nintendo had ever produced.

I need more Elma and Lyn in my life :P

I knew I liked you for a reason.

I'm kidding, I like you for lots of reasons.
Shenmue did it decades ago.

(Taking in consideration all the restrictions of the era, of course).
It starts really, really small and it gets progressively bigger as the game (and its sequel) go on.
I can't agree. The dynamic shift in Xenoblade X is far beyond the experience in Shenmue and to say they are comparable is to sell short the experience of Xenoblade as well as place unrealistic expectations on Shenmue.

Noctilum was also my favorite. I tend to love dense jungle regions in games because of all the different plant life and the winding pathways. Makna Forest from the first game was a favorite of mine too. Noctilum was like Makna but on crack or whatever drug makes everything look like it's glowing. The bioluminescent trees really make it a beautiful place to explore.

I think what I like most about Noctilum though is how varied it is and how it takes you through several different experiences as you explore. When you first enter Noctilum, you're in a very dense jungle region. There are trees and rock walls all around you and it feels very dangerous. Giant insects and apes in the trees above waiting to ambush you and crocodiles and monsters posing as flowers in the swamps. It feels claustrophobic because you're so closed in and you can barely see beyond the trees.

KxIm3i3.jpg

Then you emerge from the jungle and reach an open cove area. Suddenly you feel like you're much more out in the open but you're still limited to moving along the cliff sides and in the water and it's still dangerous because there are not giant tortoises pretending to be boulders and also totally harmless alien wreckage that is just begging to be inspected closely.

j9utnsP.jpg

Once you get through the cove area, Noctilum really opens up as you see this vast expanse of giant waterfalls, mountains and trees beyond you. You can spend a lot of time in that first jungle area, enough to feel like a continent in of itself. But then you get to here and realize there is so much more to explore. I spent so many hours here forgetting that there was even a main storyline. I came here to do a quest and then start the next story mission and probably didn't get back to it for the next 10-15 hours.

Story's disjointed and feels incomplete. I would describe it as jank with some interesting concepts and revelations.
Characterization is a mixed bag. Lots of cliches but there is some depth.

It's all very ambitious. I would double-dip for a Switch version in a heartbeat.

Simply one of the best games ever made. And likely the reason BotW is such a great open-world.

A technical marvel which thankfully a lot of developers won't ever play. Anyone working on say a random Assasins' Creed clone with poor performance and glitches at every corner would undoubtedly be heavily disheartened by seeing how some people on this planet had the chance to work on such a masterpiece.

Yeah, the whole progression of the area as it leads you through all of the different environments was really cool. Realizing how much I had to explore when I made it to the open area was a really awesome feeling. And Makna was one of my favorite areas in the original Xenoblade too. That giant waterfall was awe-inspiring back then, and I loved swimming all the way to it to see what was behind it.
ah, the guardian deity. How many unsuspecting people did that guy kill ?

I want a sequel so bad, it would have been my favorite game of all time with a proper ending. I Love Mira so much, I got really attached with a lot of characters and NLA. And I loved every song Sawano made for the game.

Probably my favorite open world to explore ever! The crazy alien world and the scale of everything is just amazing in XCX and I would just walk around and screenshot everything lolol. Sylvalum at night alongside the OST was just amazing!!

I want a port and then a Sequel. I want the sequel to go full on PSO though and allow actual co-op exploration instead of only small contained co-op missions. I loved those and want them expanded on

I really just coildn't get into this game. I really liked the first game and was really looking forward to this too. But the whole structure of this game just completely baffled me. I played it until I got my robot and like a little bit further than that and then just kinda stopped.
Sure, the enviroments looked great, but the way they were presented was just completely stupid. In the first game you had all of those great big beautiful areas and you progressed through them in a more or less linear fashion. Getting to a new area was always just a really special moment. I knew something was wrong with X when they showed us all of the areas of the game before release. The game just throws you into at least three areas within the first 20 hours of the game without giving you any time to actually take it all in.
I don't know if I remember this correctly, but there was just some fetch quest on the mission board that was very low-level and it just took me to the northern continent without any sort of fanfare or anything. It just completely lacked any feeling of discovery and wonder.
It just all felt like such a waste to me. They clearly put a lot of work and love into the game, only to bury it under a billion systems and a horribly written story.

It's hard to overstate how enjoyable I found this game. It took over my life for a couple months at the end of 2016. I've never seen a game before or since that had such a sense of scale, and allowed the player a meaningful sense of progression through that scale. And yet, even once you're flying through the skies in a team of huge mechs, the scale is still insanely huge.

The excellent Sawano soundtrack helps reinforce every emotional moment and also drive you nuts while you wander the streets of New LA (Uh, Yeah, Uh, Uh, Uh, Uh! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-oooooooooooooooooooooo! WOoooooooo-oooooooo!)

This is my #1 most wanted Wii U to Switch port. I'd play it all again in a heartbeat.
