I was playing DKC Tropical Freeze last night and spent in-game currency on a capsule machine with blind-wrapped prizes.

Is this any different?

Did not really enjoy it much at all. It's choppy as fuck, the main menu is a mess (oh, for Trials HD's basic list of stages) and all the "cool" shit like dabbing just makes me feel like this game is really for 12-year-olds, or rather what middle-aged men think a 12-year-old would like, obviously. It's kinda painful, like, I'm embarrassed for them.

Core gameplay seems like it'll be great still, obviously, but I've got Trials HD, or Evo, or sometimes Fusion for that.

Yeah this is really making me miss the personality of Fusion. This just feels kinda cynical. I did briefly enjoy stomping a few people online though. I haven't lost a step lmao.

Every installment of this series seems to get worse. The first one was pure clean fun.

Or maybe they'll be only be purchasable with in-game currency, but set up a store to buy in-game currency with real money.
Yeah, you are right, that could definitively be the case. I just reacted the way I did because I thought the OP and title were ambiguous, giving maybe the impression that we were talking about paid lootboxes in the Closed Beta available right now. As for the final product, who knows, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised if you could buy Trials Coins with real money. I also wouldn't buy the game if that was the case, anyway.

It's all part of the plan so that next E3 they can proudly announce getting rid of lootboxes as a selling point.

Oh wait, this is Ubi. Nevermind.

This "only in-game currency" stuff sucks in OnRush, and it'll suck in this, too. Especially if half of the unlocks are "graffiti" tags that are barely used in the gameplay itself. It's just a crushingly boring carrot-dangle in a racing game. (Not sure why I get bored by it more in racing games than in other genres, though I'm meh on the practice across the board.)

I downloaded this last night though it wouldn't let me play it yet.

Has anyone hit up the beta forum to see if people are talking about the loot boxes?

I just don't understand what's fun about RNG mechanics like lootboxes. I know it is not paid but lootboxes in particular has never been fun or good.
I think lootboxes can be fun when you reach a new level and they show up as a "here's some random rare loot for you" type of reward. Unfortunately companies have decided to go way past that point.
